justjimmy··on Can you pick out a brand just by their button design?
Gmail, Twitter, Facebook, Yahoo, Instagram, Flickr, Amazon

Are the ones I got.

Actually thought Square's was bootstrap.

The the average user, buttons styles may not mean much if at all, but for those that with a keen eye and pays close attention to minute details and pixels, it's quite telling which button belong to which brand.

Saw #4 and was wondering 'What the fracking frack? Is my Little Pony Friends part of this test?' Then I learned it's Microsoft…

The 'easiest buttons to identify for me was Facebook's and Google's.

justjimmy··on A Short Rant About Working Remotely
When I get contacted for freelance/contract work, directly from the company/startup, they're always open for remote work when I inquire about it (and we communicate through mainly Basecamp)

I've had 0 remote work opportunities via recruiters.

justjimmy··on How Angry are your Developers?
Interesting…so are those swear words meant to be place holders?

I sometimes use images of friends/TV characters, or even lolcats for giggles. I guess some developers chose to channel creativity this way…

Wonder what place holders 'angry' designers would use?

justjimmy··on From Basecamp to Blimp in three clicks
Thanks.

The ratio going from Small > Medium seems strange. Twice the space, but more than twice the cost. Yet, Medium > Large follows the more conventional pricing method, where you pay twice the amount but get more than twice the benefits.

Intended?

justjimmy··on From Basecamp to Blimp in three clicks
For some reason, I read the url as getLIMP…uh…interesting name.

Look forward to the pricing plans - it'll affect if I will try it or even switch over from Basecamp.

justjimmy··on A List Apart 5.0
When I design website related work in Photoshop, I have a section of layers that contains shapes with dimensions of the common resolutions ie: MBA 1366 x 768, 1024 x 768, etc.

I'm a bit surprised that the huge image isn't responsive so that it changes in size - to always show or hint that there's something below the fold (ie: https://yourkarma.com/ )

This new design have nothing to indicate there are stuff below the fold when viewed on a MBA 1366x768 or any with 768 height - it looks like a giant magazine cover. Unless that was the intended effect.

(But then I'm using Chrome, so might look different in other browsers)

justjimmy··on Meet Watsi, Y Combinator's First Nonprofit
Previous discussions about Watsi. Good to see they're getting more exposure.

justjimmy··on Etsy acquires Mixel
Hey…it's Khoi Vinh! I remember hearing him speak at Design Thinkers in Toronto when I was still in school.

He was speaking as one of the panels about what students should expect after graduation, in terms of work places. Every other person on the panel was going on about similar points - one of them was prepare to work very hard (give your life . Almost everyone on the panel was from an agency) - Khoi immediately spoke up and said he disagreed, saying that a balance/social life is still needed and important. And that he would never expect or ask his interns and new grads hires to work themselves to extreme (which seems to be the norm/expected in the GD field). Some discussions ensued. It was very refreshing.

justjimmy··on If, Why, and How Founders Should Hire a “Professional” CEO
By shutting out existing members and giving non members more features?
justjimmy··on If, Why, and How Founders Should Hire a “Professional” CEO
Question to anyone from LinkedIn:

Why is it that when I view a profile that I'm not connected with, I can gleam more information when not logged in vs logged in?

When I'm logged in, I can see 1 info box. When not logged in, I can view their entire profile (if they have hidden option off) I basically used LinkedIn in Incognito mode now when gleaming new profiles.

What's up with that?

justjimmy··on What do technical managers do, anyway?
"You can either be a shit funnel, or a shit umbrella."

Thank you painting such a vivid imagery in my mind with that metaphor… :O

justjimmy··on Show HN: The top free PSDs on dribbble in one place
Usually the author (that posted it on Dribbble) will have a description of how he likes the PSD to be used - ie: Not for redistribution or doesn't want to see it used and reposted on Dribbble etc.

Safest bet - contact the author directly and clarify. You can find their contact info through Dribbble.

Personally when I find resources I'd like to use (mainly non print, commercially), I contact the authors directly and offer to buy a license. Everyone's pretty open and friendly.

justjimmy··on Implore HN: Celebrate and encourage young developers who post here
There is a reason why there is an age of consent, why there is a youth criminal system, why there are age limits.

Some of you clearly lack empathy.

justjimmy··on Kid Sends Blunt Cover Letter and Now People are Trying to Hire Him
This is a gem, considering what's out there atm.

I've heard interns work their way into the big 4 and then squander it - they expect to be in charge of cases, call the shots, and some even refuse to come in when called - "I'm watching a movie."

IB isn't like fashion industry where interns are usually delegated mundane tasks like fetching coffee, but it's good to see this guy willing to doing w/e it takes.

justjimmy··on 3 Weeks already, $0 income – what are we doing wrong?
"Is It hard to promote mobile apps?"

Hard when you are a few years late, in a genre (Sudoku) where there's not much room for innovation in game play.

justjimmy··on Show HN: Draft – A Design Feedback Tool for Designers and Small Teams
When compared to InvisionApp, which is what I use currently for sharing mocks and annotations capability - they have more features and for the same/similar price.

You won't beat them in features (atm) so you gotta beat them in price.

If you guys are cheaper, I'd give it a whirl!

justjimmy··on If Everyone Knew
Damn, only 10? Must…read…more…
justjimmy··on The Minimum Viable Kitchen
Good list and good read but nowhere close to MVK.

$25 for a cutting board? A $40 digital scale is overkill.

