jonathannorris··on YC at Hack the North
Its a great name for a Hackathon, our country is north of the US, in the northern hemipshere, our national anthem states: "true north strong and free", deal with it.
jonathannorris··on Energy
It's great to see you invest your time and money in nuclear power Sam. We already have the nuclear technology to solve our energy emissions problem, we just lack the political will to make the shift away from coal/oil/gas. Great leaps in the efficiency and safety of nuclear power systems will hopefully make the shift politically achievable.
jonathannorris··on Y Combinator growth equity fund?
I'm assuming this is for larger/later rounds so that YC can invest in their very successful companies (think Airbnb and Dropbox), and not for Series A/B companies.
jonathannorris··on Canadian Early-Stage Fund with Investment Decisions in 48hrs
Canadian VC's have a terrible habit of stringing along founders for months to try and gather more info/data on the companies and never giving a firm answer. It is one of the most destructive forces possible, it causes Founders to waste months chasing money when they should be building their product/teams, I've seen it kill many good companies with great founders who should have been given a chance to build a team/product, not chase money for months. Hopefully this fund will force Canadian VC's move faster, as long as there aren't any landmines in the terms... But with the government money invested I worry about the terms.
jonathannorris··on JXCore – A Multithreaded Node.js Fork
Can't you just do this yourself with the clustering already built into Node... you can manage the clustering yourself http://nodejs.org/api/cluster.html, or use a tool like pm2 to manage your cluster for you https://github.com/Unitech/pm2.
jonathannorris··on DNSimple DDOS Attack
We are having Cloudflare issues right now... https://www.cloudflarestatus.com/
jonathannorris··on Lenovo to buy Google's Motorola handset division
I believe Motorola also had $3B in cash when acquired.
jonathannorris··on Show HN: Taplytics, A/B testing on iOS without App Store updates
We can change any native UIKit Class property using our sub-classes or categories. Currently, we are keeping it simple on the web interface to content and layout changes, but we also support more complex experiments like controlling view flows. Currently we have limited the interface to a single language, but multiple language support is built into the SDK/API and we will be publicly releasing it in the near future!
jonathannorris··on Show HN: Taplytics, A/B testing on iOS without App Store updates
Testing on mobile is becoming more common as the platforms mature, and critical to the success to many mobile apps including: Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

With Taplytics, because we use native iOS elements (no HTML wrappers), we are not modifying your packaged code just adjusting properties on the fly. All of your code still gets reviewed by Apple.

Thanks for your interest! I'm one of the co-founders of Taplytics.

Building for iOS in general has improved a lot. Apple has really cleaned up iOS and Xcode in the last two years, with ARC being a huge improvement for developers. Seeing that iOS 6+ is now 97.7% of devices (https://mixpanel.com/trends/#report/ios_7), we feel that focusing on iOS 6+ is a safe bet going forward.

jonathannorris··on Google acquires BufferBox (YC S12)
Congrats to the BufferBox team!
jonathannorris··on Under the hood: Rebuilding Facebook for iOS
pretty much every iOS app uses multi-threading (if they don't they should). GDC makes it pretty easy to implement, its defiantly not over-engineering. I highly recommend any new iOS programer to learn GDC when building their first app.
jonathannorris··on Under the hood: Rebuilding Facebook for iOS
multi-threading is a must for every iOS app. If you are building a fully single threaded iOS you are going to have a bad time.
