jonasvp··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2013)
(Writing in German, as at least basic competency in German is required)

Berlin-Kreuzberg, Germany

jonasvp··on TEDx talks discredited: Sheldrake speaks, argues that speed of light is dropping
Have you heard anything about Sheldrake apart from this blog post? For every one of his hypothesis he provides experiments to test and falsify them.

The problem is that he's already condemned for drawing the "wrong" conclusions so every scientist who even goes near his ideas and tries to test them is ostracized.

jonasvp··on TEDx talks discredited: Sheldrake speaks, argues that speed of light is dropping
This won't be a popular opinion around here but I've read quite a bit of Sheldrake's works and they strike me as very lucid. He's a scientist to the bone.

However, his findings go against many current scientific theories. This should be an opportunity for intellectual debate. I don't understand why many people think it's heresy to come to different conclusions about how the world works.

The editor of "Nature" actually called for his books to be burned. It's quite disheartening to see how a bit part of current "science" (including some internet mobs) has turned into a new version of the church that condemned Galileo.

jonasvp··on Some Internet Archive employees to receive some of their pay in Bitcoin in April
In general, I completely agree (though I have never seen it happen before). This is not a link, however, but a bitcoin address encoded as a QR code.

I - as do many others - have a Bitcoin wallet application with some change on my phone. Having the QR code here makes it easier to contribute something.

jonasvp··on Getting started with Salt: a Puppet/Chef alternative built in Python on ZeroMQ
We've started using Salt for configuration management and it's everything we'd hoped for. It took some time to get our state tree figured out but now it works like a charm.
jonasvp··on Show HN: Stop asking your clients "What browser are you on?"
Thanks for the kind words! The pricing is obviously geared towards agencies, not freelancers. We'll see how it pans out, your feedback is greatly appreciated!
jonasvp··on Show HN: Stop asking your clients "What browser are you on?"
Tricky one. I don't think there's any way to solve that, other than creating certificates for every CNAME - which is too expensive and complicated for your clients.

I've run into this with Campaign Monitor and they simply don't do SSL for CNAMEs. Since they do everything else perfectly, I'm assuming there's no way to solve this problem.

jonasvp··on Show HN: Stop asking your clients "What browser are you on?"
Right, that's when the "multiple recipients" come into play. You alone probably won't be on the phone with multiple clients.
jonasvp··on Show HN: Stop asking your clients "What browser are you on?"
Thanks! CNAMEs are supported in the Pro version you can upgrade to. Previous visits are remembered, you can access all the data from your control panel or click the permalink in the e-mail you receive on new visits.
jonasvp··on Show HN: Stop asking your clients "What browser are you on?"
I've noticed that screenshots (a la https://browsershots.org/) don't really help either as there's no way to debug - you'd change something and need another screenshot to see what happened. I guess we'll have to integrate http://browserstack.com (which is an incredible service).
jonasvp··on Show HN: Stop asking your clients "What browser are you on?"
Definitely, support-details.com was the inspiration. However, we didn't want to send our clients to some other site - we needed a branded version.

As for identifying users: you can add multiple recipients in case there are several people in your organisation using it.

We figure that you'll mostly have your client on the phone or are sending an email and expect an answer within minutes - so you know who it was. In the future, we might add a "Subject" line.

jonasvp··on Show HN: Stop asking your clients "What browser are you on?"
We semi-launched with a comment here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4499937

Just finished the Pro version and launched for real, would love some feedback from HN!

jonasvp··on Command Line Accounting With Ledger and Reckon
Hadn't thought about it yet, since it's pretty tied to our workflow. The web interface itself is pretty basic CRUD.

Thinking about it now, it does tie together some interesting parts. I'll clean it up a little and put it out there as soon as I have some time. If anyone's interested in it at the state it's in now, just give me a shout.

jonasvp··on Command Line Accounting With Ledger and Reckon
Ledger is beautiful. I actually wrote a web frontend (Django) for our company. It downloads the transaction history using aqbanking which implements the HBCI protocol (a german standard for accessing banks). My colleague then assigns accounts to each transaction.

It's given us a much better and more current view of where we are financially. We can actually display our runway on our Geckoboard dashboard in the office!

Next step: use D3.js to create monthly reports you can really drill down through.

jonasvp··on Prison May Be the Next Stop on a Gold Currency Journey
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gresham%27s_law

"When a government compulsorily overvalues one type of money and undervalues another, the undervalued money will leave the country or disappear from circulation into hoards, while the overvalued money will flood into circulation."

