jordanmoconnor··on Show HN: TinyStore - A minimal store for your Shopify Lite plan
Agreed - saying something like "Having a storefront on Shopify would normally cost you an extra $20/month. TinyStore does this for $5/month." would sell pretty well I'd assume.
jordanmoconnor··on Argentine version of Google falls into “wrong” hands
Wouldn't it be funny if DDG was actually Google.
jordanmoconnor··on Show HN: Neonpad.io – A neon plain text editor
From the looks of his Github profile, he builds projects for fun. Good for practicing skills.
jordanmoconnor··on Show HN: UnnaturalScrollWheels – Better scroll wheel settings for macOS
Natural scroll direction while using a mouse isn't traditionally how one would use a mouse - but the issue is if you set the scroll direction to change for your mouse (on a mac) it also sets it for your trackpad.
jordanmoconnor··on The dude that built DudeRanch.com
It still appears wonky, yes. FF + uBlock.
jordanmoconnor··on Show HN: Pod Hunt – The best new podcasts daily
Pod Hunt is awesome for podcast discovery, and only getting better!

Excited to see what the future holds.

Strange that the homepage is a direct copy of the [stripe](https://stripe.com) homepage.
jordanmoconnor··on Google and Mozilla are failing to support browser extension developers
I make an extension for a living.

Use Stripe and bake billing/account management into your app.

Same experience across browsers.

jordanmoconnor··on Run Your Own Website
Highly recommend Jekyll/GitHub pages for static sites.

Many people recommend Jekyll/Hugo/Vue-press + Netlify as well.

jordanmoconnor··on Show HN: Jobs Done – A ritual app for ending the work day inspired by Deep Work
This layout immediately reminded me of a Typeform form, and then got me thinking that if this were a Typeform form it would automatically log your responses and you could have historical data on your tasks, thoughts, and actions.
jordanmoconnor··on Study: Today’s dads are engaging more with their kids
Love this project! My son is turning two in August, and he loves smashing the keyboard on my laptop. Having a dedicated PC for him would be fun. And he'd love to help build it, I'm sure.
jordanmoconnor··on Ask HN: What is your favorite way of setting up online store in 2018?
Check out https://www.starterstory.com/. There' a list of tools that these e-commerce companies use.
jordanmoconnor··on Toys 'R' Us Founder Charles Lazarus Dies at 94
Just realized the phonetic connection between Lazarus and Toys 'R' Us.

"Please don't complain that a submission is inappropriate. If a story is spam or off-topic, flag it. Don't feed egregious comments by replying; flag them instead. If you flag something, please don't also comment that you did."
jordanmoconnor··on The day I accidentally killed a little boy
I once worked a summer job at a state park in Western, NY. One of the employees there was a leather-skinned rough type that mostly kept to himself.

One day, I'm not sure how it was brought up, he remarked to me that he once killed a 22 year-old man in a construction accident when he was operating a large crane.

It rocked his world, and he was never the same.

I can't imagine living with that amount of regret and anxiety. Trying to fix it in your head. What could I have done differently? But it never changes, and you can't undo what you did.

At the same time, there is ultimately forgiveness from both parties, though there is a lot of grief. Things will never be the same, but staying in the past is the best way to never move forward.

jordanmoconnor··on How to Write Articles and Essays Quickly and Expertly (2006)
There's an 80/20 to everything. I think that style is more preference so you can focus on getting your thoughts out without getting distracted. I think a detailed outline does the same thing.
jordanmoconnor··on Motel Living and Slowly Dying
It's not the cost, but the mobility that is necessary for jobs like the one described. He travels (several hours) to the next destination and rests before his shift.
jordanmoconnor··on The Science of Addictive Junk Food (2013)
That's one of the more hotly debated comment threads I've seen on this site. Lots of "You are wrong" and "You don't understand". People take their food seriously!
jordanmoconnor··on Ask HN: Why So Limited Options for Web-Based Video Editing?
1: Sorry, I wasn't clear. I was thinking the files could be manipulated locally, and then the files + a script could be uploaded and processed remotely.

2: Have you used Google Docs / Other PWAs offline?

3: Yes. Not sure if PWAs have the power to edit locally yet.

jordanmoconnor··on Ask HN: Why So Limited Options for Web-Based Video Editing?
I use my Chromebook for 90% of my personal tasks (email, writing, and light web code editing). It'd just be nice to be able to use it for 100% of my tasks!
jordanmoconnor··on Ask HN: Why So Limited Options for Web-Based Video Editing?
Yes, obviously you would have to upload at some point to get them into the cloud, but I was thinking the files could be manipulated locally first then the files + a script could be uploaded and processed remotely.

There definitely would be some cost to processing in the cloud, but I think it would be worth it.

I just look at apps like Adobe Photoshop CC that can be run on a Chromebook and I'm wondering why it's not being adopted more widely.

jordanmoconnor··on Ask HN: Is it just me or is every normal Wordpress blog slowish?
It's not just you - I have always avoided WordPress because of this. I don't have any technical data to back it up, but that's how it feels!

Hugo/Jekyll is my default. Jekyll especially with the Github pages integration.

jordanmoconnor··on Why Do We Still Commute?
I currently commute 45 minutes, but I do work on the side from home. I find the only time I can truly be productive at home is between 4 AM and 9 AM. When everybody (wife / kid) is up, it's hard to avoid distractions at home.

If I worked remotely, I would do that 5 hour stint, make breakfast and play with the kids, then do a gym / coffee shop routine for 3 or so more hours to finish up work for the day.

jordanmoconnor··on It is as if you were doing work
Mandatory Communications Meeting
jordanmoconnor··on Metadata is the real data
I've been using the free version for the past several weeks and have been enjoying it. I am an avid Keep user, and StandardNotes has all but replaced that.

I find it refreshing writing in markdown for minimal formatting, and the interface gets out of your way to let you write.

I'd give it a try if you're wondering!

jordanmoconnor··on Ask HN: I don't want to be a founder anymore
My wife would give me a good kick in the pants if I ever tried to slack off on my goals and dreams. I always go to her if I need some encouragement.
jordanmoconnor··on Ask HN: Is your company (job) family friendly?
I think by not at least having some github / remote competence, you are showing remote employers that your aren't in the right mindset.

I'm sure you'd be great at it. But if you want to work remotely, showing you can collaborate on an online interface would probably help!

jordanmoconnor··on Student Debt Giant Navient to Borrowers: You’re on Your Own
Tuition + room and board was about $40K for 4 years.

The school has a good internship/co-op program, so I was fortunate to step into a junior engineering role right after graduation. I'm a C+/B- student. Graduated with a 2.98 GPA.
