joshmaker··on An ABC proof too tough even for mathematicians
Computers may not be able to solve proofs, but they can help. In fact, there is a BOINC project aimed at finding triples for the ABC conjecture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABC@home
joshmaker··on Corporations Want Obama's Winning Formula
The same way advertising a product is different from giving it away.
joshmaker··on Corporations Want Obama's Winning Formula
I think that is a bit of an ad hoc fallace.

Sure, because Obama won we declare him the most charismatic candidate. Had he lost, people would say the oposite, declaring him 'professorial' 'aloof' or 'elitist' (all criticisms directed at Obama at times in the media) and point out his lackluster performance in the first debate as evidence of a lack of charisma.

Perception of charisma is also heavily influenced by our personal biases. I'm sure that we perceive candidates we like as being more charismatic. I bet a majority of Democrats would say Obama is charismatic and a majority of Republican would disagree.

joshmaker··on Why Did the U.S. Abandon the Gold Standard?
A poll of American economists a while back found 0% in favor of returning to the gold standard: http://www.igmchicago.org/igm-economic-experts-panel/poll-re...
joshmaker··on How Huffington Post's Clever Traffic-Generation Machine Works
Does anyone know where they pull there SEO data? Are all the sites doing this sort of thing using their own bespoke SEO algorithms or are there third party API solutions for this market? If not, that could be a valuable service.
joshmaker··on Why Smart People Are Stupid
Which is why the paper used "various cognitive measurements" which together could be taken as a proxy for intelligence instead of relying on only on S.A.T. scores.
joshmaker··on Make Better Select Boxes with Chosen
If you are a Django user, you should checkout django-choosen which makes it easy to use Chosen in your admin: https://github.com/theatlantic/django-chosen
joshmaker··on State of the Backbone
Backbone has a lot of neat features, but when I used it I really didn't like that I had to specify the tag name, the class name, etc in a Backbone.View object. It seems like these are part of the template logic that should be in a .js file.

joshmaker··on US and Israel created Stuxnet, lost control of it
Because Iran is a signatory of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_Non-Proliferation_Treat...) and their development of Nuclear weapons is thus in violation of international law.
joshmaker··on Top Technologies Used By YC Companies
Not just odd, but completely wrong. For data that doesn't add up to 100%, they should be using a bar chart or some other representation of data. Unfortunately, this is the sort of sloppiness that makes me wonder what other amateur mistakes might have been made in collating the data.
joshmaker··on Microsoft's Azure cloud down and out for 8 hours
"We have identified the root cause of this incident. It has been traced back to a cert issue triggered on 2/29/2012 GMT"
joshmaker··on Why the Clean Tech Boom Went Bust
The problem with that idea is that in the current political climate any new carbon tax is a dead on arrival. Realistically, the only options that are politically feasible are to either do nothing or else subsidize green tech industries that seem promising.
joshmaker··on Louis C.K. "I've never seen a check from a [TV] comedy special"
From this statement by Louis CK: https://buy.louisck.net/statement

"Minus some money for PayPal charges etc, I have a profit around $200,000... This is less than I would have been paid by a large company to simply perform the show..."

If he can get over 200k for show, he may not be mega-rich by television celebrity standards, but he is doing pretty well for himself.

edit: to be clear, I don't begrudge him his success or think that he isn't entitled to sell his material for $5 a pop. I just think that making him out to be a starving artist is a mischaracterization.

joshmaker··on Inspired by XKCD:903, Wikipedia steps to philosophy
From my limited clicks, it seems like both science and mathematics are even faster to get to in this method than philosophy.
joshmaker··on Roger Ebert: The dying of the light
Two things:

1. That movies are being projected at considerably less than their intended brightness seems like an empirical fact to me. Unless you really believe that watching a movie through a pair of sunglasses (the equivalent to projecting it through polarized lenses) might improve the experience I'm not sure what more evidence you need. The pragmatic basis for his outrage is the fact that movies are often projected with much less light than their creators intended.

2. Calling someone "well read" is the same as calling them knowledgeable or well informed. While I believe Ebert to be well read on this particular issue, I believe from the context of your post that you meant to write "widely read" (or else I misinterpreted your argument).

joshmaker··on Gawker's Traffic Numbers Are Worse Than Anyone Anticipated
When I first saw the redesign, I thought it was kinda weird but would probably be great on an ipad. But when I checked it out, the navigation was broken.

I checked it again just now on my iPad to see if they had fixed the problem. This time my iPad was redirected to the "mobile" version of the site - which is just a long list of headlines without any pictues.

joshmaker··on Japan's crisis: one month later
As an FYI, the creator for The Big Picture now works for The Atlantic and did a very similar photo gallery several days earlier: http://www.theatlantic.com/infocus/2011/04/japan-earthquake-...
