jrcii··on NetBSD fully reproducible builds
Of all the great OSes, NetBSD seems to get the least fanfare but it's always been my favorite. It's fast, secure, and due to a well reasoned architecture it works on everything. pkgsrc is amazing. They also have a very helpful, friendly community. It especially warms my heart to run `ps -ax` on a new install and see all of about 10 processes. The OS feels lean, neat, and organized, and I feel like I know exactly what is going on, where to find a given file, etc.

These special strengths -- vast hardware compatibility, rump kernels, now full reproducible builds, are all enabled by a greater underlying (and seemingly underrated) technical excellence.

My solution to this is to have my servers' console plugged into a separate switch and LTE router than their ethernet cards so not only do I have a redundant WAN, but a redundant router and switch as well.

I've said for a long time that the problem digital currency proponents seem to be missing is that there is nothing intrinsic to the technology that prevents it from being regulated. A bill is already up in California that requires businesses to report anyone who uses it. The only reason it hasn't been heavily regulated is because it hasn't become big enough to be on the radar yet. The second it is, it will become like anything else.

It's funny I just learned what Freescale was 3 days ago. I wanted to integrate this system I'm designing with employee presence so I bought and rooted this time clock https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0155NL3MA Inside was a MicroSD card on an ARM board that contained a copy of "Freescale Linux"
jrcii··on Why Unicode Won’t Work on the Internet (2001)
Banned what account??? I've definitely never been banned. I don't know what the hell you're talking about. Interesting that it's fine with you that the parent's comment is yet another stab at forcing liberal politics down my throat and you have no problem with that, but if I object to it, then there's a problem. Typical liberal thought police fascism -- let's guess who you're voting for this election?

Let me make it simple for you -- if that's what's going on here at Hacker News that they've got you playing hall monitor using your rules as a tool to censor only the political speech you don't like, and that happens to be liberal, you AND this site can stick your thought control where the sun don't shine and delete my entire account for all I care. I can promise you that if it's going to be okay for liberals to insert THEIR politics into their comments then I'm going to feel free to continue firing back with mine and if you don't like it that's too bad.

jrcii··on Amazon’s Ambition to Compete Directly with UPS and FedEx
70% of my "one day" prime deliveries result in false delivery attempts -- due to either A1 International, Lasership, or "AMZN" couriers. Reporting these problems to customer service I've been told that they're aware of the problem, so it is definitely happening at some kind of scale.
jrcii··on Figma 1.0 – Collaborative interface design tool
Great work! This looks very sophisticated and polished. I hesitate to detract at all from their good work so I don't know why I'm even saying this, maybe just looking for commiseration, but in my career I've found that collaborating on any kind of design work is a guaranteed way to ruin it.

jrcii··on Using Gmail with Mutt
I've got Mutt going with Gmail along the lines of Steve Losh's advice http://stevelosh.com/blog/2012/10/the-homely-mutt/

It works great. Very fast, and it's nice to have a local backup of my email.

jrcii··on Distant languages have similar sounds for common words
There's a visceral gratification in the pronunciation "ginin taw nick" it rolls off the tongue, perhaps that is the root. My favorite word for this reason is pumpernickel.
jrcii··on I quit my job, bought an army truck, and spent 19 months circumnavigating Africa
As someone who spent a lot of time in Congo -- you also don't get the full picture from the media or even State Department statuses. In the example of Congo, the problem area is limited to a couple towns versus a country that's the size of Western Europe combined, and even there it's pretty infrequent. To go by what you read, the whole country is in constant chaos.
jrcii··on iTunes will never work well
Sure. There are a lot of streams available on shoutcast.com, just click the download icon and copy the URL, some stations list their stream URL on the site, just google the call letters + "m3u" or "pls" etc, then there is this site which is the best directory I've found so far radioroku.com. If you use iOS there's also a great app for playing these streams called fstream.

Here is my list:

I've grown very fond of a CLI media player named cmus. It's lightning fast and does everything I need with a simple interface http://matthieukeller.com/media/2015.01/2015.01.cmus.png

jrcii··on Municipal ISP forced to shut off fiber-to-the-home Internet after court ruling
If you're in Manhattan check out Stealth Communications. They're the only way to get gigabit for a decent price, they have a direct franchise agreement with the city and own the fiber lines.

For over 10 years I've written and maintained Excel automation that integrates with a web-based research database. Beyond not being supported by the EULA, Microsoft flat out says in its documentation do not do this COM is not designed for this purpose.

Gmail is free, would you be happy if they updated it and your email didn't work anymore? I love OpenBSD but they constantly change the rule syntax for pf, which invalidates huge swaths of forum posts and other online documentation, even published books. The man page doesn't contain every conceivable explanation and example for every scenario either, nor could it, so that is also not a solution. Whether or not the price is free, the use is not, as it requires hours of valuable time to implement.
jrcii··on OpenBSD 6.0 released
Yay! I get to spend 5 hours figuring out how to update the syntax for my pf.conf rules.
