jonkiddy··on Experts Still Think UBeam’s Through-The-Air Charging Tech Is Unlikely
Reminds me of an old April Fools joke from ThinkGeek: https://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/41/wec.shtml
jonkiddy··on UN delay could open door to robot wars
That was a terrific book. I highly recommend anything from Daniel Suarez.

jonkiddy··on Amazon Web Services in Plain English
I completely agree. It is a great name for the service.

jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Do you use a tablet?
I bought an iPad mini with cellular and enjoy it. I commute on the train and mainly use it for reading HN, Kindle, email.
jonkiddy··on How Zapier Went from Zero to 600k Users
I use IFTTT for non-work related personal tasks; mostly moving pictures around and some social media stuff. I use Zapier for business tasks.

The number one thing on my list when I was looking for a place of employment: no ties.
jonkiddy··on Tell HN: Proposal for next great leap in software developer productivity
Hypothesis: Whenever I'm unable to get to HN, I'm a 10x engineer (when compared to my usual self).
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: What Is Your Opinion of the Georgia Tech OMS CS?
Excellent point. The OMSCS program is entirely based on passing 10 courses in MOOC format. There isn't a research component or a thesis.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: What Is Your Opinion of the Georgia Tech OMS CS?
I'm a second year student in the OMSCS program. So far it has been an excellent experience. I graduated in 2002 with a degree in Computer Information Systems (basic programming). I feel that this particular program has begun to plug the holes in my previous education. I've never been this excited about learning in an academic setting, online or otherwise.

The first graduates of the program will receive their degree at the Fall 2015 semester; so it has yet to be seen how the degree will be perceived by the general academic community.

jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Hypothetically speaking: You're working on the biggest idea
Share your idea with anyone who will listen. A) If it is truly going to change the world, you'll be labeled a hero and will quickly gain support. B) If not, you'll know pretty quickly from the masses that it won't work. If you get shot down, you'll get feedback to where the holes are in your idea, which can only solidify your idea further. Execution counts. Ideas are a dime a dozen; even world changing ones.

At that point, I correctly answered the question.

jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Does anyone else feel stupid reading Hacker News?
I've been a software developer for nearly 11 years. That feeling is why I keep coming back to HN. And only lately did I realize that thankfully that feeling will never end.
jonkiddy··on SpaceX – Launch Vehicle Failure
I had my 3 kids watching along with me. Afterwards we had a healthy talk on how to approach failure.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Do you think its fair to charge for fixing bugs?
If you are doing freelance work, you could roll maintenance development/fixes into an ongoing support contract which includes a SLA and monthly fees.
jonkiddy··on Lumen – A micro-framework by Laravel
How is this different from Laravel Forge? https://forge.laravel.com/
jonkiddy··on Lumen – A micro-framework by Laravel
I completely agree. I've used Slim in lieu of Laravel for a number of small API projects. I'm excited about porting them over to Lumen.
jonkiddy··on Are master’s degrees on their way out? Alternatives grow as enrollment fades
I'm wrapping up my second semester this week in Georgia Tech's OMSCS program. It's fantastic. The courses are packed full of CS fundamentals, algorithms, data structures, etc. I finished my bachelor's in 2004 and find this MS program challenging probably due to being out of school for a decade.
jonkiddy··on Khan Academy: Algorithms
On a typical day, no I do not think about sorting algorithms in particular.

Generally speaking though, I do think about Big-O notation when writing something that isn't trivial. If I do have to implement some particular known algorithm, then I typically look to the language itself for a solution. Failing that I look for a suitable library, and only after exhausting those potential solutions do I write my own.
