josh_carterPDX··on Coinbase is experiencing connectivity issues
It's becoming increasingly frustrating that a platform meant to make it easier to trade crypto can go down so frequently. It leads to more skepticism by mainstream entities when Coinbase is their only experience into the cryptocurrency market. I echo the other comments here that they need to figure out their stability issues prior to their IPO. There's no way they can go public with such a poorly run platform. And I say all of this as someone that is an active user of Coinbase.
josh_carterPDX··on Bitcoin breaks above $20k
I think this is an important point. So many people compare bitcoin to a regular stock. While there are ways you can compare the two, there aren't as many use cases for stocks as there are with bitcoin. If people would focus on that we could really change the way the underbanked access capital. It could be the thing that tips the scale to build equitable access to capital.
josh_carterPDX··on Bitcoin breaks above $20k
The main difference is that the feds as well as other mainstream institutions are beginning to buy cryptocurrencies. That didn't happen in 2017. There are a number of analysts that are predicting it will get much higher than $20,000 because many governments are trying to print their way out of trouble.
josh_carterPDX··on Show HN: I made a Mahjong browser game
Love this. I used to play this as a kid. Love the different patterns. Thanks for creating this. Bookmarked!
josh_carterPDX··on Founder Paydays at Exit (IPO)
What a gross overstep by Spotify. Over $9B combined between the two founders!?! Meanwhile bands are struggling to make it through the pandemic. Guess I'll be deleting my Spotify account. Barf.

josh_carterPDX··on Is Y Combinator worth it?
You could ask the same question for virtually ANY accelerator program out there. And at the end of the day the answer is, "it depends."

Every founder and every company is different. If you are a first time founder and your network is limited then these programs open a network you could never penetrate on your own.

For seasoned founders these programs help to connect you with resources as if you had additional team members meaning (if you took advantage of it in the right way) you could easily scale your business quickly.

If you are a founder who is sensitive to your early valuation then an accelerator may not make sense.

Every founder needs to sit down and collect as much input as they can to make the most informative decision to help grow their business.

josh_carterPDX··on Shutting Down NavHere
Thanks for sharing this. Having gone through this myself I can totally relate.

"By the end of 2018, we had hundreds of free-trial users, and were serving 100s of thousands of forwarding requests each day."

This is probably my biggest learning through my own entrepreneurial journey. The days of "freemium" are over. Long live fast profitability!

I am a serial entrepreneur who has built developer tool companies and have taken them through a top tier accelerator. I have also run accelerator for companies like Techstars and WeWork. My background is mainly building a company from nothing and growing it at scale. I am currently consulting for some early stage startups and love the process of helping companies find their first customers and partners.

josh_carterPDX··on Launch HN: Kanaree.io – Liberate your clickstream data
Hi everyone,

Today we are rebranding and relaunching a clickstream data tool called Kanaree.io. Now, you're probably wondering why this one is any different than the others that are out there. It's a fair question. With Kanaree you KEEP your data. Kanaree does not house data. The platform was built to funnel your clickstream data into YOUR data warehouse. More information at Kanaree.io!

josh_carterPDX··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
I like the new focus on how they will make money. While it's nice to be a mission-driven org they always straddled that line of being aspirational and being "for profit." It makes the value proposition tough to define. Putting an emphasis on revenue will better define the business without needing to sell their souls.
josh_carterPDX··on Fujitsu announces permanent work-from-home plan
Unless you have year round school, this will always be an issue.
josh_carterPDX··on Fujitsu announces permanent work-from-home plan
I think it's even more difficult when you factor in kids at home. We've had to deal with that at our home which means our ability to get work done has been cut in half. It also puts a lot of burden on co-workers. The biggest issue with this has been people without kids wondering why coworkers WITH kids aren't getting as much done.
josh_carterPDX··on Facebook announces policy changes ahead of 2020 elections
Hard to do that when they've given millions the Republican party. I know they like to think they play the middle, but Facebook as a company has favored Republicans, historically. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
josh_carterPDX··on WeWork Files for IPO
I think that's what excites me about WeWork Labs. It's not just dedicated desks. There is programming and real tangible help.

