jraby3··on EU Parliamentary Research Service calls VPNs "a loophole that needs closing"
Why? Isn't your age verified when you renew your drivers license? Purchase something on Amazon?

When I was a kid, child programming and commercials were heavily scrutinized. Now any kid can access porn, violence, and scams on the internet. That's a blight. Not age verification.

jraby3··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2026)
There is a separate thread on the first of every month titled who would like to be hired where you can post your resume.

This thread is for companies hiring.

Good luck!

jraby3··on The noise we make is hurting animals. Can we learn to shut up?
There will almost certainly be more pandemics and they'll probably be worse. The world is getting smaller, and what takes a super high end lab these days (in terms of virus creation) will be done by college students in 20 years.
jraby3··on Meta and YouTube found negligent in landmark social media addiction case
When I was a kid, tv commercials were heavily censored and the tv channel could and would be fined immediately if something inappropriate was shown.

How is it that these days social media can circumvent all these safeguards and then somehow blame the parents if a kid is watching something inappropriate on an app designed for kids (like YouTube kids)?

The issue is that politicians are beholden to social media companies because they can literally get them or their opponent elected. After reading Careless People, I was amazed at how leaders of so many countries wanted to meet Zuck because he wields so much power.

I really hope this ruling is the beginning of the end of the free rein they've had.

jraby3··on The happiest I've ever been
Similar for me. Happiest I've ever been was when I was an assistant guide for birthright Israel.

My job was to make sure the 40 kids that came were having a good time. When your job is to make others happy, you become happy.

jraby3··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
Aside from Israel are there any democracies in the Middle East?
jraby3··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
It's been shown time and time again that the world will eat up any propaganda against Israel without waiting to hear any facts at all.
jraby3··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
Compare how much Israel was in the news for targeting militants these past two years in Gaza.

How biased is the press? Iran slaughters 36k people in a week and... crickets. Israel refuses to let its hostages die while Hamas hides out in hospitals and schools and the world is against Israel not Iran.

jraby3··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
Not to mention all the numerous threats to wipe Israel off the map by Iran, Hez etc.

Let's not pretend Iran is innocent please. Or Hamas either.

jraby3··on A Nationwide Book Ban Bill Has Been Introduced in the House of Representatives
Teaching something at school is not the same as banning a book.
jraby3··on The Age Verification Trap: Verifying age undermines everyone's data protection
I used to be so against this but after the never ending cat and mouse game with my kids (especially my son) I don't think the tech crowd really appreciates how frustrating it is and how many different screens there are.

Tons of data also showing higher suicide rates, depression rates, eating disorders etc. so it's not as if there is no good side to this.

jraby3··on Data centers in space makes no sense
A few additional items to rebut the lack of info in this Article:

- SpaceX just requested a license to launch up to a million satellites.

- the satellites already have some incredible anti collision software, which I believe Elon has now open sourced.

- the cost to launch 1 kg to space has dropped by a factor of 10 in the past few years and is currently less than $1000. It's perfectly reasonable to estimate that over the next 10 years the cost could drop by another factor of 10, if not more, particularly if the heavy rockets are reusable.

jraby3··on Tesla’s autonomous vehicles are crashing at a rate much higher tha human drivers
Yes but they charge per mile, so the net change in price should be a substantial reduction.
jraby3··on Tesla’s autonomous vehicles are crashing at a rate much higher tha human drivers
The biggest indicator for me that this headline isn't accurate is that Lemonade insurance just reduced the rate for Tesla FSD by 50%. They probably have accurate data and decided that Tesla's are significantly safer than human drivers.
jraby3··on Tesla’s autonomous vehicles are crashing at a rate much higher tha human drivers
I find it interesting the Lemonade insurance just began offering a 50% discount for Tesla with FSD.

Insurance companies are known for analytics and don't survive if they use bad data. This points to your comment being correct.

jraby3··on Over 36,500 killed in Iran's deadliest massacre, documents reveal
Arguably what's happening in Iran is so much worse.

