josephcooney··on The case for bad coffee (2015)
please post links...I want to see these documentaries. And completely reject the premise of the article.
josephcooney··on Bleeding-edge tech will kill your startup
another excellent article on the same topic https://mcfunley.com/choose-boring-technology
josephcooney··on Sleepless in Silicon Valley
I am kind of in that category...and I'm interested in relative fluctuations in body fat % even though I don't give much credence to the absolute accuracy of the body fat measure.
josephcooney··on Sleepless in Silicon Valley
But weight by itself (and BMI) are fairly crude measures. You could be 6' tall, be a muscular 210 lbs with a body fat of 10% and be classed as obese. The next level of the "onion" is body composition (fancy scales do this, but not that well). Then you're getting dexa scans....and there are probably other levels after that. I think I'd rather know if my weight and body fat % are going up or down, rather than their absolute value.
josephcooney··on Can you buy your own train?
In the gilded age owning your own rail car was like owning your own private jet. A lot of moguls owned one or more. Rockefeller was too cheap to buy one, but one of the railroads gave him one to curry favour with him. THAT is power.
josephcooney··on M-16: A Bureaucratic Horror Story (1981)
The article was written in 1981...I assume that is the "now" they refer to.
josephcooney··on The MBA Myth and the Cult of the CEO
You can't say "no" to everything, otherwise you'd be taking security's job.
josephcooney··on No Thank You, Mr. Pecker
There were some photos of him recently looking like a bit of a unit - e.g. https://www.businessinsider.com/jeff-bezos-before-and-after/...
josephcooney··on Memory usage of a toy C# server and client with 500K concurrent connections on
Yes, since the get-go .NET has targeted a VM called the CLR (the common language runtime). The biggest difference between the JVM and the CLR (initially) was that Microsoft designed the CLR to be mutli-language, whereas the JVM was written "just for java".
josephcooney··on Microsoft changed how it interviews software developers
So, you're telling me they made Vint Cerf do a whiteboard interview?
josephcooney··on Stop Learning Frameworks
I think it's a balance that each person has to set to the "right" level for them based on the stage of their career, and the trajectory they would like it to take. What's "right" for someone who wants to become a project manager is different than what will be "right" for someone who wants to be an architect or strike out and found their own company.

This topic is of some interest to me - I am co-authoring a book called "evergreen skills for software developers" https://evergreenskills.com/ and delivered a talk at a local developer conference on it about a year ago https://jcooney.net/post/2018/10/evergreen.html

josephcooney··on Google's cross-platform Flutter UI toolkit goes 1.0
There is a x-plat open-source UI framework heavily inspired by WPF called Avalonia that has a Skia renderer.
josephcooney··on The Unified Theory of Ram Dass
funnily enough Ram Das has a great quote on this - something like "If you think you're enlightened go and spend some time with your family".
josephcooney··on Forced Out by Deadly Fires, Then Trapped in Traffic
During the "Black Saturday" bush fires in Victoria in 2009 they estimated the temperature of the fires to be around 1200 degrees celsius (2190 F). My father-in-law is a volunteer in the rural fire service in Australia. He says some fires he's fought have been so hot they hurt your face to look at them for more than a few seconds, even when they are hundreds of meters away. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Saturday_bushfires
josephcooney··on The Scent of Bad Psychology
As per the article it seems that even rigorous science isn't even _that_ rigorous these days.
josephcooney··on Netflix is the latest company to try bypassing Apple’s app store
That doesn't matter. The app store review process isn't an impartial court of law, where everyone gets a fair hearing. If apple want to do things for competitive or capricious reasons, they can.
josephcooney··on People Aren’t Dumb, the World Is Hard
Disagree. It killed it.
josephcooney··on The Entire History of Steel
That's in the name of the publication though, not the title of the article.
josephcooney··on The Entire History of Steel
Gee, I dunno....I have a few books on my bookshelf from that mechanical engineering degree I did that are either largely or entirely about steel. I can't help but feel that this "entire" history might omit a few details, but it is a good start.
josephcooney··on YouTube’s Piracy Filter Blocks MIT Courses, Blender Videos, and More
I'm guessing here, but if you claim that work Y infringes your copyright of X. If it turns out to be false you lose copyright of X.
josephcooney··on Why Is Front-End Development So Unstable?
I agree. Throw into the mix non functional aesthetic changes. Even if the actual requirements/functionality didn't change new design trends would mean you'd be at minimum re-skinning/themeing your site/web app every 18 months or so just so it doesn't look "dated".
josephcooney··on Maker's Schedule, Manager's Schedule (2009)
Pro tip: Decline meetings, as many as possible.
josephcooney··on Effective Engineer – Notes
I did some reading into project Oxygen. From what I could tell it set out to find the most important qualities for managers at google, which made the results much less surprising. I would love to find more info on this either way.
josephcooney··on Effective Engineer – Notes
This would be like a study that found that height was completely uncorrelated with performance in the NBA. Doesn't mean that height is irrelevant in basketball, only that selection bias is in full effect and that we're not looking at a 'normal' population with respect to height. Same IMO with respect to google and engineering skill.
josephcooney··on What Made the SR-71 Blackbird Such a Badass Plane (2015)
Indeed. I was thinking exactly the same thing.
josephcooney··on What Made the SR-71 Blackbird Such a Badass Plane (2015)
This is hilarious.
josephcooney··on What Made the SR-71 Blackbird Such a Badass Plane (2015)
I also really enjoyed this book, and wrote up some notes on what I took away from it that I thought could apply to software engineering https://jcooney.net/post/2017/08/03/skunkworks.html
josephcooney··on A Nuclear Jet at Chernobyl Around 21:23:45 UTC on April 25, 1986
Apparently she took a bit of artistic licence with some of the things she wrote, although the pictures are real, the place is real, and she did visit there.

josephcooney··on Leadership Lessons from a Former Navy SEAL
Jocko's podcast is pretty good. The recent one with Harley Flanagan was a bit of an eye opener. http://jockopodcast2.com/2017/05/10/74-hard-times-violence-d...
josephcooney··on Show HN: React-data sheet, Excel-like spreadsheet component
Agree. Here is a rant from me expressing the same sentiment from a while ago https://jcooney.net/post/2008/06/08/Data-grids-lack-of-imagi...
