jonbiggums22··on Nvidia buys $5B in Intel
ALi was indeed pretty much on the avoid list for me for most of their history. It was only when they came out with the ULi M1695 made famous by the Asrock939dual-sata2 that they were a contender for best out of nowhere. One of the coolest boards I ever owned and was rock solid for me even with all of the weird configs I ran on it. I kind of wish I hadn't sold it even today!

I remember a lot disappointed people on forums who couldn't upgrade their cheap PCs as well, but there were still motherboards available with AGP to slot into for Intel's best products. Intel couldn't just remove it from the landscape altogether (assuming they wanted to) because they weren't the only company making Intel supporting chipsets. IIRC Intel/AMD/Nvidia were not interested in making AGP+PCIe supporting chipsets at all, but VIA/ALi and maybe SiS made them instead because it was a free for all space still. Once that went away Nvidia couldn't control their own destiny.

jonbiggums22··on Samsung confirms its smart fridges will start showing you ads
More likely they'll identify you as having a weakness for junk food using your image and fridge contents and show an ad for cheezy blasters every time you walk by the fridge.
jonbiggums22··on Nvidia buys $5B in Intel
I think it is bad news for the GPU market (AMD has had a beachhead with their integrated solution here as they've lost out elsewhere) but good for x86 which I've worried would be greatly diminished as Intel became less competitive.
jonbiggums22··on Nvidia buys $5B in Intel
Way back in the mid-late 2000s Intel CPUs could be used with third party chipsets not manufactured by Intel. This had been going on forever but the space was particularly wild with Nvidia being the most popular chipset manufacturer for AMD and also making in-roads for Intel CPUs. It was an important enough market than when ALi introduced AMD chipsets that were better than Nvidia's they promptly bought the company and spun down operations.

This was all for naught as AMD purchased ATi, shutting out all other chipsets and Intel did the same. Things actually looked pretty grim for Nvidia at this point in time. AMD was making moves that suggested APUs were the future and Intel started releasing platforms with very little PCIe connectivity, prompting Nvidia to build things like the Ion platform that could operate over an anemic pcie 1x link. There were really were the beginnings of strategic moves to lock Nvidia out of their own market.

Fortunately, Nvidia won a lawsuit against Intel that required them to have pcie 16x connectivity on their main platforms for 10 years or so and AMD put out non-competitive offerings in the CPU space such that the APU take off never happened. If Intel had actually developed their integrated GPUs or won that lawsuit or if AMD had actually executed Nvidia might well be an also-ran right around now.

To their credit, Nvidia really took advantage of their competitors inability to press their huge strategic advantage during that time. I think we're in a different landscape at the moment. Neither AMD nor Intel can afford boot Nvidia since consumers would likely abandon them for whoever could still slot in an Nvidia card. High performance graphics is the domain of add-in boards now and will be for awhile. Process node shrinks aren't as easy and cooling solutions are getting crazy.

But Nvidia has been shut out of the new handheld market and haven't been a good total package for consoles as SoC both rule the day in those spaces so I'm not super surprised at the desire for this pairing. But I did think nvidia had given up these ambitions was planning to try to build an adjacent ARM based platform as a potential escape hatch.

jonbiggums22··on Samsung 870 QVO 4TB SATA SSD-s: how are they doing after 4 years of use?
Most companies seem to well on the way for SATA drives in general. There aren't many non-garbage tier options available anymore. I keep ending up buying 870 EVOs even though I don't really love them.
jonbiggums22··on Europe is locking itself in to US LNG
What difference does it make? Trump will re-neg on the agreement even if they actually did it.
jonbiggums22··on PayPal to support Ethereum and Bitcoin
I assume you can't use Crypto instead of the bank account link, you probably require both. Otherwise this might have some use as another blast radius reducer for Paypal's antics.

I switched to a hardly used checking account for paypal after they held $20 hostage for a couple months after selling an old video card on ebay. I'd heard some one say their bank account had become frozen by paypal during a dispute and that event reminded me of it enough to get some separation.

jonbiggums22··on Eye drops could replace glasses or surgery for longsightedness, study says
A similar thing happened to me in my mid-40s. I had been fortunate to have "perfect" vision until suddenly I was complaining about the tiny fonts on labels and started struggling doing small wiring tasks. It wasn't a surprise really, my mother had the best vision in my family and she eventually needed reading glasses. But how suddenly it came on surprised me, although maybe I had actually been compensating all along until I couldn't anymore.
jonbiggums22··on Danish supermarket chain is setting up "Emergency Stores"
But the reason people do this is also food waste. If the food expires at my house it still goes in the garbage, the only difference is I'm also the one that got stuck paying for it. It isn't like there's a discount based on the expiration date.
jonbiggums22··on TikTok has turned culture into a feedback loop of impulse and machine learning
I thought the kept incentivizing longer content so they could cram more ads into the videos. Hard to get some one to watch a 20 second ad for a 2 minute video, but if you can convince everyone to pad that thing up to 10 minutes you could stuff at least 2 ads in there.
jonbiggums22··on TikTok has turned culture into a feedback loop of impulse and machine learning
I wish they'd give you more than 2x speed in the web player. Lots of videos seem to talk extra slowly to drag things out to the point 2x speed sounds like normal conversational speed.
jonbiggums22··on Homeowners insurance is pricing people out in disaster-prone cities
What makes you think they won't be bailed out by creating a national subsidized insurance program? The national flood insurance program only exists because insurance companies didn't consider insuring properties that are destroyed by flood all the time a good idea and stopped doing it altogether.
jonbiggums22··on iPhone dumbphone
If this happens to me I'm buying the cheapest android I can find and just attaching it to my work laptop with adhesive.
jonbiggums22··on iPhone dumbphone
I've done this as well. My employers setup guide was super long winded and tried hard to suggest MS Authenticator was the only one that would work without outright saying it.

