joshbaptiste··on MacOS command line version of the WireGuard VPN is now available for testing
Most of the time I do not need my whole ip stack to be forwarded over a secure channel but simply HTTP/s .. here is where SSH/socks proxying suits well for me in hotels etc..
joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: Which books have made you introspect?
Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind by Yuval Noah Harari.

Taught me that Religion, nation states, national pride etc.. are all imagined realities we all share to allow our particular country to thrive as a whole collective.

joshbaptiste··on 1.1.1.1: Fast, privacy-first consumer DNS service
yes of course.. common in totalitarian countries
joshbaptiste··on Geany – Lightweight IDE for Linux and Windows
No Vim bindings as explained by developers (not the goal of the core project) and currently no Nim support https://www.geany.org/Main/AllFiletypes

I will have to stick with VIM/VSCode for now, but holy cow this IDE is fast.

joshbaptiste··on Life Exists in the Driest Desert on Earth. It Could Exist on Mars, Too
"Why Alien Life Would be our Doom - The Great Filter" Great short video from Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell

joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: What should I do if I found my self a target for a hacker?

  Huh?
  targeting your home PC?
  targeting your identity?
  targeting your online servers?
joshbaptiste··on ZFS for Linux
I'm hoping BcacheFS will be the next COW FS to take over this space in Linux.
joshbaptiste··on Don't use VPN services
Exactly.. paid VPN services are useful really for thwarting ISP traffic snooping and organizations that monitor for piracy file downloading.
joshbaptiste··on Bcachefs needs more guinea pigs
You know what.. since I installed a fresh Arch Linux (Manjaro) on my laptop today, i'll give Bcachefs a go as my encrypted /home. You can also support the file-system monetarily via https://www.patreon.com/bcachefs
joshbaptiste··on Why is Rust difficult?
Ditto.. Nim was just easier for me to absorb as a Python person myself and I'm really enjoying it.
joshbaptiste··on Things I Wish I'd Known About Bash
Hang out in #bash on IRC Freenode and you will be a Bash jedi http://mywiki.wooledge.org/BashFAQ best resource IMO for quick Bash syntax lookups as I always need to refer to the BashFaq to remember parameter expansion sub-string retrieval.

joshbaptiste··on Introducing Vireo: A Lightweight and Versatile Video Processing Library
So a lightweight version of ffmpeg/mencoder, but what is meant by "lightweight" in terms of stream video processing? Does it perform conversions from one codec to another using less CPU cycles.

joshbaptiste··on 7th RISC-V conference videos
What a great time to be alive. On the server and desktop fronts we develop and interact with software that runs mainly on the x86 instruction set architectures (ISA), designed and created more than 30 years ago. Today we get to see videos of engineers adapting algorithms and extensions to a relatively new ISA to efficiently handle modern workloads. While the software side has seen significant in roads with opensource at all levels of industry, data centers with respect of the hardware is mainly proprietary and I think RISC-V is the first step to change that.
joshbaptiste··on Ask HN: CS and programming books of 2017
Thanks for this.. will be a great read even tough i'm more of a systems user space type of person.
joshbaptiste··on Bitcoin Exchanges Are Buckling While the Price Surges Past 16,000
Great comment and brings things a lot more to light when viewed from this angle.
joshbaptiste··on Bitcoin Exchanges Are Buckling While the Price Surges Past 16,000
Wonder if they'll be a consulting market for IT engineers from the stock market exchanges for the cryptocurrency exchanges since they have experience handling a large volume of transactions etc.. All the current crypto exchanges seize when high volume, stop losses etc.. are triggered at the moment.
joshbaptiste··on Sysdig Inspect: A GUI for System Call Analysis
Thanks to BPF devs and system folks like Brendan Gregg Linux tracing on the 4.x kernels can rival Solaris/FreeBSD + Dtrace. So my question is where does Sysdig fit in the tracing equation here?
joshbaptiste··on America’s flat-Earth movement appears to be growing – Daily chart
Flat earthers have an answer for every scientific question posed. Now suppose NASA Is faking every video etc.. There's no way Americas rivals Soviets, North Korea etc.. who have been or have satellites in space would collude with America to hide such information.
joshbaptiste··on Fleas, Fleas, Fleas: on parasites in history
it's interesting to learn the profound impact a species has (regardless of size) on bio-diversity. While we (Homo-Sapiens) are succeeding as a species, it is at the detriment of many other species and the earth itself.
joshbaptiste··on Regression in Linux 4.14 – using bcache can destroy the file system
There was a recent HN post that delved into booting and testing on many machines and fuzzing injections but can't find it at the moment.
joshbaptiste··on How do groups work on Linux?
Useful is an understatement of The Linux Programming Interface (TLPI), yes seven years old but the only major thing that has probably changed is the number of syscalls has risen, other than that, still solid for understanding the OS primitives and interfaces that the Kernel uses to interact with user land. On the BSD side "The Design and Implementation of the FreeBSD Operating System (2nd Edition)" is also a great book to further one's understanding of operating system interfaces on the BSD side.
joshbaptiste··on Show HN: Coinmon – Check Bitcoin Prices in Terminal
Indeed.. I'll probably write a Nim version as I prefer a single binary and not rely on having a JVM, Node, Python etc.. VM and associated libraries pre-installed.
joshbaptiste··on Firefox 57.0 Released
yup.. enabled this option on Linux Mint 17.1, FireFox 51 .. crashed the nouveau driver 10 minutes later.. had to restart.
joshbaptiste··on h2: HTTP 2.0 client and server implementation for Rust
if you're still looking around, you want to have a look at Nim, an alternative systems programming language with optional GC. https://nim-lang.org/
joshbaptiste··on DragonflyBSD v5.0 released
I really wish Dfly had more shine (especially in the cloud space), because I would like to see how the hybrid mono/micro kernel architecture compares to todays heavy monolithic architectures in terms of raw transaction speed and stability at scale.
joshbaptiste··on DragonflyBSD v5.0 released
Yes I run DragonFly 4.6 in my VMWare cluster and use it mainly as a file server.
joshbaptiste··on DragonflyBSD v5.0 released
Well yes because Dfly has really small community compared to even FreeBSD .. supporting/testing multiple architectures is a monumental task for distro maintainers.
joshbaptiste··on Secure tunnels to localhost – open source ngrok alternative
This is great.. as I really do like Ngrok but have no use for the paid version, with a 5/yr VPS on lowendbox you can have your localhost tunneling needs settled here.
joshbaptiste··on MTPuTTY – Multi-Tabbed PuTTY
As an avid tmux user I rarely find the need for a tabbed Putty. Though if I had to choose an alternative Putty fork, Kitty would get my vote..
