jsmith99··on How we had our Nectar Points stolen, and this is how yours will be too
Good point. Although I should point out the vouchers would be for their benefit not mine - the whole point of supermarket tracking is to entice you into discovering some high margin item you will end up loving. So their motivation to track is reduced.
jsmith99··on How we had our Nectar Points stolen, and this is how yours will be too
Nectar is especially bad here. I signed up because Sainsbury’s have ‘special’ prices for nectar card users on many items (presumably they increase the price and then reduce it back down for cardholders). But there was no way to opt out of marketing and tracking.

By contrast when I signed up for Tesco clubcard, even pre gdpr, I was easily able to opt out of tracking. I don’t get targeted vouchers, or any discount coupons, but I still get points and clubcard prices.

jsmith99··on Indexing iCloud Photos with AI Using LLaVA and Pgvector
I’ve just tried that and it’s true although on my instance searching ‘airplane’ gives good results. I wonder if it’s due to an insufficient number of images in the demo? I also took the advice in the forums to tweak the exact model version used.
jsmith99··on Indexing iCloud Photos with AI Using LLaVA and Pgvector
Immich (self hosted Google photos alternative) has been using CLIP models for smart search for a while and anecdotally seems to work really well - it indexes fast and results are of similar quality to the giant SaaS providers.

Fortunately Kraft were later bought by 3G, a fund notorious for zero based budgeting, meaning instead of rolling forward budgets you start from zero every year and have to defend every item.

jsmith99··on Nothing Chats, an iMessage app for Android, is a privacy nightmare
It’s no different. But Beeper at least makes that clear, including this warning call out, with caution signs, in the FAQ:

> Using native chat apps independently may be more secure than connecting to other encrypted chat networks with Beeper.

jsmith99··on Web designers should get good training in typography (2006)
That’s not even the biggest advantage of styles - they have a semantic meaning. Eg headings show up in Word’s navigation pane or auto generated table of contents; or if you convert a word document into an epub using calibre and you used styles correctly then eg each top level heading will be a new chapter.
jsmith99··on Sony announces a9 III: first full-frame global shutter camera
There are pocketable FF camera with prime lenses and pocketable 1” sensor cameras with zooms. Those old 35mm film pocketable zooms had terrible apertures but a RX100M3 with a 1.8-2.8 aperture has a comparable effective aperture to some FF mirrorless with kit lens.
jsmith99··on Sony announces a9 III: first full-frame global shutter camera
It only works for things where the key is stored on the chip or phones where the key is stored in a TPM or equivalent and relies on a PIN to release it, as opposed to typical use of encryption where the full key is entered to unlock. An attacker with physical access can probe the chip but it’s risky - one slip and it’s gone for ever. This technique is most useful when all chips of this type have the same key so you only need to successfully crack one, any one. Ross Anderson’s book Security Engineering uses the example of Sky Pay TV cards https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/Papers/SEv2-c16.pdf
jsmith99··on Sony announces a9 III: first full-frame global shutter camera
Assuming they use different embedded keys per camera (which is unfortunately unlikely) instead of the same key on every chip, this can be defeated by demanding to see the intact camera before accepting the signature. Ion beam assisted probing is a destructive process.
jsmith99··on Why Did People Comply?
This completely misses the point. Lockdown wasn’t a top down imposition. Boris and his advisors were extremely sceptical of lockdown and initially refused it. They only imposed it after polls showed the public were hugely in favour of a more robust response. In fact a terrifying number wanted a permanent curfew.

There are plenty of polls from the time eg https://www.ipsos.com/en-uk/one-month-british-public-opinion... which shows a majority supporting universal phone tracking etc and thinking government were moving too slowly.

jsmith99··on Seriously Consider Skipping the Drinks (2022)
Monks beer was generally very weak. The modern Belgian Trappist brands you may be thinking of that are almost 10% alcohol aren’t actually drunk by monks - they were invented in the 20th century as a commercial opportunity when Belgium banned spirits in bars.
jsmith99··on Android 14 adds support for using your smartphone as a webcam
Orion is nice but it works by using Safari’s extensions API under the hood. Safari does have a fairly thorough extensions API even on mobile but it’s missing things like webRequest. This is particularly a problem for the Bypass Paywalls extension because you can’t change things like referer. It’s the biggest thing I miss from android.
jsmith99··on Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2023 winners
The hobby is surprisingly accessible. Most of these images were made with specialised equipment but the milky way landscapes could be created with practically any modern interchangeable lens camera (or some compacts) and a fast lens (and a very dark location!). https://www.lonelyspeck.com/ has some good guides.

There are some excellent open source programs to reduce noise in the images by stacking multiple exposures and some ingenious algorithms.

jsmith99··on Reasons to not use your own domain for email
I own <initial><last name>.com and <first name><last name>.com and I'm paying for Fastmail, but I hesitate to give these addresses out widely. I can see many benefits to domain email but I don't want people to think this is just a vanity address, especially as I don't work in IT or have a business or website. I'm an accountant (not public facing) and I think my <initial><last name>@<well-known provider> actually looks more professional on my CV (although I wouldn't use it for actual work - I have my address at my employer for that).
jsmith99··on To make dishwashers great again? (2020)
Many European machines accept hot water. Any Miele does, and my entry level Bosch (in UK) accepts up to 60C but you have to set some obscure setting on the machine (the manual explains). But I find even cheap machines wash pretty well even without this, and you are right about it it being hot only if the machine is right next to the boiler.
jsmith99··on Discovery shines light on Church's protection of Jews during Nazi persecution
I wonder how this interplays with https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_orphans_controversy (church institutions refused to return children they sheltered to their parents post war because the church had baptised them).
jsmith99··on Mullvad on Tailscale: Privately browse the web
VPNs of the Mullvad type (not them specifically): Mostly marketing to the ignorant, but also people in police states and people who are getting annoying letters about their torrenting.

VPNs of the Tailscale type: Mostly people who self host apps and want them to be available across their devices without opening them up to the internet, or be able to access their NAS from Starbucks.

jsmith99··on Councils in England in crisis as Birmingham ‘declares itself bankrupt’
Even as an accountant it is very hard to understand local authority accounts. They are usually three years late and poorly presented. Also most of their spend is either recharged to central government or mandatory; discretionary spend is a very small part of the budget.

By contrast, central government accounts in the UK are excellent.
