jtdev··on The Teamsters announce coordinated nationwide project to unionize Amazon
What you describe is a fallacy... it's more like: "I'm a heavy machinery operator, not a welder; if you need a weld, you'll need to requisition a welder."
jtdev··on The Teamsters announce coordinated nationwide project to unionize Amazon
> "corruption, bullying, and drive to have everyone do as little as possible" <-- this exact same verbiage could be used to describe the current state of affairs sans unionization.

jtdev··on Brave Search beta
Well I'd be interested in hearing how Brave search was able to surface results faster than Google yesterday... YouTube (another Alphabet echo chamber) was/is also removing video of the ambulance incident, so it was definitely on the big tech thought police radar.
jtdev··on Brave Search beta
Do you believe that Google doesn't engage in censoring search results? Do you know that YouTube was taking down the video of said incident yesterday and continues to do so today? https://www.breitbart.com/tech/2021/02/09/google-quietly-esc...
jtdev··on Brave Search beta
I’ve been using it. Seems like a solid search engine. Interestingly, Google appeared to be censoring results yesterday to hide reports about an unfortunate shooting at a Juneteenth event in Oakland and a subsequent situation where a crowd of people were blocking an ambulance from exiting the area of the shooting with wounded victims. Let’s just say the story didn’t play well to Google’s political base… so they hid it. Brave search provided unfiltered/uncensored results.
jtdev··on MPs: Octopuses feel pain and need legal protection
Define “intensive” in this context.

Do you realize that much of American beef cattle actually graze on natural grasses for most of their lives… in largely natural settings that support complex natural ecosystem? That will not be the case for “Beyond/Impossible/Soylent” burgers; they will be composed of plant proteins that require toxic monocultures to produce.

jtdev··on MPs: Octopuses feel pain and need legal protection
The primary ingredients in the fake meats being proselytized are plant proteins… meaning massive monocultures, pesticide and herbicide application, fertilizer application and manufacturing, and decimation of many thousands of acres of natural ecosystems. This doesn’t seem like a clear net positive change to me.
jtdev··on MPs: Octopuses feel pain and need legal protection
Okay, how do you feel about monocultures of soybean doused in glyphosate and multi-annual applications of synthetic fertilizers (which create radioactive leachate as a manufacturing byproduct)?
jtdev··on MPs: Octopuses feel pain and need legal protection
The farms that grow the inputs to your lab goo will have permits to shoot wild animals on these properties… it’s called a “block permit” and farmers in my area are known to kill so many deer through these permits that bulldozers are needed to handle the disposal/burial of the masses of animals they kill… and why do they do this? Because feeding humans is actually a rather important task.

Step off the concrete sometime… the solutions to the worlds problems and injustices are often far more complex and nuanced than what is proposed by the modern left.

jtdev··on The Elephant at WWDC
A good coder does not a good technical document writer make.
jtdev··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
con•spir•a•cy kən-spîr′ə-sē► n.

An agreement to perform together an illegal, wrongful, or subversive act.

Like, maybe the Fed is conspiring with the gov. and big banks to fleece the American people of their real estate assets…? Have you no ability to question things?

jtdev··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
Consider that you may be far too trusting if you’re not considering conspiracy as a possibility at this point…
jtdev··on We are publishing the tax secrets of the .001%
Twitter only does that when it facilitates manipulation of important elections. They’ve moved on to protecting Fauci, Harris, Biden from the harsh reality of their own incompetence and rapidly vanishing facade of legitimacy.
jtdev··on We are publishing the tax secrets of the .001%
Our political leaders and absolutely terrible media are the villains here… not the rich people protecting their wealth.
jtdev··on We are publishing the tax secrets of the .001%
It also encourages liquidity in the residential real estate market… which seems to be a net good thing.
jtdev··on Fastly Outage
Our fathers and mothers put man on the moon… we build shitty software that helps the technocrats sell more junk to the masses.
jtdev··on FoundationDB: A distributed, unbundled, transactional key value store [pdf]
I’d love to see a good primer on data models and scenarios that are well suited to FDB.
jtdev··on “AI promised to revolutionize radiology but so far its failing”
ML/AI is such an irresistible siren song for so many… the possibilities are seemingly endless. But the “sales and marketing” people are getting over their skis selling AI/ML to the point of smothering the tech. The next AI winter is going to be long and cold…
jtdev··on The Repeated Deaths of OOP (2015)
FP = debating largely academic nuances that have almost zero material effect on software deliverables, purely for ego driven reasons.
jtdev··on The Repeated Deaths of OOP (2015)
From the Swift docs regarding closures (I would have used Haskell doc reference, but the Haskell docs are so esoteric and vague as to be nearly useless):

“A closure can capture constants and variables from the surrounding context in which it’s defined. The closure can then refer to and modify the values of those constants and variables from within its body, even if the original scope that defined the constants and variables no longer exists.”

https://docs.swift.org/swift-book/LanguageGuide/Closures.htm...

jtdev··on The Repeated Deaths of OOP (2015)
Explain why closures are allowed to mutate state in this “simple, well understood” framework.
jtdev··on The Repeated Deaths of OOP (2015)
FP is a cult.
jtdev··on Why we should end the data economy
Uhhh, you can stop using said services and software that abuse privacy, e.g., Facebook, Google, Twitter, TicToc, etc.
jtdev··on Pesticides are killing the world's soils
My next door neighbors just had a pesticide treatment sprayed on the entire exterior of their house... including patio furniture, outdoor cooking area, the yard that their young children play in... this just one week after a neighborhood wide mosquito treatment (I opted out and asked for an MSDS from the application company).

I just don't understand people. I would rather see a spider/wasp/ant occasionally than be doused in pesticides.

jtdev··on Pesticides are killing the world's soils
Support your local CSA and sustainable agriculture.
jtdev··on Pesticides are killing the world's soils
I'm all for GMOs that allow reduction of pesticides and more sustainable ag practices in general... but that's not what we've seen happen.

Additionally, the IP issues raised when Monsanto's GMO plant pollen drifts onto my land making me subject to litigation due to infringement of Monsanto's IP... yeah, that's total bullshit.

jtdev··on Had Covid? You’ll probably make antibodies for a lifetime
> “They help fight off infection…”

Yeah, that’s what the immune system does.

jtdev··on Had Covid? You’ll probably make antibodies for a lifetime
Of those cases, I’ve seen zero reported as symptomatic. If you have any proof otherwise please link sources.
jtdev··on If the Lab-Leak Theory Is Right, What’s Next?
Ah yes, the phrasing tricks have been a media favorite when discussing covid origins… conflating lab origin with natural origin through the almost certainty that the viral material used at the WIV originated in nature is pure intellectual dishonesty.
