Fyi, free article but requires login.
johntfella··on On Being Sane in Insane Places (1973)
its a controversial paper as there have been later publications targeting the author. my main reason to post it is to save it to my submissions as I'm going to need to access it soon for reference in paper I'm writing for a course I'm doing. Nonetheless here is a copy outside of scihub if anyone is interested. In linking the parent source I like to always reference it from the original source.

johntfella··on Populorum Progressio (1967)
don't read into my post here too much. 90% of my posts are to save links here for later private use. hn simply provides the additional benefit of reading people's takes on said links.

there are some gems in there that can encourage one to think of what they are doing, building for etc. what specific goals is one after and so forth. but nonetheless its not going to be a life changing document, just something to use as a passing citation in a newsletter that I run for a co-op I co-own.

johntfella··on The Ethical Skeptic’s Razor – The Antiwisdom of Crowds
i'm always surprised at what posts get traction and what don't. for me, I primarily use hn to save links so sometimes I'll post the most random of articles and they get traction while posts that I think would really fit well here are completely ignored.

re-submitting, for some reason the original link was "https://www.c-span.org//www.c-span.org/video/?514140-1/when-..." & I can't edit the link on the original submission.
johntfella··on When Politicians Panicked
weird. if you search for "when politicians panicked" on cspan it shows up but I think this is still the same web address. not sure what thats about. shrug, would have been good content on here eg reading the replies to the book talk.

figured out the problem, i did re-submit but guess that's considered a dupe. idk. still learning this site.

johntfella··on Demonopolizing the Internet with Interoperability
I don't have much to add here. I will share that one thing I cherish about my doctor is his refusal to go digital record. Everything is paper. He has long been an advocate for repealing medical record retention laws. Keeping it to paper at least adds a speed bump some what.

The hope would be that the system splinters. Those that want more data oriented system can have it, those that don't can remain in the past.

Other than that, Herbert L Fred's "The Tyranny of Technology" and that of his term 'technological tenesmus' comes to mind; https://doi.org/10.1080/21548331.1997.11443437

johntfella··on New York Hospitals Face Possible Mass Firings as Workers Spurn Vaccines
what is not being taken into account is the compounding effect of the generalised shortage and how over worked everyone is. burn out is already there and there are alternative employment options for the ones that don't want the vaccine. it doesn't have to be a huge number that resigns/gets fired to push things over the edge for those who are vaccinated and staying on the job.
johntfella··on Infection-enhancing antibodies recognize both the original and Delta
A while back I linked a paper titled "The Technology Effect: How Perceptions of Technology Drive Excessive Optimism" (https://doi.org/10.1007/s10869-015-9399-4). This is a central trend in the posts I do. It is to consider whether "Excessive optimism that technology will result in success can have negative consequences." So I post within that lineage and to attract comments that may yield unique perspectives. Thus I see it as relevant in the discussion of what is created by technology in possible consequences. For this it relates to the vaccines. Other posts relate to how amish manage to use technology et al.

The secondary reason for posting is that most of what I post is a save for later access for my own use. I have other flag posts that I access in the same manner. So whatever floats your boat.

johntfella··on Researchers track how microbiome bacteria adapt to humans via transmission
correct, unpasteurized.

this is a pretty good start for raw milk (pdf). http://f2cfnd.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/newRawMilkProdu.... another good book is 'Keeping a family cow' http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/1021099243

There is a lot on youtube, instructional wise. Some of the challenges were more just the learning process. For raw milk itself, the mainstream society has a very different view on it. The reason why I went with it is a bit of a long story. My gastro wanted to switch my meds to a drug that would put me at higher risk of complications to even just the basic of colds. If that failed I was going to need to have my colon removed. Figured I'd take the gamble with raw milk. At first purchased it from a few farmers. After a few weeks on it my condition began to improve, a few months later I was in remission. A few of the farmers went under so I decided to get my own cows cause I have the land. I don't sell. I use everything I produce. I personally prefer a mix of breeds over just holsteins (edit; https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2020/1/28/men-who-stare-at-...). I try to do everything so its biodynamic and add back to the land. Still a learning process.

