jpfromlondon··on Why the global elite gave up on spelling and grammar
I notice the variance in british and american pronunciation of especially romance + greek words, correct or otherwise and I'm willing to give credit where it's due, I'm also happy to celebrate the differences rather than mock or correct them, I just won't accept the slander!
jpfromlondon··on Why the global elite gave up on spelling and grammar
the soft g is triggering, I can hear my classics tutor yelling even 20+ years later, don't get me started on the american pronunciation of hegemony!
jpfromlondon··on Why the global elite gave up on spelling and grammar
It's much deeper than that probably because the kludge of english is in large part french.

But I also completely disagree, I don't think americans are attempting to pronounce croissant correctly for example, whereas brits will be much closer with no attempt at intentional mispronunciation, it just happens that brits are much closer on some and further on others, and vice versa re americans.

and I don't think there is any malice, in fact it became common among the british aspirational middle-class in the 70s to adopt french words in an attempt to appear cultured and upper, ironically now a clear marker of non-u.

jpfromlondon··on Why the global elite gave up on spelling and grammar
America is at least as guilty of mispronouncing non-english words it's just natural drift.

As to fillet and valet, they joined english before the contemporary french pronunciation, and are much closer to the middle-french.

jpfromlondon··on Tinnitus Is Connected to Sleep
Yeah, I've never had tinnitus last more than a minute or two thanks to this, however I rarely get it and I imagine those afflicted pathologically will get zero mileage out of it, but I am curious.

The Mediterranean diet is something of a myth, some Mediterranean countries fair quite well on the life expectancy, CHD, and CVD figures, some not so much.

Additionally the data used are considered suspicious in the case of at least Italy to my recollection.

jpfromlondon··on What Not Reading Does to Your Writing
>This “TV brain” prose is influenced primarily by narrative visual media—TV, film, TikToks, video game cut scenes, etc.

This trend is very palpable, I'm resistant even to the oft used description of passages, pages, or chapters as "scenes".

jpfromlondon··on AI makes you boring
>Whoa whoa whoa hold your horses, code has a pretty important property that ordinary prose doesn’t have: it can make real things happen even if no one reads it (it’s executable).

When your boss (assuming you have one) tells you to do something, do you just ignore it?

jpfromlondon··on How I use Obsidian (2023)
Good point, I overlooked this because the overlap is huge.
jpfromlondon··on Claims of disability are highest at elite universities
there is also institutional favourability for the disadvantaged, it's hardly a surprise that most attendees are claiming disability...they were selected in part because they identified themselves as victims/disabled/etc.
jpfromlondon··on How I use Obsidian (2023)
The PKM pipeline is :

Discovering PM solutions upon entering the workforce and deciding to use them for your personal life.

Shortcomings drive you to discover PKM software like Notion and Obsidian.

Picking either one or the other.

Switching from Notion to Obsidian or vice versa.

Starting to write your own PKM.

There is no class of software more entropic because everyone's requirements are so specific to the individual.

jpfromlondon··on Semantic Diffusion (2006)
when someone says:

>where our vocabulary is limited and often confusing.

What I read or hear is:

>where my vocabulary is limited.

We all live in a post-Wolfe world, there is a rich mine of unused archaic english, and plenty of unsubsumed latin and greek words ripe for repurpose.

jpfromlondon··on The Godless Students of London University
Hardly, it was known for vocational guilds, and two of the worlds oldest universities are geographically next door.
jpfromlondon··on Privilege is bad grammar
- Signalling: I dress more formally than everyone else to make up for the fact I'm less professional in other ways

- No signalling: I dress like everyone else because I am like everyone else

- Countersignalling: I wear ratty old clothes with holes in them, and nobody will dare to question it because I'm the important one here

In old-money settings all three of these things can be true simultaneously, dressing more formally than people outside, just like everyone else inside (in fact expected, to indicate familiarity with the standards of class, and often worn, ratty, old, and comfortable.

a firm isn't going to sell them to reseller in the third world as it will cause brand dilution, additionally current customer base will feel shortchanged and shop elsewhere.

Much more likely is as the op said: selling to a company that will dispose of the stock.

I read it in print and thought it was awful, such an interesting idea but explored by a rank amateur, curious to know how different the original creepypasta was.

Edit: Oh it's a full rewrite? I had no idea.

jpfromlondon··on AI is killing B2B SaaS
In my career I've deployed close to 100 different saas products at enterprise level and can tell you that most of the current crop are slapped-together half-finished dross with a huge sales and marketing team.

In the time it takes to deploy semi-bespoke saas, or while waiting for the current licence term to expire it would be very easy to develop a more suitable and much cheaper product in-house, this was true before AI tools and doubly so now.

There's also no proven causal link between UPFs and ill health.

By country the largest consumers of UPFs are also on average the longest lived. They are a by-product of wealth, as is obesity, what people are trying to pin on UPFs is much more likely to be a symptom of excess.

If you trace all countries by causes and incidences of death or morbidity there is nothing unusual or unexpected in the countries that consume the most UPFs, in some cases they even have lower figures.

Unprocessed food is usually a sign of quality, that is all.

Eat less. Lift more. Run more.
