julius_geezer··on Could You Have Passed the 8th Grade in 1895? Take a Look
Right, I definitely feel bad to have forgotten Aspinwall, if ever I knew where it was. Yet I doubt that anyone worth reading has used the word "fane" since about Alfred Lord Tennyson--I won't feign shame for missing that one.

I bet a fair number of HN readers (the Americans anyway), could pass Grammar, History, and Geography. So remind me what critical thinking Orthography feeds.

julius_geezer··on Born in the USA? Some Chinese plan it that way
This was popular with Korean moms some years back.
julius_geezer··on Just released a new political advocacy tool: MailCongress.org
So, I am a candidate to use this if I care enough but an issue to mail my representatives but either

1. I do not know who they are.

2. I do not have a way to commit my words to paper and mail them to the representatives.

I don't say that there aren't people who will find this convenient, but it seems a narrow market.

julius_geezer··on Phrases that announce ‘I’m lying‘
Really, if there were a point to the essay, she might have included "I'm not prejudiced, but..." after which some feel free to let go with remarks to give Ben Tillman pause.
julius_geezer··on Prof Gives Lecture to Prove He Knows Students Cheated; Over 200 Students Confess
A close relative teaches in a continuing-ed masters program. The first two or three times she taught the class, the grades on the midterm were OK, but reasonably distributed. This fall, they were uniformly excellent. She concluded that the students had copies of her exams from previous semesters, and rewrote the final.

As far as I know, it never occurred to her to tell the students off. Of course, these are twenty-somethings and probably a lot less susceptible to brow-beating.

julius_geezer··on LaTeX coffee stains
Clearly the next thing we need is a package to add blood, sweat, and tear marks.
julius_geezer··on How time is a made-up mental construct
Gosh, what a concept. Wonder if anybody's pondered this before...
julius_geezer··on The Autocrat's Algorithm: Is Google News helping to spread propaganda?
""We can't allow ourselves to be out-communicated by our enemies."

I don't regard RT as a friend, but "enemies"?

It is also worth mentioning that the notionally respectable media has a very mixed record over the years. Look up Walter Duranty for one example, Robert McCormick for another.

julius_geezer··on In the Grip of the New Monopolists
Google is the only one I use constantly. I've been on Amazon this out of curiosity to see what people said about a book I disliked, but haven't bought anything from them in years. Facebook? No. Twitter? No.
julius_geezer··on "Get fired, it’s a great learning experience"
I don't disagree, but getting fired can be hard on the cash flow.
julius_geezer··on Modern Perl, the book, is Available.
I'll have to ask the local bookstore.
julius_geezer··on Ask HN: How do you track progress of reading technical books?
Make a directory on your machine for the book, with subdirectories for each chapter. Put the code files for the problems/examples in the proper place and you should have no doubts.

Mark up the book (well, if it's paper) as you go. And the expression "bookmark" did not always involve URLs.

julius_geezer··on Ask HN: Help me convince a teacher we should learn Python (vs VB.net)
Disclaimer: I don't know VB.NET, I barely know VBScript,

I do think that Python would make an excellent intro language, given that there is relatively little syntactic cruft hiding the bones. (To be sure, it was not my first language, so this is speculation.) PythonWin is an excellent environment. wxPython makes it straightforward to put together GUIs if that's what you want to do. You can write to the Google App Engine and deploy to the web for $0.00.

The point that others raise, that it would be bad if the teacher is also learning an unfamiliar language, is a valid one. I don't think you want your instructor to be stuck fighting the language.

Have you considered as an alternative doing LPTHW on the side with your friends?

julius_geezer··on "They all look alike": Understanding the "other race effect"
I remember looking at a high-school yearbook from the beehive hairdo era and remarking to the owner, Geez, you all really wanted to look just alike. I went to high school in a day and place where the girls grew their hair long and left it down, and in looking at that yearbook, all I could see was the beehives.

In fact, at a second look, of course the faces were quite distinguishable. No doubt they were more readily distinguishable then and there because varying hairdos did not distract one from the faces.

julius_geezer··on WWII Dutch intelligence leader's story inspired book, film
A remarkable man, well worth hearing about.
julius_geezer··on WWII Dutch intelligence leader's story inspired book, film
As a United Statesian, I might question the practicality in the foreseeable future. I would certainly point out that a belief in mankind and its freedom is the sort of thing that can be invoked for a decision to invade Iraq, or to imagine that a US-style constitution is now practical for Afghanistan.

There is this to be said for patriotism, that a more particular commitment has a better chance of realizing itself in action rather than sentiment. Obviously, one should not use it to excuse bad actions. G.K. Chesterton's remark that "My country right or wrong" is equivalent to "My mother, drunk or sober" certainly applies.

julius_geezer··on The New Elite
1. Apart from the fake populism, I was struck in the print edition by the Southernization of America--I'm supposed to car about stock car racing and and country music? Back in the day those were amusements that started south of the Ohio.

