jsyang00··on Microsofts AI boss thinks its perfectly OK to steal content if its on open web
No he doesn't.

> I think that with respect to content that’s already on the open web, the social contract of that content since the ‘90s has been that it is fair use. Anyone can copy it, recreate with it, reproduce with it. That has been “freeware,” if you like, that’s been the understanding.

> There’s a separate category where a website, or a publisher, or a news organization had explicitly said ‘do not scrape or crawl me for any other reason than indexing me so that other people can find this content.’ That’s a grey area, and I think it’s going to work its way through the courts.

jsyang00··on The Functional Programming Hiring Problem
The author brings up some good points here, but I would just make sure to build my business around trading obscure financial instruments in a clever way, so as to generate such an overwhelming amount of profit that we can singlehandedly rewrite and maintain everything in our stack from scratch.

I acknowledge, however, a lot of people never think to do this when starting their business, and consequently run into all sorts of this kind of trouble, sadly.

jsyang00··on The Internet Archive is under a DDoS attack
Cloudflare is not "an extortionist firm". It is a large tech company, where occasionally teams employ shitty sales tactics to meet their numbers, but generally provides a valuable service and acts reasonably ethically.

There are open source tools to mitigate DDoS, but all of them will have some marginal cost to run, and they will all be significantly worse than Cloudflare as they benefit from neither Cloudflare's data moat or scale.

jsyang00··on Amazon CEO Andy jassy broke federal labor law with anti-union remarks
and people wonder why all corporate comms come in the form of babblespeak...
jsyang00··on Ask HN: Is it the industry or is it me?
This is a hard way to go, unless you are really very confident in your skills.

OP, I would recommend trying to reach out directly for referrals on LinkedIn instead if you are not already. That will at least make it likely your resume will get looked at. It is correct that you have a visibility problem, not a skills one.

jsyang00··on How the New Grad Apocalypse Is Going to Shake Out
I feel like this tweet is basically how things already work? Most midsize SW businesses are primarily hiring experienced devs. I see only the big cos and small shops hiring people out of college (and in the later mostly likely there is someone you know) which seems like the same as in finance.
jsyang00··on OpenAI memory available for ChatGPT Plus users
I think they have some model for "stuff that sounds like context to be remembered" and then they are appending to the prompt
jsyang00··on A leadership crisis in the Nix community
The Anduril issue seems to have been the main catalyst for the drama. Seems like Anduril probably did more harm then good - who at Anduril couldn't have predicted that the Nix folks would start to have a major freakout the minute they attempted to sponsor?
jsyang00··on Huawei's latest flagship smartphone contains no world-shaking silicon surprises
definitely yes, lol
jsyang00··on Rents Are the Fed's 'Biggest Stumbling Block' in Taming US Inflation
Most housing market intervention is at the local level (where there needs to be much less). Federal government has several levers through which they can subsidize supply creation which they should use. At the local level people wll have to fight one by one to get things built
jsyang00··on The IRS's new tax software: Rave reviews, but low turnout
I would be interested to see a comparison of people using TurboTax v. the IRS software. With TurboTax you pay a B.S premium up front, but at least you know they have some incentive to find refunds for you as much as is possible
jsyang00··on Amazon owes $525M in cloud-storage patent fight, US jury says
Seems like they are patent trolling to me. Hope Amazon wins the appeal. Nightmare for their corporate counsel to have to walk a jury through this and just hope for the best
jsyang00··on AI is not your friend
No, you author of "Transform: A rebel’s guide for digital transformation", must be.
jsyang00··on Wandb/openui: describe UI using your imagination
too verbose probably, factoring in tokens cost
jsyang00··on Robotic police dog shot, credited with averting bloodshed
I am not sure robots being tasked with intervening in situations with potentially violent persons is such a bad thing. a robot does not need to fear loss of life, it seems like this will be a good thing for discouraging the use of deadly force
jsyang00··on Ask HN: How common is developer burnout? Have you ever been burnt out?
I think burnout, to some extent, is the norm for most people working a 9-5(+).

I think most SWEs that don't get burnout either have an extreme passion for the work such that they don't mind thinking about it 24/7 or opt to go into lower pressure jobs. There are a lot of people finding ways to have lower pressure work at the FAANG level firms as well, although that is harder with the current market crunch for tech.

Many people are willing to grind it out for a couple decades, and some people working FAANG type jobs have been able to build generation wealth doing it, so that's a tradeoff they made.

I think you just have to go into it clearheaded about what you want, and avoiding getting sucked into situations where you're not optimizing properly for anything (i.e working 60 hr weeks for a mid-sized company that doesn't pay that well).

jsyang00··on California Income-based electric bills
pretty much nothing the rotten state of California does should constitute a surprise to anyone anymore
jsyang00··on Show HN: magick.css – Minimalist CSS for Wizards
I wish there were more of the minimalist CSS frameworks with opinionated styling. Easy to find very nice generic ones, but harder if you want one with some flavor.
jsyang00··on Ask HN: What companies currently have 4 day work weeks?
Stata I think?
jsyang00··on HP wants you to pay up to $36/month to rent a printer that it monitors
This is just silly. You're supposed to sell SOFTWARE for a monthly fee, without which the printer is inoperable.
jsyang00··on Capital One to buy Discover Financial in $35B stock deal
any of these would result in deal going through
jsyang00··on Capital One to buy Discover Financial in $35B stock deal
basically deal goes thru is p(republican admin takes over) + p(win in court) + p(settlement deal of some sort).
jsyang00··on Spotify's layoffs put an end to Every Noise at Once
When you are hiring like crazy and the stock goes up, you keep hiring. When you are firing like crazy and the stock goes up, well...
jsyang00··on Cyclist hit by driverless Waymo car in San Francisco, police say
> What I hope Waymo learbx for this, as well applies as similar scenarios: never cross through these zones of high bike traffic when the obstruction from another vehicle prevents a wide enough view to brake before this zone.

This might be fair, but at some point, if you are applying this consistent level of caution, there isn't going to be anywhere in the real world left to actually drive

jsyang00··on Remote work won, don't let anyone gaslight you to believe otherwise
Great. Guess my manager is just trying to get one over on me. Let me stay home and see how it goes.
jsyang00··on A Leaked Memo from Google CEO Sundar Pichai Comes Amidst Employee Discontent
that will be $200 million please :)
jsyang00··on Hindenburg Research: Forensic Financial Research
not unless they divulge material info I think, it is common for buy-side to talk to mgmt
jsyang00··on Gen Z struggles with job interviews. Can we blame them?
> One in five employers reported that recent college graduates come underprepared. Issues with making eye contact, dressing for the job, and asking for unrealistic salaries topped the list of complaints.

lol

jsyang00··on Judge blocks JetBlue from acquiring Spirit Airlines
This is a bad ruling, Spirit is likely to go under without acquisition. Neither firm had particularly large share of market.
jsyang00··on US developers can offer non-app store purchasing, Apple still collect commission
Why not just force apps to collect payment through a money order sent on the 2nd Thursday of each month between 1 and 2pm. Sounds about as compelling.