I've been speaking to a number of founders who were WeWork members, but got so much more when they moved to the Labs space.

Full disclosure: I am the WeWork Labs Manager for Portland.

josh_carterPDX··on WeWork Files for IPO
I'm curious what the right course of action would have been. You mentioned that they held events, but that wasn't good enough. If you noticed people were working side by side and not engaging, what were you doing to help break that cycle?
josh_carterPDX··on Show HN: RealtimeApp – Deploy a realtime app using serverless components
Since this is a general purpose platform with not much in the way of functionality. Meaning, you're not going to build the next Flappy Bird on this platform.

My question is what is the ceiling? At what point do you need to move off the platform and how easy is the migration?

I find people are pretty gun shy to park their data into a platform that doesn't make it easy to migrate off (Parse comes to mind).

josh_carterPDX··on Show HN: RealtimeApp – Deploy a realtime app using serverless components
Having seen a lot of these types of services there is always a question about scale. In other words, these are great for quick prototyping, but at a certain level you have to move off a service like this onto a more robust infrastructure.

That being said, how hard is it to move the data off this platform and migrate it to another once you've reached scale?

josh_carterPDX··on Lyft prices IPO at top of range
Absolutely.

If you consider a $40 ride will only yield about $25 for the driver, there is a lot of room to give more to drivers.

Sad to see this sort of cash grab by the current Lyft shareholders.

josh_carterPDX··on Lyft prices IPO at top of range
Agree.

However, the point I was trying to make is that a driver could not afford to buy shares even if they wanted to.

josh_carterPDX··on Lyft prices IPO at top of range
90% of Lyft drivers work there while having another job or while looking for full time work.

At $72 per share I'm sure they can afford to invest in the company they made so valuable. :-/

josh_carterPDX··on Pros and Cons of Coworking Spaces
Coworking spaces are great just from a network effects perspective. Worth the cost if they have they can make solid connections.

There is a great Portland based company helping people find viable alternatives to coworking spaces. It's called Workfrom. You can find them at https://workfrom.co/

josh_carterPDX··on Twitter forces all new users to enter a valid phone number
Full disclosure: I used to work at Twilio.

We ported wireless numbers in and out all the time.

josh_carterPDX··on Twitter forces all new users to enter a valid phone number
I agree. The first thing I thought was that someone will build a script that creates a Twitter account then simply uses Twilio's API to create a valid phone number to receive verifications.

Good luck Twitter!

josh_carterPDX··on Why I turned down my Y Combinator interview
It's more complicated than that.

Most companies that go through a program like YC are pretty early. Entering and accepting the funding means that often times companies have inflated valuations. Being accepted into a top tier program is not enough to pull in investors in many cases especially if it means that the valuation is inflated and the company is still working on product market fit or early revenue.

josh_carterPDX··on Ask HN: Startup Failure Book. Would You Read It? Contribute?
Thanks for the links. I'll check them out!
josh_carterPDX··on Ask HN: Startup failed after years of work – Can I even get a job now?
First of all, sorry for the failure of your company. I've been there and it's not fun. I am also looking for work, but finding it pretty difficult. My advice, lean on your network.

Also, I am writing a book about startup failure and would love to include yours if you're willing. You can email me at founder.failures@gmail.com.

Look forward to hearing from you and good luck on your search!

josh_carterPDX··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (March 2019)
Sorry for the late response. I have done that in the past, but would like to find something in operations or business development.
josh_carterPDX··on Everyone should read support emails
I loved my time at Twilio partly because Jeff made it a point to make sure everyone, no matter their role, understood what was happening in support. Many engineers, product managers, and even sales people would take support tickets to get a better understanding about what the customers were struggling with.

Every company needs to do more to understand what the customers are struggling with and the easiest way to do that is to get on the front lines.
