jtdev··on We deserve better than Confluence and Notion
I'd argue that there's far too much documentation for documentation sake... nobody wants to spend valuable time updating a document that nobody looks at.
jtdev··on We deserve better than Confluence and Notion
Given these points (and point #2 in particular), I'm certain that project management using Google Drive + Google Sheets + Google Docs (or whatever cloud based office tooling you prefer) would be far more productive and cost effective than what Atlassian is selling.
jtdev··on We deserve better than Confluence and Notion
I'm convinced that the only thing keeping people using Atlassian products is naive managers and antiquated IT/Ops staff who've learned that mentioning "Jira", "Confluence", etc. in the presence of their seniors results in some micro-fractional justification of their existence.

To paraphrase Thomas Sowell: "The least productive people are usually the ones who are most in favor of [using Atlassian products]".

jtdev··on Leaked grant proposal details high-risk coronavirus research
They don't "make everyone's chip's"... that would be Taiwan.

Regarding what should be done: stop giving money to China for GoF research would be a great start...

jtdev··on Backpage founders get mistrial because US overplayed child sex trafficking claim
The prosecution fought against a change of venue.
jtdev··on Backpage founders get mistrial because US overplayed child sex trafficking claim
Failure to grant a change of venue which resulted in intimidation of defenses expert witnesses (and subsequently impacted defenses ability to procure witnesses)... Disparaging the defense in the presence of the jury. Failure to sequester the jury throughout the trial. etc.
jtdev··on Why doesn’t natural immunity count in the US?
I think we can safely say that counting natural immunity would harm too many $$$ dollars and prevent politicians from maximizing the tragedy of C19 for political, power, and financial gain.
jtdev··on Intel is reducing server chip pricing in attempt to stem the AMD tide
Runtime costs are generally higher for comparable Intel CPUs due to electricity usage… so I would not expect any cost reduction passed on to consumers in the scenario you describe.
jtdev··on Rumble, an open source, offline, censorship resistant microblog (2017)
Are you suggesting that we implement something like a “social credit score”?
jtdev··on Mozilla VPN Completes Independent Security Audit by Cure53
No strong opinion, but I’m a bit skeptical.
jtdev··on Mozilla VPN Completes Independent Security Audit by Cure53
Can anyone articulate what actual and tangible security and/or privacy benefit this or any other consumer VPN provides?
jtdev··on We’re told to ‘follow the science’ – yet some of it is just plain wrong
It’s really a terrible thing for the cause of Science. Many politically motivated groups and individuals are currently using “Science” as a cudgel to beat the non-conformists into conformity and silence those who demand scientific rigor.
jtdev··on I switched from macOS to Linux after 15 years of Apple
Yah, Apple’s recent decision to pilfer my files has given me the final push to purchase a System76 Linux machine for my daily driver.
jtdev··on Tesseract.js – A Javascript port of the Tesseract OCR engine
Congrats! Why would one create such a project with JS given all of the languages available to them?
jtdev··on The humble egg is an example of what’s wrong with nutrition studies (2019)
You can find locally raised free range eggs in almost any city/town in the Americas... Egg alternatives are nutritionally inferior to real eggs.
jtdev··on Simple Systems Have Less Downtime (2020)
Technical employees who frequently act like firefighters (especially those that draw attention to themselves when doing so, i.e., the martyr types) are toxic and should be removed ASAP.
jtdev··on Official recommends rerun in Amazon union fight
The language used by Mr. Sellers is pure hyperbole and an attempt to dismiss due process in the name of "just trust us"...
jtdev··on Official recommends rerun in Amazon union fight
And Maricopa County, AZ should comply with the subpoenas issued by election auditors... unless they're hiding something. This isn't the way people with nothing to hide respond to subpoenas:

jtdev··on Apple Reportedly Storing over 8M Terabytes of iCloud Data on Google Servers
Right…?
jtdev··on Apple Reportedly Storing over 8M Terabytes of iCloud Data on Google Servers
So why does Google engage in automated reading of Gmail email contents?
jtdev··on Apple Reportedly Storing over 8M Terabytes of iCloud Data on Google Servers
Apple has built significant brand trust and brand loyalty on the premise that Apple’s business model is built around devices and services and that your data is not something that Apple is not interested in exploiting/monetizing; Google has a reputation for an antithetical business model in terms of user data.
jtdev··on Apple and Intel first to use TSMC 3nm
Be that as it may… the people of Hong Kong (and Taiwan) seem to be very emphatically (with few exceptions) communicating a distrust of and desire to be independent from China and the CCP.
jtdev··on Python Best Practices for a New Project in 2021
990 open issues… bugs going back to 2018 still open… https://github.com/python-poetry/poetry/issues

Please help me understand why I would want to lock specific versions of libraries in my Python projects. I’ve worked extensively with Python for a number of years and have never needed a lock file for my dependencies.

jtdev··on Python Best Practices for a New Project in 2021
venv + requirements.txt is simple and works. Why are people so obsessed with replacing this simple toolset/process with poorly maintained tools like Poetry/PyEnv?
jtdev··on Apple and Intel first to use TSMC 3nm
You speak with what seems to be the perspective of someone who has lived under authoritarian rule and doesn’t grasp that although “consent” may not always be explicit, it is in fact required for any state to maintain legitimacy.
jtdev··on Apple and Intel first to use TSMC 3nm
The Taiwanese people don’t seem to agree with your statement.
jtdev··on First Look: macOS Monterey Public Beta
> "Windows has been slowly improving"

... Are you referring to the Microsoft product Windows? If so, have you used Windows lately? I use it occasionally when required to work on .NET projects built on pre-.NET Core, and I can say unequivocally Windows is a dumpster fire of epic proportion in comparison to MacOS.

jtdev··on Toxoplasmosis: The Cat Poop Parasite That's Probably in Your Brain
Never trust a human who chooses to cohabitate with an animal that sprays who knows what on the furniture, shreds upholstery, and shits in a box that said human must manually clean…
jtdev··on Django for Startup Founders: A better software architecture for SaaS startups
At that point, why use Django at all? Flask seems to be a much better tool for building Python based REST APIs in my experience.
jtdev··on Django for Startup Founders: A better software architecture for SaaS startups
Yes, I also found the Django ORM to be absolutely horrendous. The need for using a serializer was also incredibly offputting and the default behavior of said serializers was almost always unhelpful and in fact caused more work than just crafting a JSON (or XML) object as I would do in Flask. Why some developers prefer these awful abstractions is beyond me.
