jokab··on Do things, tell people (2012)
I use pomodoro for this. Writing software doesnt always require you typing at the keyboard. Most of the time I sketch the solution/design using pencil and paper
jokab··on Poll: Is the leetcode grind necessary to land a high paying remote job?
the standard answer would be, yes but you must have a respectable reputation, as the parent commenter has I assume.

it just bugs me to read these comments that makes it sound so easy to earn that much in upwork or similar platforms without context or disclaimers

jokab··on Phony diagnoses hide high rates of drugging at nursing homes
how many you got?
jokab··on Do not do in code what can be done in infrastructure (2017)
Any disclaimers? This opinion coming from a dev or an administrator?
jokab··on Schools opened, suicide attempts in girls skyrocketed
If its that simple, why arent you riding a dick towards space?
jokab··on Bflat: C# as you know it but with Go-like tooling
> VS has no competition

True. Rider comes close, but it's no VS

jokab··on Micro-Habits of Effective Managers
As i was scrolling hn i imagined the title to be "25 effective habits of micro-managers". Might have finished reading that one instead
jokab··on uxn: a portable 8-bit virtual computer

jokab··on Making Your Own Tools
Funny you mentioned hammer. I only have a hammer hanging on the wall. Im gonna use that to slice my onions. Is what my mind drifted to...
jokab··on The value of downvoting, or, how Hacker News gets it wrong (2009)
Upvoted :)
jokab··on Ask HN: Solo developer, what's your recipe to start working?
I would identify what tasks i want to get done. Than split them into pomodoro chunks.

Then I would, and this is the most interesting part, record my pomodoro session using OBS studio.

I love to pretend that i have thousands of viewers that are rooting for me to get the the task done in as little pomodoro chunks that I can.

I set my pomodoro intervals to 50mins focus/ 15 min break, and I would change it depending on current tasks at hand.

jokab··on Ask HN: Can build CRUD apps, what now?
> ...spend some time to build a framework...

Yes, no. Do this and then leave the company. Then I or some other poor sucker gets to maintain your framework that makes you 2x faster but everybody else 2x slower. Yay fun.

Build a framework only if its reeeeeaaaaallly necessary. Whis is most likely never. If you feel the urge to write one, by all means build one for your own side projects, but dont shove it down everybody else's throat

jokab··on Ask HN: Does anyone actually use the Pomodoro technique?
Pornhub-pomodoro for shorter tasks
jokab··on Free for Developers
What's the difference? Whenever i get free beers i get to pay the next morning and id rather clean a puppy's mess than ache all over

jokab··on 26 Years of Delphi
Thanks for sharing this story
jokab··on Streetfighter II is 30 years old
This brings me back. I can still remember the smell of my old consoles even way back in the 90s
jokab··on What every programmer should know about memory, Part 1 (2007)
As a LOB programmer who mainly puts forms over data
jokab··on Ask HN: Do You Journal a Lot?
I tried to use different kinds of app, joplin, onenote, simplenote, etc, even physical notebooks, nothing sticks.

But this idea of a single text file is interesting, I'll give it a try. Thanks for sharing

jokab··on Shitlist Driven Development (2016)
Also make sure you have enough RAM in your septic tank
jokab··on Shitlist Driven Development (2016)
Just watched Tenet yesterday and this comment reminded me of the pincer technique
jokab··on 30 years later, QBasic is still the best
This is exactly what i feel. I discovered qbasic shortly after I played with super mario on NES and I thought that qbasic could be my gateway to create games.

Funny I ended up developing LOB apps instead of games because eventually my interests led to databases and dynamic apps.

I guess if tools like unity or real engine existed back then I might have been a games developer. Maybe. Now i still play around with unity but not as much as i want to because of several side projects.

jokab··on Ask HN: Are you depressed?
That was beautiful.
jokab··on Over 80% of Covid-19 patients in a hospital study have Vitamin D deficiency
Given enough data we can correlate pretty much anything to anything
jokab··on Cognitive deficits in people who have recovered from Covid-19
Sorry to hear this. I cured mine with a CPAP machine. I had to be tested with apnea twice bc the first one came out ok but i wasnt convinced.

In any case, i hope you feel better

jokab··on Advice to my young self: forget side projects and focus on your job
I work at a company as a consultant. Devs here have been doing the same thing for 10 years. Webforms. Guess what? None of their hobbies include coding. Stuff like git is like fire to these cavemen.
jokab··on Guard Clauses, a Better Way to Do Conditionals
>The readability of those structures is highly dependent on the language and how it expects serial conditionals to be most efficiently written.

My knowledge is limited only to c# thus c style languages so i am curious how you would write the contrived conditional statements in the article to be more readable in any other language that would make it more readable than guard clauses

jokab··on Ask HN: I'm a terrible developer, what now?
Early in my career I faked it many times just to get those jobs. I dont have a degree so i did what I had to to survive. I didn't fake any documents or something like that, I just lied in interviews and lucky for me they didn't background check deep enough.

Now I don't have to lie about my education. I would like to think its because of my skills I developed over 16 years but it could also be the times changing.

Like many here I also enjoy hobby development projects. I also suffer from imposter syndrome probably because to some commenters' point, I am an actual imposter.

jokab··on My Productivity Stack: What Apps I Use for My Second Brain
I love posts like this!

The life dashboard is a good idea. I dont think notion will do it for me but maybe something will. That tool is still out there.

The Evernote email thing is a good feature. Maybe OneNote has the same thing?

Im an Android user and will try to use Google Assistant in the same manner as you do.
