jpkeisala··on A bigger problem than ISIS: The Mosul Dam is failing
Because that would not make as good headline.
jpkeisala··on Tim Cook assures employees that Apple is committed to the Mac
Same here, I thought I would never touch it and almost looked option without it. Glad I bought touchscreen.
jpkeisala··on Apple 13" MacBook Pro review: the best computer you shouldn’t buy
I waited new MacBook Pro for 2 years. Once it came out I was ready to buy it but then I hesitated on the checkout flow and paused. I waited another 4 weeks reading reviews and slowly moved out of the Mac world where I have been since 2006. Today I received Dell’s XPS 13 so I am back to Windows now. It will be interesting to see if Apple is able to lure me back in to their world in 2017 but right now I am very excited with my new XPS.
jpkeisala··on What Makes a Senior Software Developer?
Senior by definition means older person. I might be wrong but in other than software industry Senior usually means 20+ years experience from the field? I think person than is valuable for development perhaps should be called something else if s/he is young?
jpkeisala··on Google Trusted Contacts
My daughter has iPhone 5S with Find my Friends activated. I find it rather buggy. It does not "stream" location so for example if she is on bus and I try to check she jumps off on the right stop it goes something like this: Now I can see she is 500M from her bus stop, Updating.... cannot locate.... updating... cannot locate... after few minutes... Doorbell rings, oh she is home now and app also show her location is home. Not exactly pleasant experience as a parent.
jpkeisala··on Why the MacBook Pro Is Limited to 16GB of RAM
> I run a browser with 20 tabs, linux VM in the background, and webpack and gulp in the background.

Sounds like you do coding that does not really need much RAM. I don't think nearly all developers have your requirements. I was hoping that with new MBP. I could move my MongoDB/MS SQL Server to local virtual enviroment. For that I needed Virtual Windows Server which eats about 12-15 GB ram with Mongo and SQL instances running.

jpkeisala··on Switching to Ubuntu
I tried out in the shop XPS 13 and new MBP. Even though XPS is a really nice laptop MBP is nicer looking. I changed in 2006 from Windows to Mac but now I am really struggling to decide if I should go back to Windows with XPS or buy that overpriced MBP.
jpkeisala··on Ask HN: Any good resources for finding software jobs abroad?
Do you speak the language? I image in Czech Republic english is not very common. Have you had any challenges with the language barrier?
jpkeisala··on The Nobel Peace Prize 2016: Juan Manuel Santos
If Colombia some day get peace deal with FARC, isn't there other paramilitary groups still active? Do they have significant presence? Also, another thing I wonder as European looking Colombia from the distance is that is FARC that organized and controlled that they are able to tell their soldiers put weapons down? I always thought that those kidnappers are simply crooks making money through extrusion not really Marxist idealists?
jpkeisala··on Daydream – Google VR
I just wonder if VR is ever going to be for the big masses. Right now it feels like 3D Television. Everyone is pushing it and I admit it's nice like 3D television is nice.
jpkeisala··on Ask HN: Alternatives to AWS?
I have been using Hetzner, I have few servers there. Linux and Windows. They are very cheap if you look someone in Europe. I usually recommend Hetzner and if there will be scaling problems we can always move to expensive places like AWS and Azure.

I also have great experiences with Azure but not sure how it fits to startup world. I am only working on Azure on enterprise (.NET) customers and for them it is a nice service. Microsoft has Bizpark where you can get tons of Azure power for next to nothing. https://bizspark.microsoft.com//plus/

I have not worked on Google Cloud but as mentioned in comments I probably should look into that.

jpkeisala··on Introducing Google Container-VM Image
How is actually Google compared to other cloud hosting providers in pricing? Is there any independent site that compares cloud hosting providers?
jpkeisala··on MH17 missile 'brought in from Russia'
Wasn't this concluded 2 years ago?
jpkeisala··on Uber revolution will not last
I have welcomed Uber to Europe with open hands but I really don't understand why they consider they should not apply to same laws as it has been put to Taxi drivers?
jpkeisala··on Uber revolution will not last
Usually I would not mind but then again if I am tired or busy which I usually am when commuting. I don't feel like listening other people problems.
jpkeisala··on Static Website Generators
That is a great idea for a plugin.
jpkeisala··on Apple takes on Google and Microsoft with iWorks real-time collaboration
My kids (10 and 7 years) have iPads in their school. They were bought for educational purposes but they are full of games. While I like the idea kids should learn to code. I really don't see any need for children that are not fluent on reading and writing to have any computers in the school.
jpkeisala··on DDoS protection
They don't have good reputation but I am Hetzner customer. I have run Windows Server and some smaller Linux boxes more than 2 years and I haven't had any problems. What I have understood from comments that you need to take care of everything yourself but that is really the same case in EC2 and Azure in the end of the day.
jpkeisala··on 1Password – Standalone licenses vs. new subscription service
This was also my decision to go with Dashlane. I spent some time testing different managers but Dashlane was the easiest to use and pricing was straightforward. I am working on different laptops/servers at customers I wanted one price with unlimited devices.
jpkeisala··on Italy’s teetering banks will be Europe’s next crisis
I would say that is quite low taxation in Western Europe.
jpkeisala··on Angular 2 – Best Practises
I totally agree on "mature" (aka boring old). I make my income on enterprise and recommending React here would be like recommending Rails over Java or C#. Meaning possibility of landing contract would be significantly lower.
jpkeisala··on Russian Track and Field Team Barred from Rio Olympics
Olympics since cold-war era has been show for high-tech steroid uses. Some get caught but the best ones not.
jpkeisala··on Blocklist of all Facebook domains
answering my own guestion... I could have just google it instead of writing my thoughts... https://www.google.com/search?q=un-productive+sites&ie=utf-8...
jpkeisala··on Blocklist of all Facebook domains
Slightly off topic: It would be nice to have some kind of extension for Chrome that blocks all Time-Wasting websites with one click. Has anyone seen something like that?
jpkeisala··on No patent if invention lies only in computer program, says Indian Patent Office
Exacty, it does. You cannot patent software as you cannot patent math except maybe in US.
jpkeisala··on We're ditching the office completely
It's nice to read comments here as people are writing they like to work in the office. I also do like it. I am self-employed and in the longer run it is so boring to be alone at home when there is nobody to talk to. Funnily, when I was fulltime I dreamed to work from home.
jpkeisala··on Litvinenko Inquiry Publishes Report
So we should not discuss about this murder since there are other more significant murders?
jpkeisala··on Google has made Usenet archives impossible to search
Yes, it was fixed last spring.
jpkeisala··on Norwegians campaign to give Finland a mountain
What a nice gesture from our great neighbor to give few extra meters to our highest peak.