True MVP/MVK should be using stuff that's truly necessary. ie: A knife honer - just use the bottom of a ceramic bowl - worked for chefs for millennium.

justjimmy··on Show HN: Search through Photoshop layers easily
This is great for below CS6. CS6 has search function, that can be searched via Name, Kind, Effect, Mode, Attribute and Color. It's pretty extensive.

Pixel pushers should def upgrade to CS6 - it also has auto snap to pixel grid for Vector Tools which is a godsend.

justjimmy··on [dead]
I'm not talking about addiction - I'm talking about filling up a person's time because they have all this free time and if not filled, they have to deal with reality and/or hard choices. They choose to quickly fill the time up, so they don't have to do (and deal) with anything else besides said activity, eat and sleep.

It doesn't have to be gaming - it can be Reddit, Facebook, Drinking, etc.

(It's also different than, say, a new game is released and we all go on a 3 day gaming binge. Work/Career/Paying Rent/Job >>>> Leisure Activities. Prioritizing.)

justjimmy··on Quitting LinkedIn
This is how I use LinkedIn:

When I'm scoping out a position/company, I see who's on the team that I'll be working with ie: Design. Then I hopefully, there's a link to the blog/portfolio/Dribbble/Twitter. This is to get a sense of their work and style, though it doesn't have to match the style of the company itself, but you can an idea of experience of those people.

Then I look at employee insights - which shows those who left the company recently. Again, I dig through till I find the ex designers. I also pay attention to the duration - ie: if the company are churning out alot of ex employees who stay no longer than 3 months, then I'd pay closer attention.

And I never initiate contact though LinkedIn. Twitter, email is the way to go for me, which you can easily find as you dig through their profile.

In short, I don't use LinkedIn to find jobs. I use it to find out more about the company, somewhat culture and its people.

Also I do it all when I'm not logged in - it gives you more info when you're not logged vs logged in (they'll put up upgrade/pay walls). Really, really dumb.

justjimmy··on [dead]
Read the chinese link and thought I'd share some more bits:

Kid says his dad over reacted, mistaken his gaming ways as an addiction. Claims he only played heavily for a few days and it was a misunderstanding between them. Wants time to find a suitable job - he can either play or don't play, just that he hasn't found a suitable job and plays to kill time.

It seems to me like denial/avoidance - I've personally experienced issues like this - you play heavily not to kill time but to delay the inevitable, delay the decisions you will have to face. You don't want to ask the hard questions and you simply put it off and procrastinate. If you're still in highschool, then it wouldn't mean much but once you graduate and in your mid twenties (and beyond), you have to shape up and not delve into activities that doesn't help build your character (heyoo).

justjimmy··on Judge Says No One Is Confusing Apple's App Store and Amazon's Appstore
Let's not think about patent/trademark issue for a second.

It's ludicrous why Amazon would name its store to something already similar. Whether or not Apple 'owns' the name, App Store, why would a huge company, with a clear brand, names its store that will only lead to customer confusion.

Are they trying to prove a point? Google's Google Play gives it a clear distinction, it even adds it's own name to the name. Why doesn't Amazon do this?

Short of trying to prove a point and sticking it to Apple, I don't see any merit for Amazon (not to mention it came after Apple's App Store) in naming its store Appstore. (or maybe they lack creative marketers to come up with a clever name?)

justjimmy··on Show HN: My weekend project - Codestagram
I see it more akin to Dribbble than Instagram. You could also introduce 'rebound' - which is improving/optimizing/add your personal touch to the 'shot' (uploaded image, or code in this case).

I'm actually going to try and redesign this as my case study for this weekend, thanks for sharing!

justjimmy··on If you see a UI walkthrough, they blew it
Don't worry, it's not a really good 'hint'. I've seen people take the hint as shake the phone to reveal camera, instead of touch + hold + slide up.
justjimmy··on If you see a UI walkthrough, they blew it
Hmm…not really sure how I feel about this article.

It's using existing gestures and having them carry out different functions that is unique to the app.

It's like keyboard shortcuts - every program's usage will be different minus a few key ones. Or video games, some buttons do what you expect but some will depend on what the game's design is. Of course there will be some tour or tutorial - how else are we supposed to learn about them?

Double tapping the Home Button on iPhone < How did we learn about this? Double tap? There's no visual queue on the hardware that we can double tap. Did Apple fail?

I kinda get what the author is trying to say but he also kind of miss the point of walkthroughs and tour completely.

justjimmy··on $26,679 in 24 hours: Stats from my latest book launch
Thanks for the answers. Copyright use of images, especially screenshots, had always been a confusion point for me.

For the case study, basically I'd like to know what it entails before purchasing. All the other content speak of principles and guidelines but I find it more interesting to read about an actual case study, the thoughts and reasoning behind the decisions made. (I can't find what the case study was about too - just that it's a time tracking service. Is it Harvest? Basecamp?)

You said you'll be working with the company further, I look forward to that one!

justjimmy··on $26,679 in 24 hours: Stats from my latest book launch
I have a few questions:

1. Did you have to 'kick back' any money? To those that you interviewed, or companies where you used their screenshots in your examples/critiques? Did you reach out to them and notifying them that they/their company will be in your book for profit?

2. From the sample chapter, you talk a lot about principles and critiques of interface design but are there any area in the book where there are data or user ability studies to explain it further (ie: why they work)? Or is most of it based on experience?

3. Any plans for a sample page on the case study? I think that's where the most value is - the full process of where you take us through your thoughts and reasoning on designing a product.
