jonthepirate··on How Uber could end up as Silicon Valley's most spectacular crash
I've also been calling for this...

"Ridesharing" as we know is it going to crash https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13762242

Their valuation got so far ahead of itself that priced into it is global domination. Now that it clearly is not a global monopoly, there's nowhere to go but down. Everyday one of their employees goes to work is a day wasted where they could have been vesting at a company which is not horribly over valued.

Disclaimer: Former Lyft engineer / stockholder here (2014-2016)

jonthepirate··on Lyft Is Said to Seek New Funding as Its Rival Uber Stumbles
Hopefully us former employees see some liquidity before driverless wipes these companies out. The value of ride dispatching aggregators is in the driver network. Apps and cars are easy to make.
jonthepirate··on An Open Letter to the Uber Board and Investors
As an investor in Lyft, I'm sorry to say that I hope Uber doesn't change anything they're doing. The Uber management is the best thing that's happened to my personal finances in a while.
jonthepirate··on Why I Don’t Talk to Google Recruiters
I get so many obnoxious unsolicited recruiter emails that I have set an email autoresponder that triggers when the word "opportunity" comes in from someone I don't know. Here's the template:

-----

Hi,

I get a lot of messages like these. Since time is valuable, I promise to fully read your original email plus any job web pages that describe the opportunities you are hiring for for $100. You can paypal me at <your email here>.

For $500, I'll even do a coding exercise or come in for an onsite interview.

Cheers,

<Yournamehere>

jonthepirate··on LibreTaxi – A free and open source alternative to Uber and Lyft
It is written in Javascript.
jonthepirate··on Trump expresses doubts about security of all computers
He will publicly cast doubt on things that are contrary to his own opinions. As an example, he was the leader of the birther movement claiming Obama was not born in the USA. Tip of the iceberg.
jonthepirate··on DynamoDB cannot store empty strings
I also have done 3 years of MongoDB before I (unwillingly) wrote an app with it... worst development experience I've ever had. I wouldn't have used it were it not for my corporate overlords at the time.

My new rule of thumb: Use plain databases for most things and only use DynamoDB if there's a precise feature in your system that it is well suited for.

DynamoDB is a horrible general use database.

jonthepirate··on Waymo: Google's self-driving car company
More power to anybody who's willing to put their children in a car and not pay attention to the road or have control the outcomes of relentless traffic threats all around them.

In my view, all of this technology is much better suited to aid the human driver as a safety enhancement system rather than a full replacement for vehicle navigation.

jonthepirate··on When should I use Node for back end?
I have never used C# but I'd rather learn it than write code in Javascript.
jonthepirate··on Taking PHP Seriously
PHP engineer of 10 years here - all things being equal, I cannot, in good faith, recommend a person use PHP for anything. General rule of thumb is, if you can, use Python. We still see folks actively choosing it though.. mostly because it's a language we already know and better to create an MVP in something folks know rather than struggle with something "better" that will take a person 5x longer to write while they learn it.

I would bet a donut that Slack is off PHP within 2 years.

jonthepirate··on Snapchat Parent Working on IPO That Could Value Company at $25B or More
Iceberg ahead, captain! I wish there was some way to short this.
jonthepirate··on YouTube Go: YouTube reimagined for the next generation of YouTube viewers
I would love the ability to leave a video playing on my phone when I turn the screen off. I often will listen to a song but as soon as the app minimizes or the phone goes to sleep mode, it stops.

Shoot.. I'll take a look in about 10 or so hrs. I just stayed up all night coding. ;) Sounds like the map javascript file I'm using may be borking in some way I have not seen before. Thanks for reporting it!
jonthepirate··on MySQL is a Better NoSQL
+1 for "do not use joins"
jonthepirate··on PHP: md5('240610708') == md5('QNKCDZO')

jonthepirate··on Ask HN: I'm in SF for the weekend. What places can I tour that tout their tech?
You can see the tech office tours on techcrunch videos... the bigger ones are giant lavish offices filled with desks and laptops. Boring. Tour the city.
jonthepirate··on Richard Lynch, an awesome PHP community guy and former colleague needs our help
I have coded with PHP for a long while now. Thank you for your contributions, Richard. +1 donation made.

jonthepirate··on Show HN: Dating turned upside down - Tomonotomo
I've created dating apps and I learned the market is totally won by a few big companies. I could never overcome the chicken & egg problem. Not knowing anything about your project, I would have to honestly say the 80k people on there is probably a frivolous claim. You may have scraped some other site and put that many bogus profiles on there.

I suppose any other dating sites that break through will be based on extremely simple ideas with elegant or new user interfaces. For example, How About We is an extremely simple idea. The concept of dating friends of friends was already tried several times. The last time I heard of it it was being done by circl.es. I would suggest trying something that is really unique that nobody has ever heard of which would help you break out. I hate to say it but one of the other stories in the last year that was a break out story was Ms. Travel. Try to package what you're doing in a really crazy way. I hacked together a crazy photosheet interface that I've never seen before and it just wouldn't catch. Trying to think of any other thing I could think of which nobody has done, I tried the idea of online dating via the unix command line. That did get me some exposure but certainly not enough to get the wheels of traction turning.

For what it's worth, here's a story that came out on Jezebel.com about my project at the time (which I shut off after a couple of weeks after this article came out).

jonthepirate··on Show HN: My seven minute workout timer evening project
I forwarded this program to my coworker when I saw it on HN yesterday. Now, I'm going to forward him this link... he refuses to go to the gym because he's too busy so hopefully this will help him kickstart some fitness in his life.
jonthepirate··on RethinkDB 1.5 released: secondary indexes, soft durability, perf improvements
Very cool.. I'm going to try this.
jonthepirate··on Show HN: Cross-browser asynchronous JS script loader w/callbacks

jonthepirate··on Ask HN: Looking for an apartment in San Fran. Can anyone help?
What's your budget? I'm looking to rent this place 100% furnished... I can give you a discount if you need it monthly or need to rent it for a year....

jonthepirate··on My weekend project: Motivate your team at the moment something good happens
I'm really not a designer at all so to the guys behind screen leap, just remember that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If this takes off, I'll hire a UI person. :)

jonthepirate··on Use Wayback Machine to get insights into A/B tests
I have also used wbm when I was trying to do an analysis of sites that are similar to the ones that I cook up every once in a while just to see what they had at launch.
jonthepirate··on I don't program in my spare time. Does that make me a bad developer?
Is there a site where programmers can post their side projects for the rest of us to look through? I am always working on a side-project... usually something built on Facebook platform. I'd love to see what you other hackers are working on in your spare time.
