SEEKING WORK - Contract, Remote, based in NYC area, backend engineer

I am a backend expert, having built and maintained highly available systems for several companies over the last 7 years, in addition to over 20 total years of software development experience. I learn new things extremely quickly.

You will like working with me because I:

  * hold your goals as my priorities
  * communicate verbosely yet synthesize well
  * my rates are reasonable in exchange for the value I deliver
  * I guarantee I will get the job done
Concrete examples:

* built the streaming data architecture for realtime game player information and game stats for one of the top 3 US sports leagues (can’t name drop!) using Redpanda/Kafka on Azure+Terraform, and implemented its developer portal using Gravitee to provide first class streaming API support and monetization.

* Implemented a vector DB for one of the leading AI image hallucination platforms (millions of users) to provide an image similarity service.

* replatformed dozens of jobs to AWS Lambda for a startup hedge fund, vastly improving QoS and maintenance cost. Line 1 to platform-in-prod time 3 months.

* built a ~50 node, AWS, Dockerized, Terraform-deployed distributed system to provide realtime, transformed trade data from crypto exchanges to a Kafka pipeline and data lake (fodder for an analytics platform). Met 5000msec SLA across arbitrarily many exchanges and ticker symbols. Blue-green deployment for complete CICD safety. Cloudwatch metrics proved SLA was met and provided general system oversight.

* built a framework to collapse dozens of singleton ETL programs into one config-driven, simple C# application performing the same functionality at ~80% reduction in maintenance cost year over year.

You can like whatever you want. It's not controverisal - it's personal. People won't necessarily agree on what is good and that's fine.

SEEKING WORK - Contract, Remote, based in NYC area, backend engineering

We're a team of backend experts who have built and maintained highly available systems for several companies over the last five years. From greenfield to renovation to infrastructure-as-code to site reliability, we span the entire space of backend problem solving.

We will take on your difficult problem and crush it. Your goals are our priorities.

Concrete examples:

* Backend renovation/finesse transition to scale for an exploding AI startup (the largest single server on Discord, millions of users collaboratively using AI to hallucinate images for work and play, they're in the news.)

* Realtime stats processing in a redpanda+golang+pyspark stream architecture for one of the top 3 major US sports leagues - raw data through ML models to the screen! Another project for the same client: enterprisewide internet-facing API gateway and developer portal serving stats data and legacy APIs together.

* AWS Lambda architecture replatforming core portfolio management for a startup (>$1BN AUM) hedge fund

* Realtime stream processing of crypto exchange trade data through Kafka/data lake for an analytics platform. Met 5000ms SLA, blue/green deployment, arbitrarily many symbols/exchanges. Proof of SLA in extensive Cloudwatch metrics.

* Framework to collapse dozens of singleton ETL programs into one config-driven, simple C# application performing the same functionality at ~80% reduction in maintenance cost year over year.

* Built/managed 3 subteams ~8 engineers total, operating against multiple streams of work to meet business needs, ~12 active projects at a time.

jon_north··on Who cares about plagiarism?
I view my statement and your statement as effectively the same thing.
jon_north··on Code That Doesn’t Rot
I have rules for this after about a billion years of experiencing it.

1. minimize dependencies - batteries included is best unless it will take forever to write, keeping a local copy (like Linus' idea of static linking) is next best -- a certain amount of reinventing the wheel is tolerable if you are optimizing for mimimal rot.

1a. ORMs and testing packages rot because what is popular today becomes unsupported when the next flavor of the month comes along. Ask yourself whether select Customer, ID from Invoices really needs that layer of abstraction. Ask yourself if that test is really so complex it needs a framework.

2. Mocks sounds great until you have a rush feature or incident to manage, and get busy. Use integration tests for things that would need mocking. Insist on green across the board or it doesn't ship as a cultural value.

2. use neutral (https REST) APIs to segregate logical components. The analogue of this in single-binary programs are pimpl idiom type things, depending on the language. This acts as a firebreak so you can replace code behind an API without the consumers caring.

3. version all apis and all data. Further provides firebreaks and lets you manage users by degrading QOS for older versions till they upgrade.

jon_north··on Ask HN: What is the strangest part of how humans think about risk?
Wrong question IMO. We're shaped by evolutionary pressures from situations that no longer pertain, so it's not surprising we are not optimized for a world that just sprang into existence.

My question is: Why is reality (especially including at the quantum level) so damned different and counterintuitive relative to our day to day experience? Why doesn't the universe scale up uniformly so intuition is holographically legit?

jon_north··on Reality by Consensus
right, "observer" essentially means "interact with in any way that exchanges information, in the quantum sense of the word information"

Still though, the fact that some states remain indeterminate until that interaction takes place means the universe holds its cards pretty close.

jon_north··on Ask HN: Why is GCP not as used as AWS/Azure?
Why would the one imply the other? The Spartans were the most military driven nation in history (possibly excepting the Mongols, who are another fine example) but they weren't exactly open-arms to foreign soldiers..
jon_north··on Who cares about plagiarism?
I don't want to cite, don't want to be cited, don't want to care about any of it. If that means I have to subset my code down, so be it. It's worth it to not have to care about all of that unproductive mess.
jon_north··on Who cares about plagiarism?
This. I don't publish code I think is useful. I realize that's contrary to the open source ethos, and that many people would consider it hypocritical that I would then use open source without compunction - but I view open sourcing as a choice, and closed-sourcing as an equally valid choice.

What I would never do, or never use, are restrictive/copyleft licensing terms. There don't begin to be enough hours in the day to spend even one second arguing about copyright with geeks. You get dirty, and the pigs like it, etc.

jon_north··on The Problem with C (2020)
Yes, that's true. I've actually been part of 3 published games, all in C++ -- all written with the ethos I mention above (POD classes and basically write like it's the year 2003). Bitcoin is the same way, written in C++ -- unfortunately that codebase went hogwild with new features just to do it. Codebases like zcash are absolutely nightmarish for no reason at all (given what they are doing is so trivial)

SEEKING WORK - Contract, Remote, based in NYC area, backend engineer

I am a backend expert, having built and maintained highly available systems for several companies over the last 5 years, in addition to over 20 total years of software development experience.

The primary service I offer is managed Site Reliability Engineering in high to medium ambiguity environments where the client would prefer not to micromanage day to day development. If you have systems (or need systems built) that must firmly meet, and prove they meet, their Service Level Agreements: I can help.

If the work requires a team, I will bring a team. If it is a one-person job, that is also fine. Your goals are my priorities. My rates are reasonable in exchange for the value I deliver.

Concrete examples (scratch built systems/teams, where I was sole or lead engineer):

* built and deployed an AWS Lambda architecture replatforming portfolio management for a ~3 yo startup hedge fund

* built a ~50 node, Dockerized, Terraform-deployed distributed system to provide realtime, transformed trade data from crypto exchanges to a Kafka pipeline and data lake (fodder for an analytics platform).

* built and managed a team of 8 engineers operating against multiple streams of work to meet business needs, with ~12 active projects at a time.
