josephcooney··on We’ve lost control of our personal data, including 33M NetProspex records
The type of people that make expensive purchases (and therefore probably have more money) might be a more attractive target to criminals.
josephcooney··on Monte Carlo estimation of Pi
Wow. IOCCC spins my head yet again.
josephcooney··on Ask HN: Does anyone dream of code?
Yep. My subconscious often gives me very interesting "left field" type problem solving/troubleshooting advice during my programming dreams.
josephcooney··on Google’s SRE book is now public
I bought it from O'Reilly....it came with mobi and epub versions. http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920041528.do
josephcooney··on Launch HN: Scaphold.io (YC W17) – GraphQL Backend as a Service
I initially parsed the name as 'scaphoid', one of the carpal bones. I thought they were making a joke about reducing typing...turns out I just can't read properly.
josephcooney··on New DirectX Shader Compiler Based on Clang/LLVM Open-Sourced
While you're technically correct, ROTOR hadn't received any updates for a long time, and the source was licensed in such a was as to make sure anyone who could benefit from it running on *NIX platforms was heavily incentivized not to do so.
josephcooney··on KeepassXC – A cross-platform community fork of KeepassX
Not really. If dropbox is compromised and they get your .kdbx file they've still got to be able to break that (unless you use the same password for dropbox and your kdbx file....which is not a good idea).
josephcooney··on A Visa for founders, engineers and investors willing to join France
Everyone's public transport system looks shabby compared to Tokyo.
josephcooney··on Rumors of Cmd’s death have been greatly exaggerated
The horrible syntax of Powershell isn't something I can look past.
josephcooney··on Do Not Eat, Touch, or Even Inhale the Air Around the Manchineel Tree
Gympie Gympie plant is also not nice. http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/topics/science-enviro...
josephcooney··on AnyBar: OS X menubar status indicator
Never was the cultural differences between the windows and OSX platforms more striking than when looking at the PowerPro page http://powerpro.cresadu.com/xfeatures.htm and the HammerSpoon page http://www.hammerspoon.org/
josephcooney··on New Zealand's Tectonic Dragon Awakens
> [I] have never been 'prey' to another creature while playing in the bus

Survivor bias, mate.

josephcooney··on How a Man’s Bad Math Helped Ruin Decades of English Soccer
> They have not won anything for a while

Back to back FA Cups in 2013-14 and 2014-15? I think the rest of your analysis is pretty valid however.

josephcooney··on Ask HN: How do you get people to use your product when you suck at networking?
Peter Thiel doesn't think so. See "competition is for losers" et. al. http://www.wsj.com/articles/peter-thiel-competition-is-for-l...
josephcooney··on SVG has more potential
Like https://github.com/canvg/canvg (which AFAIK doesn't do hit testing like 'real' SVG, but is a promising start).
josephcooney··on FBI director: Cover up your webcam
All the author did was say it wasn't a concern for them. Nowhere did they say it didn't matter.
josephcooney··on FAA Urges Passengers to Not Use Samsung Galaxy Note 7 on Planes
What happens after I send my Note 7 back, and get a new one with the problem corrected? Will I still be banned on Australian airlines?
josephcooney··on Stepping down as Nodevember organizer
The gender-neutral honorific, apparently.
josephcooney··on Stepping down as Nodevember organizer
You say "some speakers" and "a number of speakers". I read the article by Mx Kas Perch. Is there anyone else?

I guess regarding the search for facts/reasons/examples - I guess we're interested in trying to form a view as to whether that is an understandable position on the part of these 'other speakers'. No doubt there is a spectrum here. If it is just "person X doesn't like person Y because they hurt X's feelings once" that is quite a different thing to "persons X, Y and Z have been physically threatened by person A and fear for their lives".

josephcooney··on Text Summarization with TensorFlow
Yep. That's the one. Thanks.
josephcooney··on Text Summarization with TensorFlow
I seem to recall someone used Microsoft's AutoSummarize feature to reduce and reduce classical works of literature to a few lines. The results were pretty hilarious, but I can't find it now.
josephcooney··on .NET Framework 4.6.2
From a version number point of view maybe, but to say 'it works' is pretty charitable. CLR versions vs framework version confusion - "oh, you've got a .NET 3.5 app, you need CLR version 2.0". ASP.NET version vs framework versions. ASP.NET 5 vs ASP.NET 4.6 (ASP.NET 5 was re-named to ASP.NET Core 1.0). I guess CLR versioning "works" but in the broader .net ecosystem it is still a problem.
josephcooney··on Emails from a CEO Who Just Has a Few Changes to the Website
Ooops, I see you beat me to it.
josephcooney··on Emails from a CEO Who Just Has a Few Changes to the Website
clientsfromhell is filled with stories like this http://clientsfromhell.net/
josephcooney··on Weasels Are Built for the Hunt
The flip-side: Specialization is for insects.
josephcooney··on Show HN: New calendar app idea
Agree re: scrolling - it would have been difficult/impossible to get across the behaviour of the app in the is regard without hijacking.
josephcooney··on Britain is the most corrupt country in the world?
Except that the U.S. is considered to have a well-enough developed system of on-shore tax havens to not require going to Panama.
josephcooney··on Null References: The Billion Dollar Mistake – Tony Hoare (2009) [video]
If they guy who invented them calls them a mistake then maybe they are, or were at least to him.
josephcooney··on Zendesk and the Art of Trademark Trolling
Well played, sir/ma'am. You make an excellent point.
josephcooney··on Hogwatch – a bandwidth monitor that shows per process network transfer
Task Manager or Resource Monitor (which you can launch from Task Manager)? I see lots of per-process stuff in the latter but not the former.
