jonkiddy··on Preparing for Malicious Uses of AI
This made me think of a riddle I once heard recently from a high school student. "What is sexually transmitted, 100% fatal, and literally everyone you know is infected? ...Life."
jonkiddy··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launches
A truly historic moment. Well done SpaceX!
jonkiddy··on How I Shipped Six Side Projects in 2017
I don't know how to respond to your comment. I'm sorry to hear about your wife. After I hit "reply", I'm going to turn this laptop off and go downstairs and give my wife a hug.
jonkiddy··on Cryptocurrency Analysis with Python – Buy and Hold
It isn't clear to me why technical indicators aren't viable.
jonkiddy··on Recommendations for where to earn my comp sic degree online
If you already have a degree and are looking for a MS in CS you'll be hard pressed to find a better program than OMSCS from Georgia Tech. http://www.omscs.gatech.edu/program-info/admission-criteria
jonkiddy··on California updates laws around salary and criminal histories of job applicants
I believe that is still functionally equivalent to Group 3.
jonkiddy··on Second Undergraduate/Masters Degree in CS
Once finished you will have the perfect combination of skills for the robotics industry and probably many others. Ironically, I've actually thought about pursuing a mechanical engineering degree after my CS Masters.
jonkiddy··on Top products (non-tech) you use everyday and wouldn’t compromise on quality?
Pillow. I spend 1/3 of my life on one.
jonkiddy··on Slack is offline
You're not alone. I had the same thought.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Fellow Engineers – What motivates you to go into work?
I think the best part of this post, at least for me, is that I had no idea who Daniel Pink was until a moment ago. This is why I stick around on HN. Thanks!
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: One word answer – React or Vue?
Vue.
jonkiddy··on Cassini's Saturn Mission Goes Out in a Blaze of Glory
Blue dropdown menu on the left side under the main graphic.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Does one feel they are contributing positively to society?
Yes. My job is to automate tasks at a cancer research institution.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Where do I find a robotics consultant?
I have a friend that does this. I'll reach out to him. We're in Buffalo, NY. In the meantime contact me at jon kiddy at gmail and I'll see if I can introduce the two of you.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Would you be interested in an Intro to Sales bootcamp?
Provide an online option and I'm in.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: What habits make a programmer great?
I hate printers. I haven't used one in months. However, I just printed this comment and I'm hanging it up in my office. Perfect.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Where can I purchase an Saas or App?
Have you checked out FE International?

jonkiddy··on Ask HN: Parents, what are your favorite resources for teaching your kids tech
code.org scratch.mit.edu

I once jokingly told my eight year old kid that he can play video games whenever he wants as long as he has made it himself. Now he's all in. I may come to regret this decision. It is all he wants to do now.

jonkiddy··on Science Fiction Interfaces
I know this doesn't apply to your needs, however OSX/macOS has the ability to "Invert Display Color" and I use it all the time for precisely the use case you described.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: How has volunteering helped you grow?
I volunteer as a FIRST robotics mentor, specifically as a programming mentor. I find it incredibly rewarding to see students go from zero to programming hero (from their teammates' perspective). Also, as a web developer, I like the challenge of writing code for a robot.
jonkiddy··on Where to sell a website that makes $4,000/month
I have no experience in these maters but I'm fond of FE International [0].

jonkiddy··on How I got my dream job in the tech industry without a CS degree
I believe that the general public does not understand the term computer science. I also don't believe that any CS grad is better off in the job market as a result of the courses taken, but rather is only highly sought after as a job candidate because of the degree's title. I often wonder if HR/hiring-managers will eventual wake up to the fact that a large part of the work that is typically required for such jobs can be accomplished by any dedicated individual willing to put in the time building a portfolio (aka ~10,000 hours) and then learn on the job.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: One week off before new job. What should I learn?
I recommend you spend the majority of your new found free time away from a desk. Then you'll gain perspective as a newly minted manager regarding the human element of software development.

That being said, Rework by J.F./DHH is fantastic.

jonkiddy··on Georgia Tech Offers Online Master of Science in Analytics Degree for Under $10K
I'm currently seven classes into the OMSCS program (one class per semester since 2014), work full time, volunteer as a FIRST robotics mentor, and have three kids and a loving wife. I have no free time and life is good. However, if my wife wasn't onboard and encouraging me to go through the OMSCS program, I wouldn't be able to do so.
jonkiddy··on Ask HN: What are the bibles of Computer Science?
The Pragmatic Programmer from Andrew Hunt. Very informative book. It is a book filled with opinions/tips from experienced programmers, some of which apply and some don't. The ones that do are invaluable.
jonkiddy··on Best usb-c dock for the new macbook pro?
I found one with most of the features you listed. http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F4U095/
jonkiddy··on Tesla ‘Easter Egg’ Makes the Fast-Accelerating Model S Even Faster
If I remember correctly, there is a scene in the book Daemon by Daniel Suarez where autonomous cars are used similarly.
jonkiddy··on You Are Not Paid to Write Code
I'm paid to kill jobs. I meet with a group of internal customers to ask/watch/learn what they do. Then automate the business tasks so that one person can do the job of the entire group more effectively than before. Then provide pretty charts to the managers as they "downsize" their groups.
jonkiddy··on Introducing “Ask a Female Engineer”
There is a difference between "water cooler/coffee" as compared to going to a "coffee shop". When I read the article I thought "water cooler/coffee".

I'm regularly asked to "go get a cup of coffee" which is a two-minute walk down the hall to the Keurig machine and we end up talking about family, sports, etc. If another colleague were present, I would have no problem asking a female colleague if they wanted to "get a coffee" with us. For me it would be socially awkward if it were 1-on-1. And I wouldn't dare ask a female colleague to a coffee shop.

jonkiddy··on Ask HN: How did you get started with automated stock trading?
Have you checked out https://www.quantopian.com? It is a fun platform to mess around with and get your feet wet with automated trading.

Edit/Addendum: I noticed they allow live trading after connecting your account with either Interactive Brokers or Robinhood.
