jrepinc··on Microsoft seemingly just revealed that OpenAI lost $11.5B last quarter
They should be loosing even more. This damaging corporate closed "AI" hype bubblr must bust before it does even more harm it is already doing to society
jrepinc··on You can't turn off Copilot in the web versions of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint
That's why I switched to LibreOffice, no "AI" crap and full local and respecting privacy. https://www.libreoffice.org/
jrepinc··on KDE is now my favorite desktop
Absolutely my favourite too. KDE Plasma is the best all around desktop environment. Very flexible and customizable so you can tune it to emulate any other desktop environment, or just make it into something completely of your own. Also packed with features and nice little thoughtful things no other desktop has. Absolutely love the powerful window management features (although i still miss some tiling features and I miss tabbed windows ala BeOS). Activities features to separate environment for work [projects] and home is also nice and would love to see it extended and supported in more applications. Despite all these powerful features and configurability it is still one of the most light-weight desktop environments, very efficient. And the KDE community is also one of the most if not the most friendly I have encountered. Great job and thanks to all.

Yeah sure I have to support them, but I had to do the same when they were still on Windows. With them using GNU/Linux now I have to support them far less, and far less often and I can more easily do it remotely. Linux just runs more stable and is more resilient to breakage. So even here it is not just better for the family/friends, it is also better with GNU/Linux for me as I have to spend less time on offering support.

jrepinc··on Windows Was the Problem All Along [video]
Always has been, even years ago. These days it is a huge problem. More of a bloated spyware, adware than an OS.

jrepinc··on Microsoft is about to launch Recall for real this time
More and more spyware and idiotic "AI", bleh. Glad I switched to GNU/Linux and other libre/free and opensource software years ago.
jrepinc··on Carmack defends AI tools after Quake fan calls Microsoft AI demo "disgusting"
> Software is noticeably getting worse every year

Yeah corporate for-profit software sure does. With libre/free and opensource software the trend is the opposite and it actually is getting better as time goes by. I notice this especially comparing all the GNU/Linux computers I have at home with Windows/macOS computers we have to use at work.

jrepinc··on M365 Family users wake up to notice 'Your subscription expired'
Exactly and to use free/libre and opensource software like LibreOffice
jrepinc··on China's BGI Genomics loses access to Microsoft's office software
And that is why it is best to use completely offline, local, free/libre and opensource software. The only way you can really control it and use it as you want. Int this case something like LibreOffice or if online version is needed something Collabora.

jrepinc··on E.U. Prepares Major Penalties Against X
Good, it is a start. And much better would be for those EU politicians, journalists and other people to move to Mastodon, Pixelfed, and similar independent platforms. That would make a much better example.
jrepinc··on France suggests targeting Big Tech's data use in response to US tariffs
Yes please, long overdue. And use the collected money to fund free (as in freedom) and opensource software (and hardware) projects/communities.
jrepinc··on Europe needs its own social media platforms to safeguard sovereignty
We have Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Lemmy... Let us just use what already exists and is decentralised/federated, is free as in freedom and opensource, has no rich oligarch behind it and controlling it and so on. We nned nothing new just more people using existing stuff that is already much better.

jrepinc··on Throwback Thursday: KDE 2 on SUSE Linux 7.3
Nice blast from the past. It is incredible how much KDE Plasma has advanced during all these years. To the point that now Plasma 6 is the best desktop environment in the industry. Leaving even proprietary alternatives in the dust.
jrepinc··on Inside Meta’s Palestine Censorship [video]
And it looks like Hacker News/Y Combinator has the same disturbing problem as Meta and the rest of GAFAM/BigTech. Anything criticizing Israel or giving voice to Palestinians is quickly flagged and censored.