johntfella··on Researchers track how microbiome bacteria adapt to humans via transmission
This is neat. I wonder about animal to human transmission? I'm more or less a recluse so my human interaction is maybe one... once every three weeks. I drink raw milk from cows I own. This seems to help with my gut problems. So that's the lineage of thinking I'm coming from. Not making any claims, just thinking my human to human interaction is pretty limited unlike my animal interactions.
johntfella··on CDC document cites delta variant’s ability to spread among the vaccinated
"Neither primed CD4+ nor CD8+ T cells appeared critical for immunoglobulin class switching, the development of immunological memory, or protection from a second infection." this seems reasonable, it never made sense to me that one can not get reinfected. for depletion, it would seem then a counter to the second dose argument, yet again I revert back to my statement above that to me I'm positioned in that I can wait for the fog to clear a bit. A lot of this seems very early days in the Iraq war when the media and admin were in the same boat for the purpose of the invasion etc.
johntfella··on CDC document cites delta variant’s ability to spread among the vaccinated
That is an excellent question, I hope someone studies this in the future. The best I can offer is this study on flu vaccines that seem to show that annual repeated uptake undermine CD4 cell response;"We find a striking disparity in their responses, with previously vaccinated subjects exhibiting significantly blunted CD4 T-cell responses and diminished antibody responses." (1) I know they are different viruses etc, but it is something to consider in light of the previous mentioned study and also all what seems to be going on with CDC.

johntfella··on CDC document cites delta variant’s ability to spread among the vaccinated
I found the explanation of natural infection rather interesting in this piece however unfortunately I have not been able to find the original source:

“Natural infection exposes us to all the proteins of the virus – not just one like the vaccine – leading to a wider response by the immune system. Even someone who has a low level of antibodies will be protected by T-lymphocytes, a cellular protection – and given this response directed at more viral proteins, new variants will have more difficulty entering the organism” (1).

The quoted immunologist is on twitter and is relatively conventional (2).

I have attempted to research this specific line some but because there is so much skewing with searches right now I haven't had too much luck. Suppose partially why I share it in comment form is I never felt it was of quality for a post submission eg.. it's not the original source. I do think if that quote is accurate then the issue of testing for t cells et al to determine whether someone has been infected prior to vaccination might be a good way to go especially if the concluding remarks by Camara et al hold true in that "the second BNT162b2 vaccine dose results in a reduction of cellular immunity in COVID-19 recovered individuals" (3).

Both my brother and I have uc. My brother got the vaccination and developed a pretty bad flare up. My uc condition has always been a bit more severe than his. I know I have had the virus and even volunteered to help out months later when sister and her husband got sick and nothing developed on my end. Considering Akinosoglou et al hypothesis, "that, even though, COVID-19 vaccination does not provoke de novo immune mediated adverse events, it is possible that, the immunologic response triggers pre- existing underlying dysregulated pathways" (4), I have been wary of taking the vaccine with the additional knowledge that I had the natural infection. Luckily in that I am self employed and work from home, most of my shopping is done online even prior to the pandemic so I feel at least I'm well positioned to wait it out a bit longer until research down the road with less upfront bias emerges.

johntfella··on Software is eating the car
I've been exploring building my own car from scrap. This wsj sort of motivated me (1). The ideal would be no electronics at all. An issue I have with new cars are monitors, I hate them they are distracting. My eyes are pretty sensitive to computer screens etc. Maybe, I'd settle for just a radio. "Maybe" because you then get looking at a cd player then all the sudden you want the further desire to control what you listen to and before you know it you are talking about mp3/digital and more computerization/softwaring of the car.

The first question is... what do I want? The second is the more complicated issue of getting it done. However it has always been a dream of mine since being a kid and watching the Home Improvement sitcom in the 90s.

johntfella··on PA is Full of Bologna... Lebanon Bologna (2010)
as another noted, there should be no problem accessing it. I just double checked on tor and vpn. as for why it made it to the front page, all I can say is more often than not I'm surprised at what I post that gets attention over what doesn't. Last night I also posted an article about autism and parental age, was thinking that would get more buzz than this.

either or, more often than not I use hn as just a place to save obscure links with the additional benefit of reading insights from others when the posts get noticed.

johntfella··on How to sequence your genome at home
I've considered getting my stool tested for microbiome. Another curiosity is Virscan (1) with perhaps the intent on getting the virome tested as well. A lot of my interest comes from the perspective that I have ulcerative colitis. I have read everything about the disease since diagnosis. I don't want to go into everything, but it got to the point where the gastro wanted to prescribe humira and if that failed to move onto pouch surgery. Always being prone to a gamble, I tried drinking raw bovine milk and making enemas from it. To my surprise things began to clear up within a few weeks. This was 6 years ago. I'm symptom free and my most recent colonoscopy was clear. I have attempted to talk to doctors at the local teaching hospital that have a microbiome research initiative but got turned away. The interest was to let them study me, however I get it in that they have other priorities. Either or.. I have the op article printed out as perhaps genome will aide in some home research. No idea. One of the things I suspect is that I've had uc for longer than when it became an issue. Have read it can be present in childhood without much symptoms. So the curiosity is just trying to figure out if it is genetics, environment.. what not.

johntfella··on On Smoking
I was lucky when I tried my first cigarette in that it just didn't do anything for me. Later I would try cigars on drunk evenings with friends. I enjoyed the smell just never really understood what it was suppose to do. Always wondered about that, maybe just like how covid hits some people really hard perhaps smoking is the same.
