joshbaptiste··on The foundation of a more secure web: Google Trust Services
And you sure are added to my favorite comment if the week, Indeed Google wants to be the complete stack.
joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: How many comments do you read on HN? Is it worth it?
Definitely, specifically concerning subjects that are high level such as crypto, compilers, language design etc.. There are subject matter experts here who give a trove of information for free on HN that I would easily pay money to hear at a conference or lecture. I particularly enjoyed the recent "Rust vs. GO" thread where local folks broke down the advantages/disadvantages of both languages without dissolving in a flame war. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13430108

joshbaptiste··on Five big mysteries about CRISPR’s origins
I listened to the audio book and must state that it's very involved and not really for the layman like me. I got lost on the eukaryotes explanation which lost me for much of the other topics.
joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: What “new” programming languages will you be using in 2017
Great dom96, I have the pre-release and i'm really enjoying it. When I get a hang of Nim I wanna create a set of Youtube "Learning Nim" screencasts since Nim based videos are scarce on Youtube.
joshbaptiste··on In 2017, learn every language
nim-lang is my language to concentrate on in 2017
joshbaptiste··on Once mocked, Facebook’s $1B acquisition of Instagram was a good move
I run Umatrix where I disable Javascript by default and allow portions on approved sites, BGR doesn't require Javascript to display the articles so no issue reading here, but I do agree that many sites are just horrible at launch ad placement.
joshbaptiste··on How to Run a More Secure Browser
Indeed, I remember this was created to thwart an older (Java?) exploit that specifically grabbed keys in ~/.ssh
joshbaptiste··on One of the best performances in ‘Rogue One’ is by an actor who died in 1994
Interesting.. Chris Stuckmann, a popular Youtube Movie reviewer, described the special effects as being flawless. https://youtu.be/oxWFm5kUBGk?t=124
joshbaptiste··on Android Things – IoT Platform
Anyone know of a super cheap GSM network to utilize all these new IoT contraptions?
joshbaptiste··on KiTTY – A fork of PuTTY 0.67 with many additional features
This is cool.. The pscp integration alone is worth me trying.
joshbaptiste··on NES Classic Mini boot image dump method via UART and USB
As a casual gamer who likes playing the games of my childhood. I'd prefer a dedicated retro rig that (due to minimal requirements) could be the same form factor as an Amazon FireTv stick without dealing with the "hacky" nature of the emu scene or purchasing a full blown console.
joshbaptiste··on NES Classic Mini boot image dump method via UART and USB
Yea but it involves finding and purchasing a (most likely) used Wii. I'm a casual gamer and never heard of virtual console. A dedicated retro console would fare better and be cheaper IMO, just like this one (without any such features) which sold out in seconds on Amazon.
joshbaptiste··on NES Classic Mini boot image dump method via UART and USB
I really wish Nintendo or Sega would come out with an official retro WiFi appliance that allows one to buy classic games from an "App Store" and play multiplayer player games over the network. They have the extensive catalog of retro games to make money (NES/SNES/N64 or Master system/Genesis) and it wouldn't take that much hardware to do it.
joshbaptiste··on Amazon sells out of the NES Classic Edition in less than a minute
Nintendo needs to come out with an official retro wifi appliance that allows one to buy classic games from an App Store and play 2 player games over the network.
joshbaptiste··on Seven years of Go
As a Pythonista , I tried small projects in Go and Rust but ended up liking Nim overall. Compiles to C and the syntax just feels like I'm writing Python.
joshbaptiste··on Aeron: Efficient reliable UDP unicast, UDP multicast, and IPC message transport
The author Martin Thompson is one of those rare breed of developers who understands the sheer inner workings and the effects of his programs from the source to processor.

joshbaptiste··on Did Our Ancestors Become Bipedal So They Could Throw?
I live in a world where 90% of my friends and family believe that they came from the sins of a woman who decided to eat an apple. I recently read a book called Sapiens, this book really drilled into my mind that we homo-sapiens are a derivative of a single great ape that had two daughters, one that became the ancestor of all chimpanzees and the other all humans.

If human origin interests you there is a great 10 minute video from the Youtube Kurzgesagt channel that lead me to read Sapiens.

joshbaptiste··on Dtrace Conf 2016 Event Videos
Dtrace is a great tool to dive in and understand the internals of an operating system without being a systems programmer per se.
joshbaptiste··on Why we use OpenBSD at VidiGuard
Wish he went more into how exactly OpenBSD is keeping their customer data safe, are they running a database on OpenBSD? Storing data on the file system?
joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: Cheap dedicated hosting options for side projects
The best bang for buck I have found so far for large storage hosting is the slot hosting option from http://www.delimiter.com, where you mail in your own hard-drive and they provide you with a local VPS that can mount it in an Atlanta data center for $100/yr. I sent a 6TB drive. I then run other cheap VPS's (usually on the east coast for lower latency) that mount the drive via sshfs.
joshbaptiste··on Being sued, in East Texas, for using the Google Play Store [video]
TLDW - Patent troll sues Xplane creator after he migrated his app to the Google play store. They claim they own the general idea of the Google play store. Law firms create these cases for billable hours for their lawyers and some of their parent judges in Texas. Patent trolls and law firms in the end want to receive a settlement by targeting app creators and not Google themselves who are well equipped to defend themselves, http://www.thepatentscam.com/ .

joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: Why do browsers still support pop up dialogs and other bad behavior?
I use uMatrix on Chrome and only allow certain things to run on various pages, to only render the content I want.
joshbaptiste··on Charge, a phone company with features for nerds
To get rid of VM notifications, I recorded 2 minute+ of silence as my VM greeting, zero VMs after that.
joshbaptiste··on Fitbit Acquires Coin
That's why I use my toe.

While I usually try to stay serious while reading HN, That statement really made me lol. I'm rooting more for Samsung's magnetic secure transmission (MST) to be more mainstream then these card replacements.

joshbaptiste··on Memory Access Patterns Are Important (2012)

joshbaptiste··on Show HN: Botlist – An App Store for Bots

joshbaptiste··on The company that bribed the world
Great write up, I never knew about the billion dollar robbery in Moldova and had to watch a video to understand how it was done https://youtu.be/KxsylnDO15w , seemed straight out of a mission impossible movie.
joshbaptiste··on OneSignal now sends iOS push notifications 100x faster
Why the move to Rust specifically? Were other compiled languages such as Go, D, Nim considered? How was the learning curve from Ruby to Rust? It's not too frequent where I read posts about companies migrating from dynamic languages directly to Rust, very cool.
