joks··on GPT-5: "How many times does the letter b appear in blueberry?"
on Firefox on my older Windows laptop it's like 5fps. Maybe mostly a Firefox thing?

Is scrolling down the page on this website extremely laggy for anyone else? It's bizarre
joks··on Anandtech.com now redirects to its forums
I wonder if Anubis or something could have been a viable solution but I'm sure they thought of that

If you get as much enjoyment out of problem-solving and programming as you do doing household chores, I'm not sure why you went into this career. I agree that the folks who are 100% anti-using-it-ever are overreacting, but IME replacing the overwhelming majority of the work with vibe-coding is both mind-numbing from a developer perspective and doesn't actually get you better results (or faster results, unless you're basically cowboy coding with no regard for thoroughly ensuring correctness)

I did a company hackathon recently where we were encouraged to explore vibe coding more and this was essentially my take-away too. It's kinda perfect for a hackathon but it was insanely mind-numbing to relegate the problem solving and mental model-building to the LLM and sit there writing prompts all day. If that has to become my career, I genuinely might have to change career paths, but it doesn't seem like that's likely -- using it as a tool to help here and there and sometimes provide suggestions definitely feels like way to actually use it to get better results.

AFAICT you learn significantly more in building something from the ground-up than you do when code-reviewing someone else's code. In my experience you really don't build the mental model of how the code is working unless you either build it yourself, refactor it yourself, or you have to heavily debug it to fix a bug or something.
joks··on How to make websites that will require lots of your time and energy
Sometimes it's just more fun to over-engineer things.
joks··on Qwen3-Coder: Agentic coding in the world
Please name the company you work for so everyone can avoid it. That's insane, unless you're a lead engineer whose job is primarily to oversee things

I've definitely been enjoying the sort of mini-comeback desktop toys have had in recent years as little JavaScript scripts on tech people's personal blogs (like oneko.js: https://github.com/adryd325/oneko.js/). If I was a little more cold-hearted I might find it annoying and distracting, but I just love when folks do silly stuff on personal websites to make them feel more "personal" like they did in the early-mid 2000s.
joks··on Cognition (Devin AI) to Acquire Windsurf
Cost to train and cost to operate are two very different things
joks··on Cognition (Devin AI) to Acquire Windsurf
Perceived productivity or actual productivity?
joks··on Bluesky is rolling out age verification in the UK
It is a social media platform that allows image posts. Allowing adult content is by design. Draconian "internet safety" laws like this one really should not be a reasonable expectation for what you will have to put your users through to see nude photos on the internet.

I'm also not sure where that supposed reputation is coming from, because my experience is that they've been criticized for over-moderation, if anything...

joks··on Measuring the impact of AI on experienced open-source developer productivity
I think the question still stands.
joks··on The copilot delusion
For profit organizations usually care a hell of a lot about minimizing production issues, actually. What are you talking about?
joks··on The copilot delusion
The selling point to you is that you can't fix problems, you just have to reimplement everything every time anything fails?
joks··on The copilot delusion
And then you have 0 domain experts because nobody has built the mental model of the code and what it's doing that you inherently build when you're actually doing the problem solving and code-writing yourself.
joks··on Tailwind CSS v4.0
As others have said, this is exactly what many large orgs do, but in a slightly higher-tech / more polished way with tools like Storybook, essentially creating their own CSS libraries and component libraries.

IMO a decent analogy is that Tailwind is to the above as something like Shopify is to being large enough to build your own ecommerce platform from scratch.

joks··on Why I Chose Common Lisp
In their defense I can understand going into this article expecting it to be "why I chose Common Lisp [over other programming languages]", rather than "why I chose Common Lisp [over other Lisp dialects]" -- I think most of the HN audience are not people who are often using a Lisp dialect, so their question going in would be "why not use the programming languages I'm more familiar with?"

Meanwhile, "why I chose Arch Linux" is more likely to be interpreted as "...over other types of Linux" because most HN people are already familiar with the decision of "which Linux distro will I use?" But if you gave that headline to someone who doesn't have much familiarity with Linux they'd probably expect the article to address why they chose it over Windows or Mac.

(I don't think "why I chose Common Lisp over other Lisp dialects" is an absurd premise for an article like the person you're replying to does, but I can at least kinda see where they're coming from)

joks··on [dead]
Simply incredible that this thread ends with this guy suggesting it's a wokeist conspiracy to push rewriting everything in Rust. Twitter blue checks are really something sometimes
joks··on Mustard
It's still a funny / ironic coincidence.
joks··on How I listen to music
For real. At least donate them to Goodwill or something.
joks··on How I listen to music
I think a lot of music (especially pop) has always been this way to an extent -- a bunch of songs are written with no sequencing in mind, and then the "structure" of an album is built up after the fact by sequencing those songs in a way that sounds good. Like, I don't think "Please Please Me" by The Beatles was written with an intent to tell a story though the arc of the album (it almost feels random, if anything, although maybe the most popular song was put at the end on purpose?)

In all honesty, I don't think the ratio of "a bunch of tracks thrown together" albums to "narrative arc" albums is overall all that different than it used to be.

joks··on First known photos of 'lost bird' captured by scientists
There is not a whole lot you can do by capturing a bird and observing it in captivity. My understanding is that the majority of the scientific insight ornithologists are interested in getting from a species like this comes from observing it in the wild, banding it, and/or taking DNA samples.
joks··on French artists in 1899 envisioned what life would look like in the year 2000
Something does not need to be illegal for it to be unacceptable at the time
joks··on Ask HN: Did you encounter any leap year bugs today?
I would think it's an edge case of correlation, but still correlation (100% of the time it has had this error, it was on a leap day, 0% of the time it was not)
joks··on Show HN: Nekoweb – a retro static web hosting
They're not instant-messaging platforms. Though it's true that Discord often gets misused as a permanent knowledge-base (where a forum would be much better)
joks··on Why is Prettier rock solid?
Yeah the eslint stylistic plugin basically deprecated Prettier for all my purposes (+ my team just moved to it too.) I wish it could autofix line length warnings like Prettier but I understand the reasons why it doesn't and it's easy to manually fix those anyway.
joks··on Detecting digital image forgeries using sensor pattern noise

joks··on Sora: Creating video from text
I think dismantling creative fields like this is completely different from automating manual labor in a way that makes humanity more prosperous. I don't see what the upside is of this -- it's not making creative work better, it's devaluing creative work and disenfranchising creatives.
