just_observing··on Ask HN: How do you motivate yourself?
There is no one single unfailing way for me to do this.

Some days it will be closing X issues, or a cold beer, or a gaming session with a friend, or tracking down that one annoying bug, or seeing that my numbers are low and I need to up my game (which can conflict with long work to find that bug of course), or reading a book, going for a bike ride.

There are other ways I do it but no single thing hits the spot for every day and every situation. Having a stock of various methods works though and I'm always happy to add another.

just_observing··on The best web browsers of 2016
To save you the trip:

Mozilla Firefox Editors' Choice

Firefox can't be beat when it comes to customizability and features. It's also fast, secure, and protects your privacy. It's our Editors' Choice for Web browsers.

Google Chrome

Google's Chrome browser is speedy, includes leading standards support, strong security features, and a clean interface, but it's no longer the fastest browser and it lacks some features found in the competition.

just_observing··on Skin cells might be used instead of eggs to make embryos
This makes sense in that it is less invasive and skin cells are more plentiful but the current invasive methods at least ensure that there is consent.

If you could surreptitiously get enough of someone's skin cells you could create an embryo with no consent. It's a given that this won't be within the ability of Mr and Mrs J Public but it's still something that creates concern.

just_observing··on Nextdoor, a local social network, has launched in the UK
This is deceptive.

I entered my details and it said that neighbours were already using it and gave examples. Examples that are very like those on the local (closed) fb group for the area. So I signed up.

And now it says there is no-one using it, I'm the first and I need to recruit 9 more people to make the area 'live'.

This is one certain way for me to avoid your product forever because if I can't trust you now I can't trust you at all.

just_observing··on iOS 10 released
It's actually iOS 10.0.1 along with the unavoidable iTunes upgrade to 12.5.1 (this is on El Capitan)
just_observing··on Someone just lost 324k payment records, complete with CVVs
"Let's talk about that CVV for a moment. ... PCI DSS is very clear about how the CVV (or CVV2 as it is these days) should be stored ... It shouldn't be stored and that's what makes this breach such a big issue. Violation of PCI DSS guidelines can lead to pretty serious fines and even loss of merchant facilities; the card providers take this very seriously.

It checked out - this is the CVV."

just_observing··on North Korea claims success in fifth nuclear test
"While private gunrunners continue to thrive, the world's biggest arms suppliers are the U.S., U.K., Russia, France, and China. They are also the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council."

Yuro Orlov: "I do rub shoulders with some of the most vile, sadistic men calling themselves leaders today. But some of those men are the enemies of your enemies. And while the biggest arms dealer in the world is your boss, the President of the United States, who ships more merchandise in a day than I do in a year, sometimes it's embarrassing to have his fingerprints on the guns. Sometimes he needs a freelancer like me to supply forces he can't be seen supplying. So, you call me evil, but unfortunately for you, I'm a necessary evil."

I'm on 48.0.1 - right click your bookmarks toolbar or Customise it. Hello and Pocket will be options - you may well have removed them?

Across the Atlantic here and it opens directly in a new tab. That's with uMatrix blocking several scripts though.

I'm guessing the site author is (1) young and (2) has a large monitor because that font is far far too small.

I have found Micro Snitch to be very useful:

This is Google. I assume they anticipate low expectations.

"There is, however, the issue of cost. Capture of the CO2 at power stations and other industrial complexes is expensive, and without incentives it is currently deemed to be uneconomic. The infrastructure needed to pump the gas to the burial site also has to be considered."

just_observing··on Fox 'uses' a gameplay video from YouTube, and removes the original with DMCA
Until there is a financial penalty for wrongful use of the DMCA this type of thing will continue.

They use robots to create reports (maybe not in this case) because for them there is simply zero downside.

That downside needs to exist.

"Sasha and a number of his fellow Google employees asked to be referred to by their first names, saying they were concerned for their safety”

"The rapport between original team members and their new peers was apparent as the crew gathered at the Craft Beer Co., a homey London pub"

and they show a picture of some of the team.

Not too worried then.

just_observing··on Show HN: Verbr – Reddit between friends
Well it's been 4 hours since I posted. I haven't been waiting and hoping, just came back to read the updates. After all, a post to Show HN would be watched pretty closely for feedback, yes?

Recent comments from Nestle CEO Peter Brabeck imply that the world's water will soon come under the control of corporations like his. Brabeck makes the astonishing claim that water is not a human right, but should be managed by business people and governing bodies. He wants water controlled, privatized, and delegated in a way that sustains the planet.