However, I've gathered that this is a setting that is up to the organization so your YMMV. Since some employees work at secure sites without wifi/mobile connections they aren't able to turn off TOTP.

jonbiggums22··on AMD claims Arm ISA doesn't offer efficiency advantage over x86
IIRC Intel hobbled early Atom with an ancient process node for the chipsets which actually made up most of the idle power usage. It was pretty clear that both Microsoft and Intel wanted this product category to go away or at least be totally relegated to bottom tier lest it cannibalize their higher margin businesses. And then of course Apple and Android came along and did just that anyway.
jonbiggums22··on I am giving up on Intel and have bought an AMD Ryzen 9950X3D
XMP is technically overclocking, nothing inherently safe about it. I've had new dual channel kits fail memtest at XMP settings on Ryzen, it seemed to depend almost entirely on what the individual CPUs memory controller was capable of.

Maybe the situation is better on DDR5 platforms.

jonbiggums22··on I am giving up on Intel and have bought an AMD Ryzen 9950X3D
Their APUs don't have the problem from the reviews I've seen, but yes the I/O die has been the bane of the Zen platform when it comes to idle power consumption.

To make matters worse, the x570 chipset basically runs this I/O die upside down as a chipset and sucks twice as much power at idle as the x470 chipset it replaced. I expected them to replace this hack of a product used for the high end when Asmedia's efforts were delayed but all that platform got was B550. It was pretty clear they weren't chasing this part of the market during AM4's heydey, no real idea where they are at now with chipsets on AM5. But given few people talked about how crappy that chipset was in this respect I guess they might be right it wasn't important to most people.

jonbiggums22··on I am giving up on Intel and have bought an AMD Ryzen 9950X3D
I haven't moved on from AM4 yet but the way XMP is advertised you'd think it was guaranteed instead of overclocking that technically voids your warranty.
jonbiggums22··on Taco Bell AI Drive-Thru
What is the deal with trapping you in anyway?
jonbiggums22··on Taco Bell AI Drive-Thru
McDonald's around here have designated wait spaces with numbers. I've had them direct me out of line and an employee then brings the bag out to me when it is ready. So they do seem to have solved that problem.
jonbiggums22··on GigaByte CXL memory expansion card with up to 512GB DRAM
Are these the same thing though? I have a fondness for novel hardware and the idea of using up old ram standards to create a fast ram disk is interesting to me. But the CXL card seems to require motherboard/platform support whereas these older ram drives just showed up as a disk.
jonbiggums22··on Making the most of a dumb fax switcher box in the old days
Back in the dial-up days once call waiting was introduced you were routinely instructed to disable it. I had a box sort of like the fax switcher that I purchased on ebay that would instead listen for the call waiting tone and the box itself would ring, allowing me to pick up the phone attached to the box and receive the calls. It solved the problem of being able to use the phone line for hours on end for internet downloads without losing the ability to actually receive calls.

I also found if I identified a spam call fast enough I could hang up and switch back to the dial-up connection before it was dropped. I had to be real quick but I could usually avoid being dropped from a Starcraft match.

jonbiggums22··on AI adoption linked to 13% decline in jobs for young U.S. workers: study
Many "productivity improvements" in the modern era are just externalizing the problem. It's like saying I automated recycling by dumping all my unsorted stuff in my neighbors bin.
jonbiggums22··on Connecting M.2 drives to various things (and not doing so)
I don't believe this is true. Something like thunderbolt could allow this but the cheap commonly available ones "simply" appear as a USB disk and can't use any of the NVMe specific features like HMB, can't be secure erased with nvme-cli, etc. Lack of HMB support is a particularly painful limitation these days as dram isn't available on most new drives.
jonbiggums22··on Home Depot sued for 'secretly' using facial recognition at self-checkouts
Why am I waiting in line to check myself out? That is what drives me nuts. "But they take up space" you say. There's lots of wasted space with the 8 standard checkout lines that are unmanned every time I come in the store.
jonbiggums22··on Intel Foundry demonstrates first Arm-based chip on 18a node
It would be bad for x86 in general if Intel just disappears. They supply a ton of chips for businesses still and TSMC isn't going to replace that overnight.
jonbiggums22··on Tiny, removable "mini SSD" could eventually be a big deal for gaming handhelds
I blundered onto this when looking for a way to swap out m.2 SSDs without opening my case. There are apparently adapters for an m.2 drive to be used in a CFexpress slot. When looking at prices for regular CFexpress cards it seemed like everyone should use the adapters since m.2 drives were so much cheaper, at least when I was shopping.
