jswizzy··on Debunking the Java Performance Myth
Yep, Elixir mostly just changed the syntax to something more C like instead of ant turds. Erlang is a beautiful design but the prolog syntax never really caught on.
jswizzy··on Dear Silicon Valley: America’s fallen out of love with you
This author is drinking some serious anti captalist kool-aid. First off both Bannon and Bernie are Leninists. True believers are interchangeable with one another if you believe Eric Hoffer.
jswizzy··on Uncle Bob and Silver Bullets
I'm still going to read the hell out of all of Uncle Bob's books. Every programmer has his faults and Programming is more of an art than science at this time in history.
jswizzy··on PlainJS – Vanilla JavaScript Repository
The real problem is JQuery isn't modular and it is tightly coupled with your code.
jswizzy··on In Search Of The Red Cross' $500M In Haiti Relief (2015)
This is why I give to religious charities
jswizzy··on Project Jigsaw: Complete
It's really good for encapsulation and you can do services without dependency injection frameworks
jswizzy··on Is Tribalism a Natural Malfunction? What computers teach us about getting along
Anyone who has watched a nature documentary knows that tribalism is essential for an organism longterm survival. Humans are just imaginative enough to want to transcend nature and reality.

To quote Cormac McCarthy, "There's no such thing as life without bloodshed. I think the notion that the species can be improved in some way, that everyone could live in harmony, is a really dangerous idea. Those who are afflicted with this notion are the first ones to give up their souls, their freedom. Your desire that it be that way will enslave you and make your life vacuous."

jswizzy··on Kotlin vs. Scala
I think OO when done right looks very much like FP. The problem is that OOP is just as hard as FP to write since most languages that claim to be OO languages are actually heavily procedural in nature.
jswizzy··on Our Approach to Privacy
Yep as someone who is in a cybersecurity job, it's almost trivial to hack Android.
jswizzy··on Decentralized Social Networks Won't Work
Just about everyone I know on Facebook would jump ship if they could. Not a day goes by that I don't notice someone complaining or leaving over anger at Google and Facebook supporting invading their privacy, promoting extremist politics, and censorship of conservative and liberal ideas.
jswizzy··on If Mark Zuckerberg runs for president, will Facebook help him win?
I would vote for Trump to prevent Sanders or Zuckerberg from being President. As far as I'm concerned the Democratic party died sometime during Obama's second term when they decided that they didn't need working class people anymore.
jswizzy··on Moving Java Forward Faster
FP and OOP are compatible styles. In fact, I would argue that FP is more object orientated than procedural code such as loops.
jswizzy··on Interviews on Skype: Test candidates using a real-time code editor over Skype.
It's definitely a skill that doesn't translate to actual development. Before I was a programmer I was a Navy nuclear power plant operator and they did boards like that. In that situation, it made sense because you needed to be able to remember causality procedures during an emergency. Coding, on the other hand, doesn't have that requirement often if at all.
jswizzy··on Iodine: A full superset of Java with enhancements
You can even use it for Android and IOS development if you use Flutter which is basically Java swing meets ReactJS but written in Dart which is what Java syntax would look like if it was created today.
jswizzy··on Interview with Ryan Dahl, Creator of Node.js
Any language that uses the actor model for concurrency which is basically every language created in the last decade. Elixir, GO, Akka framework for Java and C#, Pony, Dart, Erlang, ELM, SCALA, ...
jswizzy··on Small Functions considered Harmful
The main point of small functions is they tend to be more readable. If they are too small then you get into code golf territory and loss readability. It's a balancing act, you need to follow the Goldilocks principle when writing algorithms. Also, the author states at the end that small functions aren't bad so the title is misleading.
jswizzy··on Flutter – A mobile app SDK for iOS and Android
thanks
jswizzy··on Flutter – A mobile app SDK for iOS and Android
I haven't done enough with Flutter to really report on it but I like it better than React and Android's API so far. I do feel comfortable enough with Dart to say that it is very familiar and easy to pick up. It's Java syntax mostly with modern features and much less boilerplate code. The concurrency model is the same one you find in distributed languages like Erlang, Golang, and Akka Java or Scala. The bad parts of Dart have nothing to do with the language. Oh, and functions are first-class citizens which is my biggest gripe with Java.
jswizzy··on Why Go is my favorite programming language
Can testify that other people do limit the tools you can use. I was on a project that I couldn't use even use interfaces, streams, classes, or generics because the other programmer was incapable of understanding how they worked. I eventually just switched to a tool that did the work we were working on to solve the problem without programming because that guy despite having a masters degree in CS and ton of certifications was incapable of understanding anything remotely outside of procedural programming.
jswizzy··on How big oil will die
You think in 2025 we will be talking about children mining by hand in the Congo in horrible conditions to provide all those lithium batteries for that future? There is a price for everything.
jswizzy··on Swift 5: start your engines
I concur. The Android SDK seems to violate SOLID principles and fails to capitalize on OOP at all.
