jtfrench··on Claude.ai is unavailable
Hopefully Mythos didn't go rogue and hold production hostage.
jtfrench··on Claude.ai unavailable and elevated errors on the API
If this can happen to Anthropic, imagine all the companies building on top of Claude Code for live products. Hopefully the industry is learning that competent problem solving human engineers are still very much needed when you have increasingly deceptive non-deterministic genies running your production stack.
jtfrench··on Tim Cook Is Leaving. Good
Working on Snow Leopard was one of my most rewarding experiences at Apple. Loved the ethos behind that update. No new fluff, just make everything work better.
jtfrench··on EvanFlow – A TDD driven feedback loop for Claude Code
How does this handle “dumb zone” evasion while looping?
jtfrench··on We've raised $17M to build what comes after Git
Definitely sounded like a shower gel moment.
jtfrench··on Moving from GitHub to Codeberg, for lazy people
Haven’t heard of Codeberg. What are the top reasons to switch from GitHub?
jtfrench··on MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max
Was hoping to see Apple break the 128GB barrier in a laptop that they previously set, though 128GB is still pretty sweet for local LLM inference on consumer hardware. My 128GB M3 Max is still shredding tokens pretty well (with that annoying slow initial prompt processing), so no major complaints there. I guess the question is, given access to the same amount of RAM, does the M5 really do an order-of-magnitude better than 128GB on a M3 or M4?
jtfrench··on Bugs Apple loves
I feel heard. Auto-correct un-correcting what I corrected three times in a row is maddening.
jtfrench··on ICE's Tool to Monitor Phones in Neighborhoods
What if their maximally vindictive traits just makes them want to use the same invasive tools and techniques?
jtfrench··on Show HN: Jmail – Google Suite for Epstein files
No way. Next level.
jtfrench··on A series of tricks and techniques I learned doing tiny GLSL demos
Awesome stuff. Moonlight and Archipelago are particularly beautiful. I work in shaders fairly regularly (mainly Metal-based), and it still amazes me how so little code can produce seemingly infinite universes.
jtfrench··on Show HN: C++ order book matching engine (3.2M orders/SEC, ~320ns)
Looks super interesting! Does it have support for auction mechanics (e.g. dutch auction)?
jtfrench··on Show HN: Fixing Google Nano Banana Pixel Art with Rust
Go Hugo!
jtfrench··on Did rust take down the internet? [video]
So they force-unwrapped a `null` and blew up the internet?

Would an `unwrap_or_else` have helped here?

jtfrench··on Google DeepMind: Introducing SIMA 2 [video]
Google: "I'll see your Marble and raise you a SIMA2".

This industry moves redonkulously fast.

jtfrench··on Marble: A Multimodal World Model
Is Marble's definition of a "world model" the same as Yann LeCun's definition of a world model? And is that the same as Genie's definition of a world model?
jtfrench··on Marble: A Multimodal World Model
I like that they distinguish between the collider mesh (lower poly) and the detailed mesh (higher poly).

As a game developer I'm looking for:

• Export low-poly triangle mesh (ideally OBJ or FBX format — something fairly generic, nothing too fancy) • Export texture map • Export normals • Bonus: export the scene as "de-structured" objects (e.g. instead of a giant world mesh with everything baked into it, separate exports for foreground and background objects to make it more game engine-ready.

Gaussian splats are awesome, but not critical for my current renderers. Cool to have though.

jtfrench··on Marble: A Multimodal World Model
From what I can tell, you can actually export a mesh in (paid) Marble, whereas I haven't seen mesh exports offered in Genie 3 yet (could be wrong though).
jtfrench··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (Nov 2025)
This sounds interesting and practical. Where can we follow your project?
jtfrench··on Apple Vision Pro upgraded with M5 chip
What kind of apps are you developing for Vision Pro? Any immersive space stuff?
jtfrench··on Microsoft CTO says he wants to swap most AMD and Nvidia GPUs for homemade chips
"Microsoft Silicon", coming up.

Is it practical for them to buy an existing chip maker? Or would they just go home-grown?

- As of today, Nvidia's market cap is a whopping 4.51 trillion USD compared to Microsoft's 3.85 trillion USD, so that might not work.

- AMD's market cap is 266.49 billion USD, which is more in reach.

jtfrench··on Irrlicht Engine – a cross-platform realtime 3D engine
I thought you died alone. A long, long time ago.
jtfrench··on OpenAI Grove
Highly likely.
jtfrench··on OpenAI Grove
The country selection menu seems to include countries from around the world. It sounds like only the first and last weeks are actually on-site, the rest in async/remote.
jtfrench··on OpenAI Grove
Same
jtfrench··on OpenAI Grove
Yeah, clicking "Submit" doesn't do anything obvious, aside from post some arcane errors to the JavaScript Console.
jtfrench··on What Is the Fourier Transform?
One of my favorites.
jtfrench··on Google has eliminated 35% of managers overseeing small teams in past year
Yeah, that helps put this in perspective. At first the headline sounded like a somewhat jarring and sudden staff cut, but if we're essentially just seeing Google migrate TLMs to TLs, that actually makes sense.
jtfrench··on Turning an iPad Pro into the Ultimate Classic Macintosh (2021)
"But can it run KidPix?"
jtfrench··on GPTs and Feeling Left Behind
I think the issue is ChatGPT. I find it to be the worst for writing shippable code beyond a single function. It plays too many mind games. If I’m trying to get any non-trivial amount of code done, it’s Gemini Pro 2.5 all the way.
