joshuahaglund··on For 11 Years, the Soviet Union Had No Weekends (2018)
I'm a little confused by the first part because yeah Marx never saw a modern factory but he was there at the beginning of industrialization. Marx collaborated with Engels whose family owned large textile factories. I think he saw what was coming and was saying that under capitalism the owners of these factories are going to be in charge of everyone else. Also that capitalism is inherently unstable and prone to cyclical crisis which empower the capitalists and impoverish workers. At least in the US, it appears to me he was correct.

They've got electronically controlled clutches, no torque converter.

Yeah, probably more expensive than a manual but they save gas which will cost much more long term.

joshuahaglund··on In few years renewable power may become a better economic option
I googled coal subsidy and this is the first result.

There's a lot of tax credits and subsidies. "Clean coal" for instance, or 3.4 billion for carbon sequestration (did that get past the lab yet?)

The article isn't very good is what.

joshuahaglund··on Lilium – Electric vertical take-off and landing jet
I'm not a pilot, but the fan pods are flaps, so I think there's some steering there.

Also, it has a full aircraft parachute as a last resort.

joshuahaglund··on The US Supreme Court is hearing a case about patent law’s “exhaustion doctrine”
We once had the privilege of refilling our machines with whatever we wanted. Now, because of the misuse of patents, we can't do that.
joshuahaglund··on The US Supreme Court is hearing a case about patent law’s “exhaustion doctrine”
The title is a play on the phrase "this is why we can't have nice things." To me, this reminds us that the things we have, we might not own.

"Control what you do with your stuff" sounds like the concept of ownership.

Yes patents do other things but according to Lexmark their patent means you don't get to do the things you traditionally get to do with the printer you bought.

joshuahaglund··on To fix L.A.'s traffic, we need tolls
The other way we pay for roads is through sales taxes (aka the most regressive tax). At least tolls are use-based, rather than on the general population.
joshuahaglund··on The Jet Engines with 'Digital Twins'
> In the second module an air compressor takes air in and puts it under high pressure, which shrinks the volume of the air and allows the engine to be smaller (because compressed air takes up less space).

Does this reporter know what they're talking about? I always thought compressors were an essential part of a jet engine (compression heats the air, then fuel is sprayed in which auto-ignites, expanding, and turning the turbine blades). Not just because compressed air takes up less space.

joshuahaglund··on Ask HN: Is S3 down?
you sure? it's not for me.
joshuahaglund··on Mark Zuckerburg comments on Peter Thiel controversy regarding Trump donation
When people say "half the country supports X candidate" I like to point out polls only count registered voters who are likely to vote, which is closer to half the eligible voting population (which of course doesn't include any of the non-adults).

It's more like each candidate has support from less than a quarter of the population and most people don't support either.

Somehow I find that reassuring.

joshuahaglund··on Why I hate frameworks (2005)
Those parts detract from an otherwise clever story. Among the many reasons women might be uncomfortable in software -- dudes who joke about killing them.
joshuahaglund··on Japan home to 541,000 young recluses
The number is limited to people aged 15-39. I can't figure out what percent that is, maybe someone with a wolfram alpha pro account can do it:

Also, having trouble leaving the house vs: The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry defines hikikomori as people who have stayed at home for at least six months without going to school or work, or going out to interact with others.

joshuahaglund··on The Arctic is warming twice as fast as rest of the world
And most of that corn goes to feed cattle, which produce methane (worse than CO2). So, what we do with the plants matters. Do we allow them to sequester the carbon or we put their carbon right back into the atmosphere?