The majority of people killed in Gaza were terrorists while in Iran they are mostly peaceful protestors.

I think the main reason is that propaganda really works! Qatar has spent $20B on US education alone, and Qatar Russia and China have launched a massive propaganda campaign to divide the US. The left was silent on Sudan, Syria, and Nigeria as well.

No Jews no news.

jraby3··on Iran's internet blackout may become permanent, with access for elites only
It's because Qatar, Russia and China launched a multi billion dollar propaganda campaign targeting Israel. Israel is so divisive it's the perfect way to divide a population.

Lots of worse things have happened in the past two years (Sudan, Nigeria, and now Iran). No Jews no news.

jraby3··on Iran's internet blackout may become permanent, with access for elites only
Did you also see I was born in Baghdad and know first hand what actual ethnic cleansing is?

Qatar spent $20B on education alone in the US. China Russia and Qatar have collectively brainwashed millions of Americans and Europeans.

jraby3··on Iran's internet blackout may become permanent, with access for elites only
It's not just press. The actions of the world are to let Iran continue doing what it wants to its people and not interfere.

The reason isn't that no one disagrees, it's that Qatar, Russia and China don't think the issue is divisive and have not launched a multi billion dollar propaganda campaign about it. And the actual press couldn't care less if Israel isn't involved.

jraby3··on Iran's internet blackout may become permanent, with access for elites only
I don't think anyone really believes civilian deaths shouldn't be condemned. I think the main source of argument is who gets the blame. Hamas could've returned the hostages at any time, but they got rewarded by foreign money (and immensely successful anti Israel propaganda campaign by Qatar, Russia and China) to keep going.

The only real way to peace for gazans is to have a non Islamist government take over (like from the UAE) and re educate the population to not start training their children for intifada at the age of 3 or 4 and instead use some of the billions they've received in aid to build infrastructure and education.

jraby3··on Iran's internet blackout may become permanent, with access for elites only
You only have to look at Iran's history to see what this eventually leads to.

The left loves Islamists even though Islamists are against everything the left stands for (women's rights, freedom of press, religion, sexuality, etc).

I think Qatar's influence ($20B+ spent on US education) is the biggest factor here.

jraby3··on Think of Pavlov
I kind of wish it had more examples. But I agree well written and thoughtful.
jraby3··on The suck is why we're here
I've thought about this a lot. But my conclusion is that many times the base idea is valuable but the author spends time using examples and different use cases to show you the effectiveness of the idea and a wider range of uses.

Of course this isn't always true but it's true quite often.

Take one random example - Spark: The Revolutionary Science of Exercise and the Brain.

The idea is in the title. You don't need to read more than that to benefit from the idea. But all the different varieties of benefit and pathways and studies the author sites are still valuable.

jraby3··on Iron Beam: Israel's first operational anti drone laser system
Let's not pretend that the Jews just appeared there. 800k Jews were kicked out of middle eastern countries. If we rewind the clock shouldn't those Jews also get their Middle East land back? Or did they not terrorize enough people and hijack enough airplanes to qualify?

Source: I was born in Baghdad. Father and other relatives were tortured and murdered there.

jraby3··on Why isn't online age verification just like showing your ID in person?
I mean one sided criticism that doesn't account for the damage done to kids by having no online limits, and assuming everyone in the world is as tech savvy as they are.
jraby3··on Why isn't online age verification just like showing your ID in person?
It's harder than you think to manage all the devices especially if you aren't especially tech savvy.

There are also a ton of tricks and workarounds it's super frustrating.

jraby3··on Why isn't online age verification just like showing your ID in person?
Can you send a link or explain how this can be done?

As a not super tech savvy parent I find it impossible to keep my son off screens. He always finds a workaround. So I'm a fan of age verification especially after reading The Anxious Generation, despite all the hate it gets from hacker news.
