jtmarmon··on Launch HN: SheerlyGenius (YC W18) – Indestructible Tights from Bulletproof Fiber
I do not wear pantyhose, so forgive me for naiivety, but I would love to know

1) Is the price not a bit high for something that you can only wear 50 times? I suppose i'm not sure what the price per wear is of traditional pantyhose

2) Why does something so strong (e.g. you can try to pull them apart) only last 50 wears? Seems like it's stronger than any tshirt I've worn but I continue to wear them for years

jtmarmon··on The Largest Number of Scientists in Modern U.S. Is Running for Office in 2018
That parasite website is so weird. It sounds so negative, like a piece of satire, but then you read the actual text and it sounds like a serious award whose goal is to encourage rigor in scientific research.

Whose stupid idea was it to call it the Parasite Award

Common | NYC | https://www.common.com Common is building housing for cities that are designed from the ground up for roommates. We build beautiful, furnished homes, provide shared supplies and cleaning, and find roommates to live together. Members can transfer between any home in our 5 cities.

In October 2015, we opened up our first coliving home in Brooklyn. Since then, we’ve expanded to 14 homes across 5 major cities. We also just raised a $40M Series C https://technical.ly/brooklyn/2017/12/20/coliving-gets-real-..., largely to grow our team of 5 engineers.

Technology is at the heart of Common. From our marketing, to our sales pipeline, to our leasing, billing, and member management, nothing we do has been done before. We build a lot of technology to create operating leverage and provide a better experience for our members. Here are some of the roles we're hiring for (left hand is relevant skills, right hand is job listing):

jtmarmon··on Curry spice turmeric boosts memory by nearly 30%, eases depression, study finds
Did some research and it seems to be somewhat more effective than curcumin+piperine:

Piperine study (PS): https://turmericaustralia.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/...

Theracumin study (TS): https://www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/bpb/36/11/36_b13-00150/...

In TS table 3 shows the Cmax was 25.5ng after 30mg of theracumin.

In PS table 2 shows the Cmax was 180ng after 2000mg of curcumin + 20mg of piperine (the table says 2g/kg but after reading the Materials and Methods section I believe this is just a typo. 2g/kg would be a ton of curcumin).

So comparing the two, it seems that Theracumin was absorbed 10x more per mg consumed. Of course, the question is if you consume equal amounts of Theracumin and Curcumin + Piperine, would the absorption rate hold, which we can't answer, but seems pretty promising.

jtmarmon··on A pattern language for microservices
predictable repeatable and maintainable are all great and important things. But micro services makes everything you do less predictable repeatable and maintainable. You must automate many more things with micro services to achieve the same level of predictable repeatable and maintainable as you have with a monolith.

There are many possible benefits of microservices, few of which outweigh the massive costs for many (dare I say most) startups.

jtmarmon··on A pattern language for microservices
Thanks for being so candid. I made the same mistake at my startup when given the chance to start greenfield due to a pivot. I ate my pride and switched back to a monolith after realizing I was spending more time doing devops than I was coding.
jtmarmon··on Sam Altman: ‘Too many’ Y Combinator companies raise money

Sounds like they're saying they're going to programmatically invest in companies based on metrics alone.

Which is probably a bad idea, because there's almost always more to the picture than a few statistics can convey. And the relevant statistics vary by what the business does.

jtmarmon··on Overweight and obesity are linked to cancer
No disagreement here. As I said, it's not that they aren't bad, it's that saturated fat isn't the reason they're bad. I'm with you that doritos should be nixed from any person's regular diet
jtmarmon··on Overweight and obesity are linked to cancer
A steak has roughly 21g of sat fat per serving, though. So you'd have to eat 7 bags of Doritos to eat the equivalent of a steak.

My point is not that Doritos aren't bad for you but that saturated fat isn't the reason they're bad

jtmarmon··on Overweight and obesity are linked to cancer
It is hilarious, although I left it the lower risk of all type mortality since OP was specifically talking about saturated fat being linked to heart disease. But yes people should probably eat less pasta and more steak
jtmarmon··on Overweight and obesity are linked to cancer
a bag of cool ranch doritos has 1 gram of saturated fat. saturated fat is not linked with heart disease

http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-67...

Total fat and saturated and unsaturated fats were not significantly associated with risk of myocardial infarction or cardiovascular disease mortality.

jtmarmon··on YC’s Essential Startup Advice
This is a bit of a meta question but I've found that I've almost never learned anything from reading posts like this. I've scanned them over and nodded in agreement, only to make the mistakes I've been warned against and then I finally understand what people were telling me all these years.

Does YC have an approach on how to actually get founders to take advice to heart instead of just understanding at a surface level?
