jonathanpoulter··on From Julian to Gregorian Calendar
Is this a spoiler for the novel?
jonathanpoulter··on Can a Living Creature Be as Big as a Galaxy?
That's a bit interesting, what WOULD you do to model this?
jonathanpoulter··on Fireflies
After the point when the whole swarm is synchronised there seems to be no further nudging, does this make sense? Am I missing something? Very interesting, just not sure I understand.
jonathanpoulter··on The largest Git repo
An internal tool which manages commits, between individual repos etc. does it not seem that this is a logical extension to git itself? A little like submodules, but being able to publish only parts of the sourcetree. Maybe it would be impossible to keep any consistency and leaking information from the rest of the tree.
jonathanpoulter··on The largest Git repo
How does a mono-repo company manage open sourcing a single part of their infrastructure if things are in one large repo? For example, if everything lived in one repo, how does Facebook manage open sourcing React? Or if I personally wanted to switch to one private mono-repo, how would I share individual projects easily?

What impact does Google's Tensor Processing Unit have on the answer to this question?
jonathanpoulter··on Ask HN: What's your working day like?
Some of these posts are very interesting, it makes me think there would be value in defining what you would like to be able to post (how you want your day to look) and make changes to achieve that. Likely that would identify manageable and achievable goals, which are worthwhile to you.
jonathanpoulter··on Google Earth Redesigned
Could they presumably write it as a non-native app? Would there be any issues with that? Presumably the "chrome" around a webpage isn't particularly intensive?
jonathanpoulter··on Charging for Digit
I ended up emailing their support and their response included: "We are now working to run a business and we didn't want to build revenue on selling customer data or cluster your experience you with ads. We want to build a business on transparency.

We're finance hackers that see the overwhelming pile of crap that exists in the world of consumer finance and have taken up arms to improve the status quo through better software and better customer experiences; which will lead in our calculations to a financially healthier population. "

Actually pretty convincing, strong stuff

Your use of the word compositional is still a little confusing to me. Cool cat though...
jonathanpoulter··on Jupyter Notebook 5.0
Some widgets are pretty advanced, I saw a presentation by a developer from Bloomberg, in NYC, about their bqplot widget library.

https://github.com/bloomberg/bqplot

They even have gamepad/controller support, which allows dynamic interactions with widgets.

Edit: Live demo of the project from PyData London 2016: https://youtu.be/eVET9IYgbao?t=27m45s

jonathanpoulter··on Run Unix processes inside your browser
Thanks, this is super exciting. It really could push LaTeX on the web. In my opinion, this solves the problem I feel similar to every attempt to implement Vim keybindings has, what features of the original to implement (everyone wants something different), slight bugs or limitations which aren't at first apparent.

This is exactly what I was thinking, the most advanced LaTeX typesetter is probably mathjax, but it can't and probably won't [1] handle full LaTeX. Just consider this pretty simple LaTeX,

  \begin{align}
    x &= 2^2
    \intertext{so we can simplify}
      &= 4
  \end{align}
With a little bit of fanciness (sourcing the .sty sheets) behind the scenes, this could faithfully reproduce LaTeX.

Edit: formatting

jonathanpoulter··on Pendulum – Python datetimes made easy
That doesn't seem like a terrible dependency, is that the only reason?
jonathanpoulter··on Pendulum – Python datetimes made easy
I also really like the Timestamp class, are the obvious reasons not to use it?
jonathanpoulter··on JupyterLab: the next generation of the Jupyter Notebook
Cell magics just seem like one possible method of choosing which language to use, a menu such as what beaker uses seems alright too. I was setting up cling (the C++ kernel) today and I gave up at realising that the interpreter is spun up in a subprocess, rather than a kernel persisted across cells. Without cross cell support, mixing languages is a limited feature of jupyter.

Me too, anyone know why this is a thing? Such a common twitch... does it help reading?
jonathanpoulter··on Strategic Scala Style: Principle of Least Power
Some useful advice, even to someone not writing in Scala, especially sections like published interfaces.

> When defining an interface to a package someone else will use...

> 1. The simplest interface to a package is static method with standard types

> 2. Next, static methods that take/return custom types, presumably with methods

> 3. Next, is needing the user to instantiate some classes

> 4. Lastly, is needing the user to inherit from some classes

jonathanpoulter··on An unexpected benefit of open-sourcing our code
That would probably be a longer term social benefit, increased safety. Probably a short term social catastrophe.
