jonkiddy··on Ask HN: When you feel stuck in life
A few thoughts immediately came to mind in regards to your post.

1. You are intelligent. (you finished your degree, considered several options, you are not making a brash decision, and you are seeking advice. All very positive and responsible things to do.)

2. You are looking for fulfillment in your education/work. (Find an occupation that supports you, your loved ones, and then find fulfillment outside of the 8-5.)

3. Your entire post is generally self seeking. (Find fulfillment in spending time with others, get in shape/fit, find someone that could use your help and enjoy their friendship, volunteer your time/expertise to a worthy cause, pick up a hobby that you always wanted to do. But the most important thing is to find others to enjoy your free time with.)

Edit/Comment: I agree with others, drugs/alcohol should be completely avoided.

jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Plagiarism on GitHub – What to do?
INAL. I'm not sure if there is much you can do. If you open sourced the project in such a way as another party can do what they want, we'll expect them to do whatever they want.
jonkiddy··on What do you guys think about my startup?
Why beacons and not a GPS/geofence system? Is there some advantage to using beacons I'm not familiar with?
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Plagiarism on GitHub – What to do?
Hanlon's razor. [0]

Assume that the person doesn't know how to correctly contribute code to an existing project. Reach out to them and gently let them know that they are welcome to contribute via Pull Requests. Also, be flattered that someone found value in your work. Assume that the other person simply doesn't know any better. If no response, or no change in a small period of time, then DMCA as mentioned in the other comment.

jonkiddy··on The Zen of Y Combinator
I'm not sure what you mean by "the wing part of the country". I haven't heard that colloquialism before.
jonkiddy··on Forestry.io
I had the same thought. I found this a moment ago.

Edit/Addendum: I think this is an interesting service. For what it's worth, I'd rather pay someone to host this type of content with a SLA of some sort.

jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Do people actually make money writing their own stock trading bots?
I built a rather simplistic bitcoin trading bot for myself a year or so ago using a hacked together exponential EMA script. Did ok, turned $2.5k to about $10k, paid off a car loan with the profits after tax. It was definitely a hobby and I'm pretty sure I was extremely lucky. It felt like I was playing with monopoly money at the time so there was no stress.

Also, this is interesting... https://www.udacity.com/course/machine-learning-for-trading-...

I'm not a fan of running either, but I love to play soccer.
jonkiddy··on Is there an existing “Stack” for getting into robotics?
I'm a web developer who got the bug to get into robotics about four years ago as a hobby. I ended up joining a FIRST [1] robotics team as a programming mentor and I've learned a lot [2].

jonkiddy··on Head of StartUp NY leaving as jobs report is two months late
The article lists 172 companies with 4000+ jobs promised over the next five years. 76 jobs created in 2014.

The program's website [1] lists 157 companies and 4,278 new jobs. The missing job report for 2015 is two months late.

I took that course a year ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Writing an AI agent to take IQ tests was a rewarding experience.

I'm sure I asked/answered more than a dozen questions during that semester within the Piazza platform and likely unknowingly contributed to Jill Watson's training.

jonkiddy··on Sebastian Thrun Steps Down as Udacity's CEO
I'm also a Georgia Tech OMSCS student. I'm really enjoying the program.

I found Udacity/Piazza to be adequate as a student while using my laptop. However, my wish is for the OMSCS program to embrace mobile as a viable method of consuming course content. Which isn't the case currently and rather disappointing as I travel quite a bit.

jonkiddy··on Ask HN: What are you using to keep your technical notes?
Me too. Moleskine all the way.

This is my third year as a volunteer mentor for a local FRC team since the team's founding. Also, it is our third year headed to St. Louis (FIRST Championships). Our team is run out of an elite private school. We participate in multiple regionals and money has never been a problem. I'm sure the easy access to money is a contributing factor for our continued success.

I'm aware of another local team which is setup as a 501c3 and physically runs out of a public school. This particular team is heavily supported by a local mechanical engineering firm with both money and a team of mechanical engineering mentors.

