jonpalmisc··on I built a receipt printer for GitHub issues
What’s the reason behind the inches vs millimeters distinction? I understand it’s just a heuristic but I don’t get what the underlying cause is.
jonpalmisc··on Writing a simple operating system from scratch (2010) [pdf]
This PDF brings back memories. I went down this path about a little over a year ago—it’s great fun. I didn’t end up finishing anything significant but I’d highly recommend everyone give writing a kernel or an OS a shot sometime. You will learn a whole lot.

If you’re interested, the OSDev Wiki [0] is a great place to start, as are Bran’s Kernel Development tutorials, which I can’t seem to find on mobile right now.

jonpalmisc··on Dum: An NPM scripts runner written in Rust
Slightly off topic: So many projects and posts boast “written in Rust”. I haven’t been on HN that long—was there a point in time where “written in C++” was a similar “selling point”?

From a quick glance, it looks like this could have been implemented in any native language. I like Rust as much as the next guy, but using it to get clicks when Rust specifically over another native language doesn’t make a difference feels a bit clickbaity.

jonpalmisc··on Lessons Learnt Moving a GTK Application from Go to Ada
I love doing UI programming in Pascal, but I miss sane build systems and package management from other languages when I use Lazarus or Delphi.

If Lazarus were more popular and had a better library ecosystem, I’d probably use it a lot more.

jonpalmisc··on Apple Music Cover Art Rules
I should clarify I’m talking about my artist profile picture, configured through artists.apple.com.
jonpalmisc··on Apple Music Cover Art Rules
When did you upload yours? I’ve attempted to upload non-face photos on multiple occasions now and had them all rejected.
jonpalmisc··on Apple Music Cover Art Rules
They also have profile photo rules, notably, that it must include your face.

I later found out that you cannot remove your profile photo, even upon request. Nor can I replace it with something other than my face.

Can’t say I’m a fan of that policy, for privacy reasons.

jonpalmisc··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (March 2022)
Not hiring—just a fellow HN reader—but your site is beautiful.
jonpalmisc··on Nvidia DLSS Source Code Leaked
To be abundantly clear: I'd hate to have my source code leaked.

But I will admit that incidents like these or the Windows XP source leak are fascinating. I'd hope others share the same curiosity I have for getting to "peek behind the scenes" of some impressive software and engineering accomplishments.

jonpalmisc··on Computer Programming with Nim
I’m always hesitant to start projects in less popular languages without knowing if they will stick around, etc. I don’t know much about Nim, but I have tons of respect for people who create excellent content like this that helps a language become more popular and mainstream by making it more accessible.
jonpalmisc··on Make Linux look like Windows 95
I’ve used this before and it’s quite good; it not only captures the “old Windows” look well, but I find it to be quite functional too.

I was frustrated trying to get my Linux box to look “pretty”, since I find that most GTK and DE themes lack attention to detail that is glaringly obvious to a trained eye. My solution was to take the “scorched Earth” approach: make my UI look as primitive as possible rather than aiming for perfection.

jonpalmisc··on Learn Rust by writing a small OS
It's not a tutorial series, but you may get something out of browsing the source for https://github.com/SerenityOS/serenity in the meantime. I'm also curious if there are any recent/relevant C++ OS development guides.
jonpalmisc··on Parallels Desktop Pro now sends spam notifications with ads to your desktop
bombcar’s reply is correct. Too late to edit my comment now, but the main thing I was praising is actually the Parallels graphics driver.
jonpalmisc··on Parallels Desktop Pro now sends spam notifications with ads to your desktop
UTM is good and I’m not the biggest Parallels fan, but Parallels is currently the only host with guest tools for Windows 11 ARM. While Windows 11 ARM can run in UTM and VMware, it’s a night/day difference in quality when using Parallels. I have to give credit where credit is due—I get 120 Hz, retina graphics in my Windows 11 ARM VM under Parallels on my M1 Pro.

That being said, I’m eagerly waiting for a viable alternative so I can ditch Parallels.

jonpalmisc··on Show HN: hue.tools – open-source toolbox for colors
Yup. This is my new favorite color tool website. Excellent work.
jonpalmisc··on MonoLisa – A font designed for developers
On the topic of fonts: If your font of choice has it, try using the medium weight as the "normal" weight in your editor — I've found I prefer it to the regular weight with most fonts. I started doing this after noticing that the default Xcode font is SF Mono Medium.
jonpalmisc··on Include diagrams in your Markdown files with Mermaid
There are definitely some JS libraries for it that exist. I don’t know all the details but I often find myself Googling “graphviz online” and clicking the first link to quickly mock up diagrams. So in short, I’ve used it on the web before.
jonpalmisc··on Include diagrams in your Markdown files with Mermaid
I think this is a good change. While I would have preferred to see support for Graphviz over Mermaid, I understand Mermaid was probably chosen for the sake of easier integration. Either way, it will be nice to be able to embed diagrams rather than constantly re-generate and re-commit images to the repo.
jonpalmisc··on Unikraft is a fast, secure and open-source Unikernel Development Kit
Anyone have experience using projects like this? Are the performance gains (and/or other benefits) that noticeable?
jonpalmisc··on My seatbelt rule for judgment
For those who just want to see the rule:

> My willingness to judge something should be proportional to how much I know about it.

I think it’s a sound rule. Going to try to remind myself of this more.

jonpalmisc··on Ask HN: How to begin learning assembler for university course?
If you already know C or C++, I’d recommend checking out Compiler Explorer [1]. It helped me tremendously when learning assembly as I could see how source code translated to assembly, which helped me learn common patterns in assembly, etc.

[1] https://godbolt.org/

Note: It supports more languages than C and C++, but with the exception of Zig, the others will typically have more complicated assembly output.

jonpalmisc··on Yuzu: Nintendo Switch Emulator
Do you have the links for those tweets by any chance? I’d like to learn more about this.
jonpalmisc··on Yuzu: Nintendo Switch Emulator
I would love to see a Switch emulator for the M1, although I certainly understand why it'd be a last-priority for emulator developers.

I know /nothing/ about emulator development, but I wonder what the performance of a Switch emulator written for the M1 using Metal for graphics would look like. I'd expect the Switch and the M1 both being ARM would be an advantage? Would be curious to learn more if anyone in this space wants to weigh in.

jonpalmisc··on The Dangers of Dimethylmercury (2019)
ChubbyEmu’s video [1] on this was quite good. (As is the rest of his channel, if this kind of stuff interests you.)

jonpalmisc··on Audio Sparklines
The integration with LLDB here seems really neat and makes me think about what other LLDB scripts could be made to improve debugging of common structures and data. It’s be neat to be able to visualize a tree, etc. in LLDB.
jonpalmisc··on WSL with CUDA support
I don’t use Windows anymore so I don’t really have any investment in WSL, but I’m happy to keep seeing things in the WSL camp get even better. I’d argue WSL is the single best Windows innovation in years.
jonpalmisc··on The Windows 11 taskbar is an annoying step backward
Cheap shot, but: just the taskbar?

Everyone likes to complain about privacy, telemetry, etc. in Windows. I’d rather have a Windows 7 with telemetry than Windows 11 with no telemetry. Every Windows release just becomes actively more annoying to use.

jonpalmisc··on Rat Tickling
Update: It's a good day to be a certified rat-tickler.

jonpalmisc··on Rat Tickling
> An online course created by Dr Megan LaFollette and colleagues (funded by AWI) allowing you to become certified in the correct rat tickling technique.

For anyone interested in getting certified:

This seems like it would certainly be a fun résumé item to have.
