joliv··on About Liberland
"Third smallest sovereign state?" Atlantium would beg to differ ;)

joliv··on Markdownify
Markdown and its kin are easier to read raw. Surrounding underscores, for example, break flow much less than <b> tags.
joliv··on Google purges bad extensions from Chrome
IIRC (using Firefox nowadays) it did tell the user what sites it was allowed on, although it did this through wildcards (e.g. "http://news.ycombinator.com/*") instead of regexes.
joliv··on U.S. Spies on Millions of Cars
Interesting—I haven't seen that term used that way before. If I encrpyt my customers' private data using a well-publicized encryption method, is it still security through obscurity, simply because they are secrets?
joliv··on U.S. Spies on Millions of Cars
Some things the public should not be able to spy on. Using the example of the DEA, we can't have cartels knowing the identities of the DEA's informers, or when and where they're planning to make a bust. We can't have our citizens' tax records getting out of the IRS. And public relations would break down if we can't keep our allies secrets, either. Our military's plans shouldn't be made known to the enemy, of course. Many secrets are kept for good reason—letting it all out indiscriminately just doesn't make sense.

Not sure how I feel about them asking for donations to their legal fund. They're a private business, not a charity.
joliv··on Hackers Who Shut Down PSN and Xbox Live Now Attacking Tor
Supposed response from "lizards@riseup.net":

> Why? I assure you, our exits are just fine. What's with people responding so negatively to us donating 360Gbit/s of exit BW?

EDIT: From @lizardmafia:

> To clarify, we are no longer attacking PSN or Xbox. We are testing our new Tor 0day.

> Only hackers, miscreants and pedophiles use Tor.

joliv··on What If Money Were Designed to Celebrate Science Instead of Presidents?
I think the man to discover conservation of charge is more than just close to a scientist :)
joliv··on Emacs Rocks
Ooh, and http://vim.sexy!
joliv··on Encrypt your e-mail with PGP and random profanity
I must be out of the loop..."dongle" is profane?
joliv··on Deis v1.0 – Production Ready
Yeah, my dokku server has been up for over a year and has only gone down completely once, due to a third-party plugin. Very satisfied so far!

EDIT: I was thinking of switching it over to Deis, but it needs a minimum of 2gb of ram, with a suggested amount of 4gb...not a great fit for my 512mb DO droplet :(

joliv··on Eleventh Grade Tech Trends
I'm in 12th grade and without a smartphone, because I feel like I spend enough time on HN and working on side projects already, and a smartphone would only pull me into the digital world even more. I personally don't feel ostracized, but I do feel a little isolated when everyone has their noses in their phones. My friends also get annoyed when I'm not timely in responding to their Facebook messages, although they've gotten used to my delay there.

joliv··on Nope.c – A web framework with a tiny footprint
Why do you think it's called "nope.c?" ;)
joliv··on A curated list of Go frameworks, libraries and software
Maybe your time would be better spent contributing to the existing list rather than making a new one? It's very long at this point and categorized very nicely.

> Fingers prune underwater not because of them absorbing water or washing away oil, but because of an evolutionary trait caused by the brain to enhance the grip of your finger underwater.

Are those mutually exclusive? Can it not be an evolutionary trait AND be caused by some process?

11 April 2014 GAL Asociación puntoGAL
That translates to the dot GAL association. Maybe they also make dots...with gals on them?

EDIT: Found another.

I think it might be better to say it's indeterminant.

Just to make sure—this is only for guitar, right?
joliv··on Chromium on Linux replacing GTK+
I use Secure Shell on my chromebook to SSH into vim. It's pretty nice.
joliv··on Common core long division.
This actually looks like a much better way to learn how division works—taking a number out of another number some number of times. While it may be less efficient than the other method, if we really cared about efficiency we would just teach division with calculators.

EDIT: Ooph, he's running for the House of Reps in my state (http://www.bongino.com/)

joliv··on Windows 8 and the Microsoft Surface
Man, finally! I love this blog, but there hadn't been an update since December. Glad to see another post!