I'm an American. The use of "table" in colloquialisms while participating in meetings has many different distinctions/meanings.

"let's put it all on the table" - I would like for you and I to be completely honest with each other, even if I don't like what you are about to say.

"let's table that" - I would like for you to remember what you wanted to say, but please don't say it now. Also, talk to me later in a separate discussion if what you wanted to say is still relevant.

"it's off the table" - That particular item/thought is no longer relevant to the discussion, please ignore it.

"clear the table" - Please get ready to discuss something entirely new of a higher priority. Or, I would like to start the same discussion over, but this time I have a better understanding of what I would like to communicate.

jonkiddy··on Ask HN: So how does this whole investment thing work?
I think you should take a look at the How to Start a Startup video series. And particularly Lecture 9 - How to Raise Money might be helpful.

115k reservations in 24 hours. $115m. That is an excellent first day. Assuming there aren't many cancelations, ~$4B+ total by 4Q 2016. Very nice. However, I don't think the hype matched the presentation.
jonkiddy··on That awkward moment when Apple mocked good hardware and poor people
"nothing about today’s iPad Pro presentation made me rethink my position at all"

This is the only part of the article that resonated with me. Apple completely failed to provide any viable reason for 600m+ PC users to switch to an iPad Pro.

jonkiddy··on iPhone SE
Agreed. My 5S broke over winter, 4.7" was too big as a replacement. I tested a 6 in my jeans pocket and it felt odd to me. I immediately purchased another 5S instead.

Looking forward to a SE.

jonkiddy··on Researchers say Disney/Pixar movies underrepresent poor/minimize hardships
Disney's core product is fiction. Fiction in the form of entertainment. Entertainment that distracts from the realities of life.

__fiction__ noun. Literature/media in the form of prose, especially short stories and novels, that describes imaginary events and people.

jonkiddy··on Why Don't People Manage Debt Better?
I have also read and successfully applied Dave Ramsey's debt snowball method (suboptimal yet effective). While I was reading the article, it confirmed to me that Dave Ramsey's method falls in line with a large portion of the general public's tendencies. No wonder he is so successful, he has a large market already psychologically primed to believe and apply his method.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: What do you do in your free time?
I suggest something unrelated to programming. Ski, hike, etc. As for me, doing anything physical has generally made me happy about life which in turn has made me a better programmer.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: How many LLCs for my different ventures?
One LLC and pick only one of the above. Focus.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: How do you find a decent PHP developer?
I certainly don't fully understand your relationship with your customer(s). However, in the recent past I have raised my rates with existing clients by 50% with zero complaints. And if they expect you to find other programmers to accomplish additional work, your increase rate can be attributed to "management" fees.

I had the whole family watch. They'll remember this moment for a long time to come. Well done!
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: How do you find a decent PHP developer?
If you are getting unlimited work at $60, I suggest that you up your rates.
jonkiddy··on This Is Not a Day Care. It’s a University
I think there is some irony in the title/content of that post and a particular verse in 1 Cor 13 (which was the referenced cause of the issue).

"When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me." 1 Cor 13:11

jonkiddy··on Ask HN: How best to break up with cofounder?
At this point, it sounds like you are leaving the company. There should be provisions for doing so in your company's organizational document.

However, if the company hasn't made much money and doesn't have any customers, then there is virtually no brand/identity and the IP is nearly worthless. Your goal now should be to avoid being liable for the company's debt and documenting a clean break while leaving on good terms. This will allow your cofounder(s) to continue on if they wish to do so while leaving you in the clear to pursue other interests.

If I were you I'd sign a document giving all IP and rights/equity you may have had back to the company and walk away. Hire a lawyer first before doing so to verify that you are in the clear.

I'd write off the time you put into the startup and consider the effort you put in as an educational investment in yourself. And congrats!, you just walked away from your first failed startup, I hope you learn from it and get back on the horse asap.