Or in other words (from the same article): "Bad money drives out good if their exchange rate is set by law."

jonasvp··on Prison May Be the Next Stop on a Gold Currency Journey
This is a misunderstanding of Gresham's law which only applies for multiple currencies that are nominally of the same value. Meaning, if there is a $1 silver coin and $1 gold coin, everybody would be hoarding the gold coin and "getting rid of" the silver coin.

Also, a currency is not something you hoard, it's something you "get rid of" by giving it to someone else in return for goods and services. In your example, the "weak" currency would become the standard medium of exchange, while the "strong" currency would for all practical purposes disappear from circulation.

jonasvp··on Ask HN: Which DRM-free ebook reader to buy?
I'm very happy with my Pocketbook Touch (http://www.pocketbook-int.com/us/products/pocketbook-touch). It seems quite hackable, the vendor is responsive (some employees hang out on www.mobileread.com pretty regularly). The touchscreen works well and the buttons for paging are great.

I've bought one or two books off Amazon and used de De-DRM tools available to put them on there, though it even supports the Adobe DRM (not Amazon's, though). It does have some annoyances but I haven't hit any major snags in several months of use.

jonasvp··on Show HN: We got tired of asking 'What browser are you using?' and created this
Thanks and good idea about the setter link. We offer something similar in that every recipient has a unique link: http://subdomain.browser-details.com/?r=2

Using this link makes "Send details" pop up immediately on opening. All the receiver has to do is click "Send".

jonasvp··on Show HN: We got tired of asking 'What browser are you using?' and created this
Thanks for the kind words and sorry to the OP for hijacking this thread. I was really just floored by the coincidence...

Great suggestion, by the way! I added this feature so now adding "www." will go to the subdomain as well.

jonasvp··on Show HN: We got tired of asking 'What browser are you using?' and created this
You're right, it should be window size. Fixed it accordingly.
jonasvp··on Show HN: We got tired of asking 'What browser are you using?' and created this
Sure! We're using http://user-agent-string.info/

I didn't feel up to doing the parsing myself...

jonasvp··on Show HN: We got tired of asking 'What browser are you using?' and created this
Wow, talk about synchronicity... I put up our site doing the exact same thing last night! Design-wise you're definitely ahead, however. :-)

Our version is at http://www.browser-details.com. When you sign up you get your own subdomain - or you define a CNAME under your own domain [premium]. You can upload your logo, define a list of recipients, and your clients can send the browser details directly to one of those recipients/departments.

We still need to change the color scheme (I wanted to launch at the end of the week, so it's straight Bootstrap for now) and finish the translation to German. Also: Premium version!

Feel free to be a beta tester! Also: all the best to the OP, great idea! ;-)

jonasvp··on Dropbox Can Now Automatically Sync Your Android Photos
Whoops, bad news for Syncly (http://www.syncly.de/) - does exactly that.
jonasvp··on The Greatest Running Shoe Never Sold
Funny, that's actually what I thought this article was about. Who gets excited about another "normal" running shoe anymore? I bought my Vibram FiveFingers after reading "Born to Run" and never looked back.
jonasvp··on This Is Why Your Website Is Slow
Sorry, didn't mean to imply it was my project. It's just one I'm using for a site with a lot of trackers (some clients do go hog-wild on those).
jonasvp··on This Is Why Your Website Is Slow
It is: https://github.com/Knewton/Gatling/wiki/Gatling-Overview
jonasvp··on Yipit Django Blog: Why You Need a Git Pre-Commit Hook
This is my pre-commit hook for Django projects: https://gist.github.com/858223

It just runs pyflakes and does some sanity checking. Best of all, it doesn't go around stashing files or otherwise messing with your working directory or repository. It just uses some git plumbing commands to copy the current index (what you're about to commit) to a temporary directory.

I can't remember where I copied it from but it works perfectly, only copying whatever I'm about to commit:

     git diff --cached --name-only --diff-filter=ACMR | xargs git checkout-index --prefix=$TMPDIR/ --
I can't say how many times this saved me from leaving a pdb.set_trace() in a view somewhere...
jonasvp··on [dead]
Funny how "intellectual property rights" got shortened to "property rights". Makes them easier to defend, I guess, since they're "just like physical property". They're not!
jonasvp··on Building Lanyrd
Just use django-compressor (https://github.com/jezdez/django_compressor). It does this as well as minifying and compressing static assets.
jonasvp··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (April 2011)
Kreuzberg, Berlin, Germany - Python (Django) developer - http://www.jonasundderwolf.de

We're a small web development agency taking on bigger projects. We use Django, FeinCMS, git, PostgreSQL, Fabric to build faster, prettier, and more usable sites for our clients. Looking to start on a product of our own later this year as well.

On-site only at this point - Berlin is a great site to be, though!
