jotakami··on Ask HN: How did you prepare for being a first-time parent?
I strongly recommend the book The Nurture Assumption by Judith Harris. It has done more to shape my mindset about being a parent than anything else I have read. You could also wait a few years to read it, as it is more relevant once your child is old enough to start having social interactions outside the home.

Honestly, the changes in my marriage were much more difficult to handle than actually being a parent. You and your spouse (assuming you are married) will change as individuals once you become parents, and issues that never came up before may suddenly feel like relationship deal-breakers. I have no advice to offer because frankly I didn’t handle it well—just a word of caution.

jotakami··on Open sourcing crypto-arbitrage bot in Python – back to the dawn of crypto hype
Been writing a trading bot over the past 6 months and I was shaking my head vigorously at literally every single point the author brought up.

At this point the only real “arbitrage” opportunities are through derivatives (swaps and futures). However, there is still enough inefficiency in the market for individuals to squeeze out a bit of profit.

jotakami··on Open sourcing crypto-arbitrage bot in Python – back to the dawn of crypto hype
Can confirm. Early January 2018 I made $10k in a week because the BTC/JPY price was 10% higher than the BTC/USD price. It required a partner in Japan and lots of international money remittances though...
jotakami··on Against Against Pseudoaddiction
To add to your argument, “addiction” is not a cause of death, it is a risk factor for various unnatural causes such as suicide and overdose. The same could be said for chronic pain, but it is pretty easy to understand why chronic, untreated pain would lead to suicide. The connection between addiction and suicide is much more complex, and may have more to do with the reality of being an addict in modern society than the medical consequences of the addiction itself.
jotakami··on 94k Bitcoin (1B USD) transferred from unknown wallet to unknown wallet
Contracts are established between market participants; the issuer is just a facilitator. LedgerX options are fully collateralized so you could certainly reap the entire value if you bought a put and the price dropped to 0. Liquidity is not very deep though, so you wouldn’t be able to buy much. Margined products (such as Deribit’s options) would probably be force-closed long before the price hit 0.
jotakami··on Show HN: Historical order book reconstruction API for crypto markets
I doubt I’ll ever be trading enough volume to support this expense, but you just might get me addicted with those monthly free API access days...
jotakami··on GnuCash: Open-source double-entry accounting software
Switched to GnuCash about four years ago after Quicken forced me to pay for a new version of their software. I have very complicated personal finances (churning, crypto trading, etc.) and double-entry is the only possible way to keep an accurate account of my cash flow and net worth.
jotakami··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
I got into crypto investing last year but with a strategy that nobody else seems to be doing (except maybe hedge funds). I don’t have the stomach or emotional stability for risky trades so everything I do is delta-neutral. Mostly leveraged futures basis trades, i.e. selling contango futures and buying spot, or vice versa on backwardated futures.

It will never generate the same returns that skilled long/short trading can pull, but I also never have a drawdown. Still managed >50% return last year so I’ll tale it.

jotakami··on Ask HN: What is your money-making side project outside programming?
Yep, the standard practice nowadays is buying Visa gift cards and then using them to purchase money orders. It’s usually only worth the time and effort if you have a good sign up bonus on your credit card. However, I’ve also been looking into some creative and profitable ways to utilize the “float”—the pile of cash you’re sitting on for 4-6 weeks until the bill is due. It’s definitely worth my time if I can use that productively and roll it over each month...
