jryan49··on AI poster wins Ohio State Fair contest
It's sad because the ai one is at least one of the worse of the set...
jryan49··on 2x, not 10x: coding with LLMs in 2026
All these hot takes that LLMs are -10x, 100x, 2x are kind of silly. It really depends on:

What you are using it for? What language, what framework, how many LOC, what domain, how much docs can the LLM read, etc etc.

What are you optimizing for? Cost? Human knowing how your code works? Getting something out the door?

How Good You Are at Prompting the LLM for THAT specific set of parameters?

I find AI can save me like 5x time on something, and in other cases it's wasted 5x time. Overtime I'm hopefully learning how to use it better.

jryan49··on GCC steering committee announces AI policy
It was a frontier model from a few months ago. It hasn't done it recently. But it has happened. I imagine if there isn't a lot of training data for an idea it probably has a higher change of generating verbatim, so as time goes on, it should become less of a problem (at least with high quality models).
jryan49··on GCC steering committee announces AI policy
I mean ai has generated copyright headers verbatim in code I asked it to make. I had a tutorial open from the web and asked the AI to generate an example for me and it was the example from the tutorial verbatim as well...
jryan49··on Ask HN: Stop Looking at Code?
AI makes mistakes like humans. We used to review human's code because humans make mistakes. What the hell has changed? I mean it's pretty effective to have another agent review the code too, but I still find it doesn't catch all of the things I do. Also don't tell me the tests you didn't even read will make sure it all works :)
jryan49··on Ask HN: Do you say please and thank you to your LLMs?
Since every token costs money and I dont think they are conscious, never.
jryan49··on Decoy Font
Squinting is surprisingly effective for me for seeing the hidden text. That's really cool!
jryan49··on S&P Global has lowered Oracle’s creditworthiness from BBB to BBB-
Stocks are long term investments, 10yr+ So you should expect the possibility of a sideways market.
jryan49··on John Deere owners will get the right to repair equipment under FTC settlement
A tractor is not exactly bleeding edge technology...
jryan49··on AI coding is a nightmare. Am I the only one experiencing this?
Use a better model like Opus.
jryan49··on Ask HN: Why are so many "AI evangelists" posting such insufferable content?
Then why are you reading LinkedIn...
jryan49··on Ask HN: Am I the only who misses Nights and Weekends?
What is it?
jryan49··on Ask HN: Do you thank your agents when they did a good job?
Rather not waste tokens. Saying thank you literally costs you money.
jryan49··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
So they can train on everyone's copyrighted works to create their model, but when someone trains a model off their model it's not okay? Seems kind of hypocritical.
jryan49··on Ask HN: Do we even need code anymore?
I would think modern optimized binaries would be too complicated for current LLMs to handle. LLMs currently get overwhelmed with large code bases, imagine turning that all into binary.
jryan49··on The founder of Craigslist has given away half a billion dollars
I mean is your place modest compared to the average place in a third world country?
jryan49··on Ask HN: Do we even need code anymore?
If you're made of money sure and then the cases it can't fix I guess you're just stuck.
jryan49··on Ask HN: Do we even need code anymore?
Can AI actually read binary code and change it?
jryan49··on Ask HN: Is there a metric for AI code quality?
What about AI changes things though? Why didn't you just ignore code quality from humans writing code too?
jryan49··on Artificial intelligence is not conscious – Ted Chiang
Honestly? I don't think we really understand consciousness. So it's kind of hard to say something is or isn't conscious.
jryan49··on Meta workers can opt out of being tracked at work up to 30 min
Could anything be more ironic, the employees that work to track every person in the world are now being tracked themselves :)
jryan49··on Meta workers can opt out of being tracked at work up to 30 min
I've been thinking about it a lot. I've been looking into becoming an electrician for maybe like 6 years before I retire.
jryan49··on Claude Opus 4.8
Kinda buggy, but impressively nonetheless. How long did it take?
jryan49··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
But it was trained on ad spam wasn't it?
jryan49··on An OpenAI model has disproved a central conjecture in discrete geometry
People are afraid for their livelihood. What do you expect?
jryan49··on Ask HN: Go all in on startup idea, or stay W2
I mean a lot depends on your life circumstances. Do you have a family to support? Do you have any money saved up? How old you are? It's tempting for me to quit and work on something I've wanted to work on for years but... The risk feels too high cause I feel like if I fail, it will be impossible to find a new job where either I made as much as I had before, or a job at all.
jryan49··on Zuckerberg 'Personally Authorized and Encouraged' Meta's Copyright Infringement
I mean the act of reproducing the copyrighted material is what is illegal. LLMs I've used for coding has outputted exact copyrights for code verbatim into my code before. When that happens it feels kind of fishy to be honest.
jryan49··on Zuckerberg 'Personally Authorized and Encouraged' Meta's Copyright Infringement
I had to buy the copyrighted material before reading it... Meta apparently operates in a different legal system than me. That's my issue with it.
jryan49··on I Forgot to Code
> I went all in on AI coding tools and became incredibly productive. Then I lost my job and could not write a for loop.

After I read that, I couldn't even bring myself to read the article.

jryan49··on Deezer says 44% of songs uploaded to its platform daily are AI-generated
It's really good!
