juiced··on Ask HN: Why don't companies hire programmers for fewer hours per day?
Why don't companies hire programmers for 6 hours a day, but keep paying for 8 hours a day? As a company you will probably attract the best in the field - programmers who are 4 times as efficient - and the programmer is not able to keep his/her concentration for 8 hours a day anyway.

I don't care about religion or sexual preferences either, to me it was just surprising that 2 brothers actually feel that they are a woman, something you don't hear everyday but is entirely possible. And I thought maybe this is hackernews worthy because the Wachowski's are maybe some hacker's heroes.

I had problems with WOL on Windows 10 too...my solution was to just update the networkcard drivers to the latest version, get them from the manufacturer.
juiced··on Show HN: WifiMask – Public Wi-Fi security for everybody (on OS X)
Hi HN! My brother and I made WifiMask for the "normal" computer user to protect his or her public Wi-Fi connection.

Most normal computer users already know by now that public Wi-Fi is not safe, some of them know that something called "VPN" can protect them, but don't know what the next step is or if the next step is the right one, current VPN providers often being too confusing with too much options and features or simply because they do not have a focus on public Wi-Fi security.

Hence its name, WifiMask, and a very easy to use and elegant app with a focus on public Wi-Fi security it is clear from the first moment that WifiMask is the right choice to protect your public Wi-Fi connection, there is no room for doubt about it.

WifiMask uses OpenVPN, strong encryption (AES256, 4096-bit RSA & DH) and takes care of DNS leaking, DNS hi-jacking and IPv6 leaking, something some of the other VPN apps forget about. Firewall rules to prevent leaking un-encrypted data are active as soon as you hit Connect (before you're even connected to a Wi-Fi) and when the connection is lost, until you hit Disconnect.

In other words: WifiMask automatically takes care of as much as possible with a focus on security and usability, while making it clear it's all about protecting your Wi-Fi connection. WifiMask is a public Wi-Fi security service and uses VPN technology to make it happen.

We'd love to hear what you guys and girls think about it, the app and the website! Any feedback and suggestions are welcome.

PS. For now there is only an OSX app, but expect apps for every platform in the future.

I'm very surprised there is no mention at all about the safety of the VPN clients. Your biggest problem concerning privacy could be IPv6 leaking and DNS hi-jacking and leaking. You can have a trillion-bits VPN connection for IPv4 traffic, no logging, warrant canaries etc., but if your IPv6 traffic, which most browsers prefer, is not going through this tunnel you can say goodbye to your privacy. The same for DNS leaking, if you are still using your default DNS servers after setting up a VPN connection everybody can see what websites your are visiting or redirect your requests. And to prevent DNS hi-jacking your VPN client should at least use your VPN gateway as a DNS server. I built WifiMask (https://www.wifimask.com), which is not in the list, and is not vulnerable to any of these.

How secure is this? I'm thinking about crafted tweets which executes shellscripts for example, don't know if this is possible.
juiced··on Why Is the Dollar Sign a Letter S?
Turns out that the Dollar (0.88 Euro), derived from the Dutch word Daalder, today has the exact same value as this Daalder (2.50 guilders) before it became the Euro (2.20371 guilders), after calculating the inflation rate.
