julio_the_squid··on Ask HN: Google Goes Popular?
I agree, plus their word mangling/assumptions are out of control. I often have to use double quotes to make it clear that yes, what I typed in is what I'm searching for.
julio_the_squid··on How unique -- and trackable -- is your web browser?
Have any non-default fonts installed or anything like that?
julio_the_squid··on Adobe Plays the Porn Card in Flash Campaign Against iPad
It's noble to pretend that porn isn't important to people, but um... it is.
julio_the_squid··on Google Twists Knife In IE6, Pulls Support From Docs And Sites
I noticed that when I open IE6 for testing (using iesforlinux actually), about 1/3 of the time it redirects to an IE8 download page, rather than showing the home page I have set in the options.

Also, some of MS's own pages on bing/live throw scripting errors in IE6! If they're not paying attention to IE6, I hope that means I don't have to any more, either.

julio_the_squid··on How to Snatch an Expiring Domain
Interesting, I've long suspected some companies might engage in such practices... I guess one plan is if a domain you want is free right then, buy it immediately. Also, I hate GoDaddy so that takes of that issue...
julio_the_squid··on Lisp Quotes
Is intended to be an endorsement of Lisp, or are you saying something along the lines of 'The Jonas Brothers are better than Mozart because so many more people listen to them these days'?
julio_the_squid··on How to Snatch an Expiring Domain
It's listed at the bottom of the article - newsvine.com.
julio_the_squid··on IE was reportedly the attack vector for China's hacking into Google
What I wonder about IE is how sites or access points set cookie without there even being a browser window open. When I go to certain coffee shops, I'll see the 'this and this site is trying to set a cookie' popup (since I have IE set not to accept cookies) and I don't even have IE open!
julio_the_squid··on IE was reportedly the attack vector for China's hacking into Google
The equivalent salary for a top-notch engineer in China is about 12-25% of the US rate, however.
julio_the_squid··on Linux on the desktop 2010, your honest thoughts?
I set up my mother's laptop with Ubuntu and she is perfectly happy with it. It stopped the constant cycle of viruses/spyware I was having to fix, and everything works just the same as far as she's concerned.
julio_the_squid··on Linux on the desktop 2010, your honest thoughts?
I've used Linux as my main desktop OS for 12 years and I'm 100% happy with it. I feel horribly restricted when I try to use Windows for anything other than web browsing.
julio_the_squid··on Microsoft finds new use for screensavers
The Google Desktop Sidebar has a little picture slideshow that shows random pictures from any where on your machine, or from folders you select. You can disallow certain folders, too, if you have images you'd rather not have showing up on your Desktop. I like it for the same reasons; it brings up images and entire vacations I hadn't thought of in a long time.

I'm sure other people have made random images screensavers, haven't they? It doesn't seem like a new idea.

julio_the_squid··on Conway's Game Of Life in one line of APL
J is essentially the new version of APL using ascii rather than the odd symbols, if I'm not mistaken? I'd love to see a version in J.
julio_the_squid··on [dead]
Apparently 4chan was planning a reprise for tomorrow. I don't know why this article came up in BBC's most popular list right now, as it's indeed from May.
julio_the_squid··on Successful Lisp: How to Understand and Use Common Lisp
Great, it looks like a good book and a valuable resources. It's a shame about the publishing situation. I've been interested in Lisp and scheme for some time, but haven't found a way to learn it by accomplishing something with Lisp yet. I'm looking forward to finding a project.

"Oh, and one more thing: It's not quite true that no mass market product uses Lisp. Microsoft's "Bob" environment for naive computer users was developed (and delivered) in Lisp."

Okay, I'm sold! But really, MS was using Lisp in the 90s?

julio_the_squid··on Run PowerShell as a shell within Emacs
I found that in Firefox with any screen width less than the text + the two sidebars, the sidebars overlap the text content. I tried it in IE6 actually, and the sidebars don't show at all! Pretty lousy layout.
julio_the_squid··on Make tags not trees - filesystem based on tags instead of directories
An FS that supported indexing and querying of files through metadata was a key feature of BeOS, actually.

