jokab··on Ask HN: Do kids make you happier?
12 yo daughter. Seems like yesterday she was my baby girl. Now shes an emotional roller coaster.

There is a good analogy I heard from her schoolmaster about handling kids her age.

The swimming pool analogy.

People in the swimming pool gets tired and comes to the side rails to catch their breath. When they're ready, they kick the walls to go back to the deeper end of the pool.

The walls are us parents and when they kick us is when our kids go back to their friends to hang out and such.

When they go to rest on the sides is my kid telling me about her day and all. Its just brief but I couldn't be any happier.

The kicking part ranges from "your annoying stop talking to me" to completely ignoring and switching back to discord mode to talk to friends.

It hurts quite a bit when they do that we even end up fighting. But after hearing this analogy I now know how to feel and react.

> I always wonder where is the VB6/Windows Forms for web apps.

they tried. it's called asp.net webforms.

it sucked hard. bécause they forced event driven paradigm in a stateless environment (http) resulting to hacks (hello viewstate).

but hey it was my gateway drug into web development as a winforms guy. im the sucker and i shouldnt be complaining. but 15 years later im back to aspnet webforms because of legacy apps the client doesn't want to upgrade yet.

jokab··on Do you struggle with anxiety from work?
It would take a lot of lifestyle adjustment if OP would ever lose her job.
jokab··on Do you struggle with anxiety from work?
"the subtle art of not giving a fuck"

there are only a few fucks we can give in this world, make them count.

for me its family, health, and then bills in that order.

if i feel im being stressed out at work or side projects, i remind myself its just work i can replace it if they fire me.

jokab··on What I learned from trying to be too productive
i began taking side projects on the cheap so i can get paid to do other stuff aside from my day job. stuff that i like. its so cheap that i can tell my clients that i am taking my sweet time so no pressure at all on my end. if they disagree then i can fire them without regrets. ill be making stuff anyway with or without getting paid because that's what us makers do.

but somehow i dont feel productive even when doing side projects. i fear that what people at my day job think is what matters at the back of my mind. sometimes the things i do at day job are those things i dont want to do.

i cant quit because its a high paying job so i guess i need to change mindset instead.

jokab··on Ask HN: Best non-business books to read on vacation
i second these suggestions.
jokab··on Ask HN: How to take notes?
this sounds like zettelkasten method.
jokab··on Ask HN: What is the best enterprise software you use every day?
wow ill give it a try. maybe.
jokab··on Ask HN: What is the best enterprise software you use every day?
1) joplin. a great alternative to onenote.its in markdown and open source!

2) ulauncher (for linux), executor (for windows). oh how i love just typing "az 12345" and it shows my azure devops bug in chrome.

3) obs studio. when i want to force myself to focus i record myself doing the tasks and talking my way through it. give it a try

im away from my computer so this is just some of the things i remember

jokab··on Ask HN: What is the best enterprise software you use every day?
sorry i got carried away
jokab··on Ask HN: What is the best enterprise software you use every day?
1) changing keybindings to suit my needs. ctrl o, ctrl o to open folder in explorer. ctrl alt t to open terminal, etc

2) snippets designer plugin. enjoy snippet creation

3) macros. crashes most of the time tho. sometimes im too lazy to pop a terminal and type my git alias so here we are.

4) disable some features to increase loading time. (lots of articles around)

there are others but these are my top 4

jokab··on Ask HN: What is the best enterprise software you use every day?
1) nimbletext. when clients send me excel sheets with tons of data to import i would generate insert statements in the sheets themselves. this is a painful experience. Then i found out about nimbletext. its pure joy to use.

2) jailer. I'm a visual kind of guy. so this makes database analysis very easy.

3) onenote. if only it had Linux app i would use it for personal use.

4) visual studio 2019. customized to the bone to be uber productive

5) Autohotkey. got a ms 4000 ergonomic keyboard and binding all keys a journey in itself

I'll stop right here but i have tons of other tools i really enjoy using.

jokab··on Ask HN: I want to quit coding professionally but keep it as hobby. What now?
You like coding but you're bad at it.

It sounds like you either have impostor's syndrome or you lack practice/experience.

you are burnt out?

As others suggested you can try to look for another job, hopefully this would fix it.

I would suggest to look at it in a different light tho. Try this.

Download OBS studio. Record yourself doing your regular day to day coding tasks. Pretend you are some big shot coding sensation with thousands of viewers.

This will help in many ways than one but the most important thing is it will help keep/make it more interesting for you as it did for me.

jokab··on How I nipped burnout in the bud with diet, exercise, sleep
You overcame burnout by working less.

Thats what came to me when I saw the title.

When i read the article, it seems you overcame depression with exercise and diet.

So the real problem was depression?

jokab··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
Fair point. But sometimes the pretending part fades away when I get to the "flow". When that happens, I usually forget OBS was even running way after the task was done. If it were Twitch stream, I imagine somebody from the chat window would remind me to put my d* away
jokab··on In Praise of AutoHotKey
The AHK scripts you mention was probably the work of somebody who automated himself out of a job. Now upper managment thinks they would save $$$ by maintaining the AHK scripts instead of the actual underlying support system.
jokab··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
on Windows I use Win+1 (windows terminal or conemu), Win+2 VS 2019, Win+3 VSCode, etc
jokab··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
I also considered this in the past but sometimes, I slip into procrastination mode unintentionally and might check my bank account (or pornhub) once in a while. So thinking my video is uploaded to somebody else's computer gives me the shivers.
jokab··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
the idea is to make a video that you can watch yourself. 8 hours of video isn't very enticing to watch. i suggest organizing the recordings by feature or task.

the only other thing I considered setting up in OBS is to make it work with Spotify to get a great bg music.

jokab··on Ask HN: What are your favorite developer-efficiency tips?
Obs studio. I record myself while coding anything. I pretend to be a bigshot coding streaming sensation (even if its just for me). Its fun as well as very helpful in so many ways.

1. It helps me stay focus on the task at hand. One recording for each task 2. It lets me practice how to articulate stuffs. Its like blogging but ephemeral (because i wont upload this) 3. It helps me get motivated. Cant let my "thousands" of viewers down 4. It lets me review my blunders so i know how to watch out for them in the future 5. Its fun. I can let off some steam because i can curse all i want, my audience is 18+ and fine with some "sentence enhancers". I am Filipino but i record in English so i get that extra bonus practice.
