jtsiskin··on Apple announces ‘upgrade’ to App Store pricing, adding 700 new price points
Imagine two apps you’re scrolling by in the App Store. One is $5, the other is $4.99. Barely going attention (essentially picking subconsciously rather than consciously), you choose one to click first. What are the odds you clicked the $4.99 one?
jtsiskin··on Mistaken beliefs about how much to talk in conversations
“In Study 3, we tested the accuracy of these forecasts by randomly assigning participants to speak for 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, or 70% of the time in a dyadic conversation.“

This study does not correlate to the real word at all. A computer telling you when you should speak is so different from a natural conversation. In the real world, you’re not speaking because you’re listening, intentionally; in the study, you’re not speaking because the computer said who’s turn it was.

jtsiskin··on The First Negative Dimension
This dimension is just called “existence”
jtsiskin··on Bitcoin worth $1.5B withdrawn from Coinbase in 48 hours
It’s a lot easier to hide a piece of paper than it is to hide stacks of cash or gold.

Unscrew and hide behind a doorknob or a light switch, the inside of a clock, the bottom of a dresser, inside the wall trim, the leg of a couch, etc.

Then add controls on the wallet itself - only x can be withdrawn every 24 hours, and m out of n recovery methods (your trusted friends and family, a service which validated your email/ phone number, a pass phrase, an in-person office which validates your id and passport for a fee, etc), and you can be as secure as any bank.

jtsiskin··on How Precision Time Protocol is being deployed at Meta
At Meta you choose what team you want to work on during a 3 month “bootcamp” period, very different from Google, Amazon, etc. There’s enough teams solving hard distributed system problems that you’re guaranteed to never need to think about button copy

jtsiskin··on U.S. fines airlines more than $7M for not providing refunds
Airports also have an incentive to keep the TSA lines as variable as possible.

If the line can sometimes take 5 minutes and sometimes take 2 hours, you need to arrive 2 hours early. And then if it actually takes just 5 minutes - that’s 1:55 left for buying food and shopping.

jtsiskin··on Fifteen New Tests Reveal Tesla FSD Still Runs Down Child-Sized Mannequins
By this argument, all human driven machines are murder machines. All.
jtsiskin··on Programmers should plan for lower pay (2019)
Everything digital has marginal costs near 0. Books, TV, movies, art, newspapers, photos, etc. (obviously, talking about the digital version of all these). Yet a lot of these fields are known for low pay.

You can send your frames encrypted even if there’s an SFU.
jtsiskin··on Ask HN: Inherited the worst code and tech team I have ever seen. How to fix it?
Yes, but the parent is saying this could be an e-commerce website, or construction company, etc. But having an iOS app feels unnecessary for most of these businesses
jtsiskin··on How to pay your rent with your open source project (2020)
What I dislike about this model is it incentivizes insane and complicated build processes. You’re incentives not to make a simple docker image

Aw man. The author is going to be pretty sad when they learn that the brain is made of atoms.
jtsiskin··on I quit my Netflix engineer $450k/year job, money wasn't worth the boredom
Incredible. Rather than quit they relaxed for a few months, then convinced Netflix to fire them early with a severance package.

jtsiskin··on Girl's Cancer Leads Mom to Discover over 50 Sick Kids Near Nuclear Lab
“In 2002, a Department of Energy (DOE) official described typical waste disposal procedures used by Field Lab employees in the past. Workers would dispose of barrels filled with radioactive sodium by dumping them in a pond and then shooting the barrels with rifles so that they would explode and release their contents into the air.[29] Since, the pit has been remediated by having 22,000 cubic yards of soil removed down 10-12 feet to bedrock.[29]

On 26 July 1994, two scientists, Otto K. Heiney and Larry A. Pugh were killed when the chemicals they were illegally burning in open pits exploded. “

… I think there’s more here than just the reactor meltdown.

And also, this was in 1959. Compare that to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springhill_mining_disasters. “Safe” is relative