And yes, MS claimed their project, 'WinFS', would be a key part of Vista (aka Longhorn), but then dropped it in 2006.

julio_the_squid··on Poll: Have you ever "borrowed" other people's code/layout etc?
Thanks, I'm pretty sure I know who you mean now, actually. I ran into a couple posts on a freelance site where and Indian company said 'We designed a clone of Etsy.com, check out _____.com'. Not exactly the way I'd go about creating a site, personally.
julio_the_squid··on The world’s hardest (for native English speakers) languages
I find this really interesting from the perspective of programming languages.

The languages that add on information not required in English reminds me of type declaration for variables versus languages where you don't have to declare a type, for instance.

What computer languages are the hardest to learn (for a C speaker?). How does the design of the language influence the thoughts one has or can easily express in that language? (We know it does matter, Whorf or no Whorf!)

julio_the_squid··on Browser Pong
Well, the source simply being viewable for JavaScript is not the same as all JS being released under an open source license! I guess this is kind of like an open source license, though.
julio_the_squid··on Microsoft pulls China blog site amid code-theft charges
Apparently, the cool thing to do is now to defend Microsoft, actually, even in the face of ridiculous transgressions and clear unlawful and unethical behavior. I can't believe that people are giving them a pass on this 'oh, a 3rd party developer did everything and it was all their fault!' excuse. Somehow I doubt that Plurk was elated to find that a giant corporation had thoroughly imitated their site. Probably, once they saw that the exact code had been lifted,it was a relief, though, as they knew that couldn't stand.
julio_the_squid··on Microsoft pulls China blog site amid code-theft charges
Whether I, an English speaker in the US, has visited plurk is irrelevant - they are the leader in this market in Asia, apparently.

Whether it was 'unique' or not, the UI delivered was nearly identical to Plurk's and was obviously a copy.

The idea that MS is not responsible because a third party created this is absurd; a company is responsible for what you purchase and release under their own name. Whomever was responsible for commissioning , accepting or supervising this project obviously should have been aware of existing sites. Clearly, someone failed in a supervisory role here.

julio_the_squid··on Microsoft pulls China blog site amid code-theft charges
But for a new site to be released like this, either

a> MS does not review the work of their subcontractors, or

b> whomever reviewed the new site was not familiar with their major competitor in the region.

Does either seem very likely?

julio_the_squid··on Microsoft rips off Plurk
Microsoft didn't seem to have a problem with going quite public with it.
julio_the_squid··on Stack stats
I recognize Jon Skeet, Quassnoi, Alex Martelli and cletus... but I know them all from Stack Overflow. I wouldn't say all of those people are famous anywhere in particular other than there?
julio_the_squid··on I'll sue you if you use my common-sense JavaScript tests
David Mark is an anti-jQuery crusader. He is known for speaking ill of people who use the library as well as the developers (John Resig in particular). He insists that jQuery is responsible for all of the sites across the internet that have JavaScript errors.

julio_the_squid··on Patent Application from "Steven Jobs et al": Advertisement in Operating System
Then to continue that paragraph it says 'The presentation of the advertisement(s) can be made as part of an approach where the user obtains a good or service, such as the operating system, for free or at a reduced cost'.

I assume their logic is somewhat like we have ad-subsidized web sites (i.e. most of them), so why not ad subsidized devices? Shown on page 4 as part of the 'Advertising Control' components is 'Buy Ad Free Version'.

My guess is that this would be tied into a reduced cost iPhone. If you look down the page though, they show plans for how it would be integrated into desktop MacOS.

julio_the_squid··on How A Kid Earned $2m Before He Could Drink – And The Shocking Way He Lost It
What about interest and electronically created debt? It doesn't depend on the Fed printing anything.
julio_the_squid··on Poll: Have you ever "borrowed" other people's code/layout etc?
Ha, that's great. I'd love to know which site that was.

Really, Etsy doesn't have anything worth copying other than the basic idea and well, their success. Their copy and wording least of all... anytime there are words on the site, they are the wrong words.
