> It seems more academic if that makes sense

I remember a naive cultural bias in the US towards regarding the English as possessing an elevated degree of education and refinement. I would have assumed the greater presence of truly idiotic British figures in American news media and comedy in recent decades might have clubbed that misconception to death like a baby seal.

I hope you don't think that is the odd one out.

Oddly enough, the SGI Fuel (also the Tezro, I think) had PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports but also offered USB ports and support for HID devices in IRIX.

I have no idea whether the keyboard and mouse that shipped with those later SGIs were PS/2 or USB devices.

edit: IMO there was nothing wrong with preferring PS/2 to USB 20-some years ago. Higher theoretical refresh rate on the PS/2 mouse at that time and the PS/2 keyboard offered better n-key rollover, although I question whether any of that mattered one way or the other to an SGI owner

A decade’s worth of SGI machines combined MIPS processors with PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports.

It's sort of 50/50.

Creationists.

The government has already paid for the sensors.

They're isolationists. They do not care about America's standing in the world.

I thought it was rather sad when they removed those. That removal was fairly recent, too. I'm sure plenty of people were saying "who is Dan Bricklin?" but it added some needed character to the store.

> Back in the day they just planted a baggie of drugs on you.

Thank god that never happens anymore. I'm sure the bodycam era has ended all of that misbehavior and one could not possibly go to YouTube and find videos of cops in possession of that unique blend of corruption and stupidity that would lead them to plant drugs while being recorded. Ahem.

justin66··on The Unsung Hero of the Lord of the Rings (2025)
I honestly don't remember much about the Harvard Lampoon's Bored of the Rings but I'm pretty sure Tom Bombadil has a van and you don't want to get in it.

Or, depending on the context, perhaps give a thorough enough answer with citations that it should either answer questions on the topic fully or explain where anyone interested in the topic can do their own research, such that if the question is asked again one could just link to your previous post.

This might not satiate a poster if they're dumb enough, but it's worth remembering that the post will be searchable and usable for reference by other people.

justin66··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
Both. Microcenter tends to sell Raspberry Pi hardware at MSRP, and occasionally on sale a couple bucks below MSRP.

Adafruit tends to be a bit more expensive. It's never bothered me since I like the company and its service, but I think pretty much anything you buy there ought to be purchased with the thought that you're prototyping and if you want to buy many parts for a final product, you'll eventually want to source parts somewhere else. (or, I assume, call Adafruit and try to negotiate a better price)

It's understandable enough why both companies are this way. Microcenter is a retail chain and can do things Adafruit cannot. (in truth, they are partners on some things, so it's more complicated than that - the point is that Microcenter is a much larger company)

justin66··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
I'm sure Microcenter is not selling Pi Zeroes at a loss. They're an authorized retailer selling at the part's MSRP. They do sometimes make these available only in store, not online, once they sell out online and I don't think it's a mystery why a retail business would do that.
justin66··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
Weird. I can get one at the local Microcenter - with headers, the only one they're selling right now - for $18. They have a bunch in stock.

Literally none of the pis need cooling. Each is quite a bit faster than the previous generation even if you let it thermally throttle the cpu.
justin66··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
Hobbyists spend shittons of money on their hobbies. A drawer full of raspberry pis is nothing.

justin66··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
Most of the people buying raspberry pis are industrial customers who are not on the fence about whether to buy an SBC or someone’s trashed PC.
justin66··on Raspberry Pi 5 – 16GB RAM
Microcenter doubled the price of the 500+ kit shortly after I bought one. Still $90 cheaper than Adafruit, unsurprisingly.

> Why would normal people even want to become an unpaid janitor for someone else's stuff?

Social validation. Or, to be slightly more generous, sort of a compulsory way to force someone more experienced to provide some mentorship, by compelling them to review your pull requests.

justin66··on Steve Wozniak cheered after telling students they have AI – actual intelligence
This issue of separating the artist from his work is eternal and the comparison with some of these more contemporary issues you’re upset about rings a little hollow.

The issue of not wanting to give money to a (perceived to be) horrible person, or company, or cause seems somewhat valid to me, hence it does seem like there’s a distinction to be made between, for example, Asimov and Polanski. On the other hand, I might encourage the conflicted to question whether the fraction of a penny Polanski gets when somebody streams Chinatown really moves the needle…
