joshbetz··on How to Delete Facebook and Instagram from Your Life Forever
Being on FB doesn’t prevent that.
joshbetz··on New Hyper Key
Thanks, I fixed it.
joshbetz··on Ask HN: Team for Hire?
> Interesting. I know there are Very good reasons for not relocating to either Los Angeles or San Francisco, but what were the specific reasons (aside from family/homes, if any) you and the team had for opting not to relocate?

Do you need reasons other than family/homes?

joshbetz··on Vim Tips to Make Yourself Faster
> I suspect ":30" would still work.

Yep.

I only use relative line numbers in normal mode. The snippet I posted switches back and forth automatically.

joshbetz··on Did English ever have a formal version of “you”?
Du isn't formal though?
joshbetz··on Startup Idea: Solve Personal Analytics
I had pretty much this exact same idea a year ago. The people I talked to didn't seem all that interested, not that it necessarily matters.
joshbetz··on Enrollment In Harvard's Intro To Computer Science Jumped 590% In 10 Years
I think enrollment was down everywhere between 1999 and around 2004. I've heard that it's back to a .com bubble level.
joshbetz··on Why a veteran web developer finally turned to OS-native apps
The idea that you have to be a "native person" or a "web person" is ridiculous. Let's just use the tools that make the most sense for the project at hand.
joshbetz··on How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Twitter and Other Popular Sites
WordPress.com also uses Google Authenticator to enable two factor auth.
joshbetz··on Shame.css
I'm calling it hax.css
joshbetz··on Apple More than Doubles Capital Return Program
$200k/year?
joshbetz··on OStatus: like Twitter, but open
Sounds cool, but I like that there is an OStatus W3C community group.
joshbetz··on Ack shortcuts
That's awesome. "Are My Sites Up ?" didn't even know it was down. So... Canceling that.

It's back though. Thanks for attempting to let me know. Maybe if I had push notifications for Hacker News turned on I would have caught this right away. :)

joshbetz··on The startup world, ranked and visualized
So Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft are in the startup world, but Apple isn't?
joshbetz··on The startup world, ranked and visualized
What does it have to do with?

The 217,000 most important companies, financial firms, and people...

joshbetz··on The startup world, ranked and visualized
Except for the part where there are 10 companies ranked higher than Apple...
joshbetz··on Self-signed SSL Certificates
All updates are one-click and it tells you when updates are available. I don't see a problem with expecting people to keep their software up-to-date. I don't know of any software that is secure forever without ever worrying about updates.
joshbetz··on Self-signed SSL Certificates
Thanks for pointing that out. Safari wasn't giving me any warnings, but Chrome definitely does.
joshbetz··on Self-signed SSL Certificates
I definitely never meant to suggest that training people to ignore security warnings was the right way to do anything. I've updated to the post to note that you would be required to install the certificate locally to be certain that it's actually the correct cert.

I appreciate the suggestions for free options. There have been some people that have problems with these services in the past, but I'll definitely look into them.
