juangacovas··on Ask HN: What do I need to learn how to write a scalable app?
Where exactly is your bottleneck right now? Database queries? I mean, where those >300ms go, foreach request or just some of them?
juangacovas··on Ask HN: What is the cheapest way to make a website?
You can get cheaper domains, i.e. Porkbun.com is running a 3 per user $4.15 for .com (just looked, I'm happy with them)
juangacovas··on Roll Your Own Frameworks
Ummm, it as Sylex, not Slim, that got discontinued
juangacovas··on The 5.7 kernel is out
I update CentOS boxes kernel using "ElRepo" and works out fine, for my use case (webservers, etc)
juangacovas··on Why does OpenBSD still include Perl in its base installation?
A pretty amount of tools still use Perl under the hood and I'm pretty sure some of the "granted, they just work" tools that we're used to be just there or install, use Perl in some way.

Two examples I can give in my case are the good old rsnapshot, and CSF firewall

juangacovas··on Roll Your Own Frameworks
Yeah, it could be the case and then I was wrong about it being discontinued
juangacovas··on The original source code of Microsoft GW-BASIC from 1983
Probably you want to try out PCem when dosbox doesn't do the trick. Was a lot of fun for me! I made a small page about PCem here: https://juangacovas.info/doku.php/windows/howtos/pcemu-page
juangacovas··on Roll Your Own Frameworks
Friend of mine. Slim framework not updated anymore. Cannot make it work in recent php versions, so a fragment of a big corp needs to be maintained and isolated. I know, happens everywhere
juangacovas··on It’s Time to Build
Germany having top pharma factories for things like testing and other medical stuff seems a good reason
juangacovas··on Ask HN: Utility for syncing a folder across two devices?
lsyncd: https://axkibe.github.io/lsyncd/
juangacovas··on How I write back ends
+1 and I'm sure the article could inspire others to do the same with other stacks. I like how it compares to other similar stack where OS is CentOS, serverside lang is just PHP and some other layers added, like HAProxy and/or Varnish cache, or even Apache or Lighttpd instead of the omnipresent Nginx for the webserver
juangacovas··on Ask HN: How do those eMMC Windows laptops work?
I bought a HP stream with 128GB internal storage for 199 € and it's serving me well because of weight (1 kg) and purpose (writing, connect to remote servers via ssh). Being a Celeron you can't do fancy things but it's ok. You can extend the storage capacity with microSD cards.
juangacovas··on Offline and back again: Surviving the PHP 7 upgrade by adding one letter
In terms of PHP, the strange thing here is you didn't get any errors (at least in logs). The default behaviour in webhosts is having PHP "display_errors" to off (so "blank pages", 500), BUT error_log enabled to some file that is accessible to you.

If nothing is shown at error logs, then you should try setting "error_reporting" to E_ALL and you should see something at logs after executing your PHP code.

juangacovas··on Surviving Software Dependencies
It's a matter of balance, always. A thin line. And dogmas that people on teams follow (we all do in some way).

Not invented here syndrome, always create a class, always put a class in its own file, premature optimization blablah, don't use goto, this and that is bad practice in that language, don't optimize until you need it (but you later don't have time to profile, or don't really want to...)

juangacovas··on Ask HN: Am I being paid enough in Europe?
Curious about "minimal homes" there. Do they exist?
juangacovas··on Ask HN: What’s Your Backups System?
Have you tried the good, old "rsnapshot"? If you master passwordless ssh with rsync, it's a breeze to setup
juangacovas··on Perl is dying
And if sometime in the future Perl is no longer included by default, it will be installed "by dependency" just when you install packages like rsnapshot, CSF firewall, etc. and probably a big bunch of tools that nobody would guess are written in Perl (or some tools of the package)
juangacovas··on Ask HN: PostgreSQL or MySQL?
You also get "mariabackup" which is a fork of perconabackup for consistent, physical backups of InnoDB and Aria/MyISAM
juangacovas··on The C4 model for visualising software architecture
Then your code, for some people, is not enterprisey enough and of course not maintanable over time..
juangacovas··on 5 practical tips for the first-time manager
As a first-time developer promoted to manager 3 years ago, of a small team, IMO this is good advice and well written. I would add about trusting your team members and delegation, well, you get to learn what everyone can accomplish, identify weaknesses and couch when needed, but it's not instant magic. So not everything is always on track. Add that some of us have to manage and still deliver code (by choice or not) and you have the common sense and advice saying you can't do both, but need to keep up coaching, helping when things go wrong, etc.

So it's not just about following advice, real world hits just as in development estimations...

juangacovas··on Ask HN: What are some architectural decisions that improved your codebase?
I like to use curly brace jump shortcut and interactively debug my code and other's code to avoid being too picky about this stuff, unless you have to stick to 80x24 kernel surface ;P
juangacovas··on Ask HN: How do you keep your programming motivation up?
"the further down the stack you go" is the reason I love English (being Spanish)
juangacovas··on Ask HN: How comfortable do you feel using cloud-based password managers?
+1 for the sync/conflicts resolution of Keepass. Also I think that putting a shared database (file) on a shared folder at the office if needed is an overlooked feature..
juangacovas··on Debian 10 Buster: First impressions on a 2017 laptop with an M.2 NVMe SSD
Not good hearing only "things" from biased people
juangacovas··on Ask HN: Where do you keep your Knowledge Base?
Dokuwiki with some plugins for me
juangacovas··on Free Software network services and web applications which can be hosted locally
Slow? PHP 7? Or are you just saying this particular software?
juangacovas··on All the best engineering advice I stole from non-technical people
Here in Mallorca island some call germans "cap quadrats" (being "square heads") for a reason. I'm sure they also call us names...
juangacovas··on Ask HN: Don't want to write CRUD apps for the rest of my career, what to do?
My case is the opposite, went from videogames to "boring" B2B web apps. I find myself applying techniques for performance and other stuff (almost everything) to another domains and it is fun, at least for more than 10 years now. And users DO see the difference from poorly written web apps. My two cents
juangacovas··on Ask HN: Best free compute and other resources for startups?
What OS and distro do you use for a cheap 256 MB vps? Wondering and wishing to play hehe
juangacovas··on Problems with DSLs for non-programmers
Yep. But they're overused and underused each day... Everything can be a spreadsheet and nobody questions if there are better ways of holding that particular data