2."Why is football more American than yoga?" I guess you could ask the guys who advertise beer, tires, and pharmaceuticals for the ills of the baby boomers.

julius_geezer··on Exercise 'can prevent a cold', a study shows
I had a wonderful run a few Sundays ago (well, wonderful for my middle-aged self), rolled home feeling great, then woke up in the middle of the night with a hot raw patch in the top of my mouth and a couple of days of misery coming on.

But I suspect it wasn't the cold coming on that did for me, on the one hand, more likely exposure to somebody with a new and improved bug a day or so before. And on the other hand, I'm not sure that co-workers who got to listen to me cough would have considered the run worth it.

julius_geezer··on Modern art was CIA 'weapon'
As secrets go, this didn't seem to make it very far. Czeslaw Milosz's notice of the Congress for Cultural Freedom in _Milosz's ABCs_, says "you could smell big money a mile away, and the French, who were stewing in their anti-Americanism, boycotted it totally."

There is something amusing about the US government, through whatever agency, funding Abstract Expressionism hardly two decades after building all those post offices with WPA murals that I suppose one might call Socialist Realist.

julius_geezer··on Ask HN: Having emotional breakdown
I guess it depends on the resources available. If the counselors are as bad as you say the professors are, seeing a counselor might not help. But you might do well to give them a shot, and then decide. Otherwise, I will say that

1. The man who did not waste a great deal of time at your age is unusual and fortunate. As for self confidence, it seems to distributed every evenly among those who have reasons for it and those who have none; in my day I met quite a few undergraduates with great self confidence that may have carried over from being in a cool crowd in high school, but who seemed to me to be of very little interest.

2. Some of the future is in your hands, but none of the past is. Evaluate your past for what it can do for you, but try not to dwell on it.

3. Trust me, it is not only in India that one meets dud professors.

julius_geezer··on Colleges single out students by name for not donating to student-gift drives
How impressively obnoxious. Were I singled out, I think I'd start agitating to have my fellow students revoke their pledges, cancel their checks, etc.
julius_geezer··on Prison Economics Help Drive Ariz. Immigration Law
I guess one question is whether the bulk of the illegal immigrants in Arizona at any one time are using it as a residence or just passing through. This would definitely make it less attractive as a residence, but its advantages for transit are considerable.

The prison business has had some curious effects elsewhere a judge went to jail up around Scranton for abusing his power to send kids to jail for offenses that ordinarily might've rated probation before judgment; he was compensated by the company that ran juvenile prisons up there.

julius_geezer··on Ask HN: Programming Language for Ambitious MBA
I would vote Python, simply for the PythonWin environment.
julius_geezer··on Ask HN: How does having a baby change your life?
Well, you're on somebody else's schedule for the next many years. Get out of the late night feeding world, and presently you're coordinating schedules with day-care providers and then schools (not always to be distinguished) that you cannot afford to upset. (I vividly remember one Friday afternoon at the end of the government fiscal year; some chosen software was taking a divide-by-zero error on DOS 4.0, and the COTR wanted to know whether she should pull the invoice and buy from a competitor. Meanwhile I had a babysitter who needed a check before she left the country for a couple of weeks. Fortunately, a quick repartition to bring C: back under 32 MB fixed the problem. I was home by 5 pm.)

It does not make everything else seem uninteresting--children can open up new areas of interest for you. But your priorities change drastically.

julius_geezer··on Ask HN: How many hours of sleep do you need to have a productive day?
I like to get at least seven hours during the week and aim for nine Friday and Saturday nights. I can do a couple of days of six hours or less, but my efficiency goes way down.

These days I'm not a good daytime sleeper. It could be that what I need is blackout shades, but it suits my preferences to be up and about early.

julius_geezer··on Winning The World Series With Math
1. Stupid question, but are runners allowed to run out there in foul territory?

2. The most usual cases where speed matters are two and three base advances--double, triple, second to home on a single. I'd think the advantage would diminish in proportion.

julius_geezer··on Book Spines
Also Italian.

I really don't care, either, except that it can lead to discomfort when one is browsing a mixed shelf, say at book sale.

julius_geezer··on Ask HN: Why not PHP?
Unfortunately, the question is harder to answer when put naively. How is a beginner supposed to evaluate what somebody says about closures, lambdas, type checking?

I would recommend learning Python. Python for Windows is a very handy environment; you can fool around with Google App Engine if you care to, or run Django or whatever locally.

I would recommend rephrasing your questions along these lines: I am a beginner interested in starting with web applications. What languages and frameworks do you think most promising to learn on, and where can I find good examples to illustrate the principles?

julius_geezer··on Ask HN: Why not PHP?
I think it was Cocteau, who asked to name France's greatest poet replied "Victor Hugo, helas." No question, if you're looking for rhymes, English gives you a tougher task. But if you think it's about the rhymes, maybe you should be doing something else.
julius_geezer··on Defend PHP; convince me it isn't horrible
Only a 1000 lines? Man, you are living the easy life.
