I am a Deep Learning Researcher & Engineer. I started my career in Artificial Intelligence with my degree in Computer Science Engineering, which I graduated with first-class honors in 2006. I continued my education with a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence and an MBA. I have worked mostly with startups from San Francisco, London and Madrid. Only on remote roles since 2015.
jorgemf··on Do patents kill innovation? The US patent office is asking
Because Samsung will use LG ideas too. As a company, I think, it is better to partner with others, so it is a win-win.
jorgemf··on Do patents kill innovation? The US patent office is asking
>> Tying patents to revenues of licensees does not work too, because any patent licensed to Samsung will instantly become void.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Other big companies will prefer to have Samsung as a partner instead as an enemy, and small companies will have very difficult to compete with samsung at scale. And if they do it is because they have done so many other things right, which it is great for consumers

jorgemf··on Companies excluding Coloradans from remote jobs to avoid sharing salary ranges
Compensation doesn't have to be only the salary. The company can offer you other non-tangible things that might be worth work with them even for a lower salary. Maybe more free time, or more flexibility in your life it is worth less money in the salary.

jorgemf··on The Kotlin Foundation
Why do you say so?

I do think kotlin isnt only aiming to the Java Virtual Machine, it is mucho more.

jorgemf··on Ask HN: How can I quickly trim my AWS bill?
It is very unlikely that anyone is going to give you a good advice with so little information about your cost structure. There is great people here who can provide invaluable insights about your costs but they need to have more information.

We use a lot of GPU intensive models and 80% of revenue goes into AWS, doesn't mean that your AWS cost is mostly GPU. It should mean that, but who knows. Tell us how is your AWS infrastructure, what instances do you have, how much do they cost to you, etc. Because with your information about the costs the best advice you can get is to not use AWS neither GPU-intensive ML models.

jorgemf··on Fast implementation of DeepMind's AlphaZero algorithm in Julia
how good is your AI so far?
jorgemf··on OpenAI API
It is not a novel idea and I don't think it is practical. If the natural language was practical for bash we would already have already "list directory" instead of "ls" and so on. "ls" is just 3 keystrokes while the natural language option is 15, 5 times more.
jorgemf··on Ask HN: How do I reach making $1-1.5k/mo in 13 months?
> More of a opinion, but overseas freelancing opportunities aren't gonna hire a newbie and fiverr is a race to bottom.

Why? have you tried? I had a company for some time and we hired remote developers who have just finished their careers. I am sure more startups will be willing to do the same. It is a matter or knowing where to look at. Try angel.co, or the monthly thread here for jobs. These jobs might not last for all your life but they will give you the initial experience you need to be freelance.

Freelance sites could be a good option too. You will have to offer a lower rate than others to get a job, but as I said, you need something to start, them things get easier (or not).

Anyway, best way to find a job is to be able to show what you are able to do. So you must need some open source projects the people who potentially will hire you can see how good you are.

jorgemf··on Machine Unlearning
Sometimes the data is an image of your face and you don't want it to be used for any algorithm, regardless it has your name associated to it or not
jorgemf··on Pinscreen Deepfake Live Prototype [video]
Training yes, but for inference a commercial GPU can do that at 14fps with a small latency (very noticeable in the video)
jorgemf··on Taking ML to production with Rust
I whish it was kotlin instead of Swift. But as much as I want to move away from python, there are reasons to stick with it (ML libraries and low entry barrier for non programers)

jorgemf··on Scientists Identify How Many Trees to Plant and Where to Stop Climate Crisis
what about the other 3 examples I told you?

There are obvious things, there are complex things. But not caring is not a solution.

jorgemf··on Scientists Identify How Many Trees to Plant and Where to Stop Climate Crisis
I don't think it is that complicated:

- go by car or by public transport?

- buy local vegetables vs eating a burger in a franchise?

- turn on the heater vs use a bigger blanket?

- go to work in a suit with a tie in summer with A/C at maximum power vs go in summer clothes with a normal A/C?

That is voting with your wallet and your lifestyle. Please stop saying is others fault... it is our fault, of everybody, from politics to regular people. And we ALL have to do something.

jorgemf··on Microsoft is investing $1B in OpenAI
How do you know we are not closer to AGI? Because we don't how to create AGI we cannot know whether we are closer or not. We can say artificial neural networks are not the way to go because they are not like real neurons, but we can say very little about neurons that could be possible artificial neural networks are actually the way to achieve intelligence. The topic is so complex and we know very little that any strong claim is very likely to be wrong
jorgemf··on How Apple, Google, and other tech companies conspired against their own workers
I don't get your point. As I understand it they have decreased the demand to decrease the price.

jorgemf··on Show HN: Deep Learning in TensorFlow – The Roadmap for Study and Learning
Thanks. I always forgot about caffe2 when talking about pytorch. I couldn't anything for JavaScript and mobile seems not as good supported as TF but for sure they will improve.
jorgemf··on Show HN: Deep Learning in TensorFlow – The Roadmap for Study and Learning
There are not so many type of problems for such a complex tool. Your problem usually fits in one category among classification, prediction, clustering, generation or control. Then you have different domains as images, video, audio, text, etc. With a combination or type of problem and domain you sure can have a roadmap, but you probably will need to read papers to solve your problem if it is not something some has done before.
jorgemf··on Show HN: Deep Learning in TensorFlow – The Roadmap for Study and Learning
Is there any way to use a pytorch model in Mobile and in a website without a server API? For me 5hose are two good reasons to keep using TensorFlow.
