jscipione··on The 'attention economy' corrupts science
I disagree with the premise of the article, interconnectedness is a great benefit to science. Yes there are inequities, but that also means more collaboration, and more scrutiny. Science is deeply corrupt but for other reasons such as a lot of money in certain areas of interest, pressure from governments and ivory tower mentality.
jscipione··on The 'attention economy' corrupts science
It is true in the field of computer science at least where the market has destroyed the academic sphere in terms of innovation by building better products.
jscipione··on Apple’s ad business set to boom on the back of its own anti-tracking crackdown
Better Apple make money off data than it being collected by Facebook and sent to the FBI.

At least Apple has a record of keeping their users safe from government.

jscipione··on The First RISC: John Cocke and the IBM 801
Tangentially related to article, what happened to the riscv beagle board, is that still going to be available for purchase?
jscipione··on Mandated diversity statement drives Jonathan Haidt to quit academic society
Jordan Peterson also recently retired from the University of Toronto citing diversity statements as his reason.

I would source a publication more well-received by the Hacker News moderators, but I couldn’t find any stories published by those sources. This reporting bias seems to be more and more common unfortunately.

jscipione··on Paris Will Become ‘100% Cyclable’
Is Paris safe enough to cycle in? I’d rather drive so that I might survive the journey.

The “infrastructure bill” Democrats passed already mandates breathalyzers in all cars by 2026.

jscipione··on 'Extremely rare' Rameses II-era burial cave found in Israel
This is an interesting find because it is contemporaneous with The Merneptah Stele [0] that declared “Israel is wasted, its seed is not” in 1208 BC. This find confirms that ancient Egyptians were present in the Holy Land at that time. Although Merneptah’s claim may not have been entirely accurate with regards to the success of his mission in Canaan.

jscipione··on 60-80% of Tweeters posting on Russia-Ukraine war are bots, 90% pro Ukraine
Too many bots was the stated reason that Elon Musk used to decide not to go through with his purchase of Twitter. Hopefully Twitter will take a massive stock dive with this news allowing Musk to buy the company for a much cheaper price. Otherwise there will be two platforms, Twitter for leftists and bots, and Truth Social for conservatives. If Twitter is not reformed then the two bubbles will no longer interact bifurcating the audiences stifling debate. Perhaps that is inevitable anyway as Democrats and Republicans no longer wish to have dialogue as evidenced by Katie Hobbs and John Fetterman refusing to debate.
jscipione··on US border forces are seizing Americans' phone data and storing it for 15 years
MTG successfully argued in court that since 1776 is emblazoned over the threshold of the court, that references to the American Revolution are built into our judicial system.

jscipione··on Facebook bans Holocaust film for violating race policy
"No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider" (47 U.S.C. § 230)
jscipione··on Facebook bans Holocaust film for violating race policy
Publishers are liable for any libel they publish while platforms are not, that’s the legal distinction. When Facebook chooses to editorialize their content like they did in this instance they forfeit the legal protections of the Communications Decency Act. The first Amendment limits the power of the federal government to provide liability protection for publishers.
jscipione··on I wish I was a little bit taller
A 1964 Chevrolet Impala is an impressive automobile that may persuade potential mates to overlook ones height deficiency.
jscipione··on I wish I was a little bit taller
“I wish I had a rabbit in a hat with a bat and a six-four Impala.”
jscipione··on Weed Became the New OxyContin
Green is widely used as a pain treatment by NFL players despite the fact that it is prohibited and thus under the radar. Meanwhile OxyContin is regularly prescribed to treat pain yet it is disliked by at a least a few vocal NFL athletes.
jscipione··on The Problem with Intelligence
IQ tests test pattern recognition which is a proxy for intelligence. All possibility of racial and cultural bias has been removed by limiting test questions to geometric patterns that have no cultural significance.
jscipione··on The last person standing in the floppy disk business
No, I’m not old enough to remember 8” floppies but I watched Adrian’s Digital Basement’s repair of the TRS model-2 including restoring the 8” floppy drive, connecting it to 24V, using a adapter to hook it up to a PC to make a boot disk. [0] Unfortunately once Adrian got the Model-2 working and booted to TRS DOS he didn’t test any other software on the machine. My experience with Tandy machines was playing Burger Time off a cartridge as a kid, no 8” floppies.

jscipione··on Who cares about diversity?
Diversity and equity are Neo-Marxism.
jscipione··on Intel says one of its 13th Gen CPUs will hit 6GHz out of the box
AMD announces 5.7ghz Ryzen 9 7950X chip retailing for $699 this month, meanwhile Intel hints at vapor chip that theoretically might hit 6ghz with no release date and no price. This stinks of desperation on Intel’s part.
jscipione··on Europe's Newest Nuclear Reactor Eases Finland's Power Problems
Most of Europe will be in a state of open rebellion in a few months when there is no more energy to heat their homes and no more food to feed their family. This is due to the failure of European leaders to create policies of energy independence. Protests have already begun all over the continent. Finland’s nuclear reactor is too little to late to save Europe from total war.
jscipione··on Cognitive ability is related to supporting freedom of speech (2020)
None of that clears the FBI and others of wrongdoing, and more importantly none of it refutes my main thesis that freedom of speech and freedom of the press are essential to a functioning Democracy.
jscipione··on Is the psychedelic therapy bubble about to burst?
The SNRI therapy bubble has already burst, now druggists are looking for alternatives. The tragic part is that psychologists have been prescribing mind-altering drugs for years that didn't treat depression. What makes psychedelics any different?
jscipione··on Science is political, and that's a bad thing
Science, like all institutions of the West, has been turned against its own population and is working to destroy them and all of Western Civilization because that's what the people who are paying for science want.
jscipione··on Japan declares war on floppy disks for government use
The US Department of Defense moved away from using 8" floppy disks for its nuclear missile command in 2019. They were replaced by a "highly secure solid state digital storage solution" [0] which sounds like code for a floppy to SD card adapter.

jscipione··on Intel enters a new era of chiplets
Intel is way behind, but at least they know it and are doing something about it. They just need to ship more 10nm processors to float them for a while so they can develop chiplets.
jscipione··on OpenCore Legacy Patcher
OpenCore is a God-send for old Mac Pros which can even run Monterrey with some hardware and driver changes.
jscipione··on Why Xen Wasn't Hit by RETBleed on Intel CPUs
I understand why in a data center hosting VMs speculative execution would be impractical, yet on my personal computer speculative execution gives a nice performance boost copying small files.
