jozzy-james··on Guitar Center files for bankruptcy
personally i've never spent time in a GC unless i was bored. other times i just buy what i want and return it if it's a dud for my use-case. their limited amp setup isn't reflective of what i use anyway, so it's not like i could make an informed decision.

anecdotal case in point: did once try out a new guitar, sounded good there - get it back to my house and line feedback like no other. i have many other guitars that work fine on this setup, but this one wanted to be a complainer...no way that any hands-on demo would have stopped that, unless i haul all my gear in there as well.

GC owns musician's friend, fwiw

american musical supply and zzounds are pretty good as well with the finance options. just don't usually get as much boutique stuff as sweetwater does

GC/sam ash have been pretty lackluster for quite some time - other than maybe some traditional instruments. don't feel like paying out the nose for some patch cables? want some actual pro-audio level monitors? good luck finding them there. places like sweetwater/vintage king/etc fill that need for the most part, but good luck living in the radius of the actual stores...so in this case, online ordering is paramount.

unrelated, but kraft music is a good spot for domestic orders in my experience
jozzy-james··on Matestack – Reactive UIs in pure Ruby
i think it really depends on the industry - mine for example, most of the bigger players are running express apps on the FE (not 100% sure on backend, seems a mix of go/node and other things) - but why bother to run express/node on the frontend if you're not also going to leverage it on the backend.

you might be interested in https://inertiajs.com/ if you're using rails (or laravel) - doesn't solve SSR if needed, but in my limited use does provide a nice middle ground for not needing to go full SPA

editing to add: https://laravel-mix.com/ is a nice wrapper around some common webpack setup gotchas, despite having laravel in the name it's just regular old webpack (other than the default output directories)...https://luckyframework.org uses it as well

jozzy-james··on PHP 8: Before and After
i did a simple test between PHP, Java, Elixir and Haskell for fun (with a full payload/page that represents my problem domain) - PHP was within +/-10ms of the others for the same payload/template process. Guess which one was the slowest?
jozzy-james··on PHP 8: Before and After
the largest performance issue i've come across with the execution model is that connection pooling is...well, pretty crap. opcache handles most of the other interpreted woes rather well.
jozzy-james··on PHP 8: Before and After
that's not really a thing you do in PHP, outside of frameworks like swoole/roadrunner. by nature it's a fire/execute/die shared-nothing model
jozzy-james··on PHP 8: Before and After
if you do something in a naive way, PHP performance can tank pretty severe - but that's more down to the developer implementation rather than a shortcoming of the language itself

this all seems everything looks like a nail when all you have is a hammer (emacs in this case)

addendum - this was also before indianapolis adopted DST, the winter is just shit

as someone in the midwest, i do not look back fondly on the days where i would get up to work and it's dark, and leave work and it's dark - all while spending my 9 hours in a windowless server room

just be glad it's not windows XP
jozzy-james··on Persisting as a solo founder
sometimes a person seemingly doing unrelated things is still 'working'. i know at least for myself, i run through various scenarios of the outcome rather than staring at the code before i make my decision to implement.

edit: and i'll typically run through those scenarios while doing seemingly unrelated stuff, like shitposting on reddit or sitting in a blacked out room.

jozzy-james··on Show HN: I built an After Effects for dummies
so am i correct in that this essentially scripts an AE program and renders when done (used to do those for automated things myself)? if so, kudos - and if not, kudos as well

e.keyUp...c'mon man, don't need a whole library
jozzy-james··on In spite of an increase in Internet speed, webpage speeds have not improved
just for a little snark to defend client side use - lemme know when you find a responsive bin packing algorithm i can do server side that doesn't choke out the dom
