> You don’t?

No, why do yours? :D

If you're using cluster autoscaling with very small (or perfectly sized) nodes, I could see it being more of an issue on a busy cluster.

But even then, I wouldn't set up a database to auto-scale. A new node could get created, but it doesn't mean the db pods will be moved to it. They'd ideally stay in the same location. And on a really busy cluster, I'd prefer a separate node pool for stateful apps.

Using something like Stackgres makes it relatively painless to run postgres in k8s too, it handles setting up replicas and can do automatic failover.

I like ceph in some cases, but ceph hasn't worked very well IME with multi-region clusters or just higher-than-lan-speed latency.

I never tried the actual multi-site support, but for my own homelab use-case - I don't have enough servers in each region to make their own ceph cluster.

johntash··on Dokku: My favorite personal serverless platform
Ohhh, I stand corrected. I don't think that was an option the last time I looked at Dokku. I see the schedulers section in the docs now, thanks for pointing it out!

Does the k3s scheduler work with existing non-k3s k8s clusters as well?

Digital Ocean is even on the expensive side these days. There are a lot of vps providers that offer decent pricing and include bundled bandwidth. Some of the hosts may not be good for business-use, but should be fine for personal stuff.

This is the part that gets me every time. It sounds pretty neat, but.. if it only works on one server - what's the point?

What about things like scaling, or even just what if your one server runs out of resources to fit more apps on?

What do you use for distributed storage (if anything)? Storage has always been my biggest headache when trying to make geographically-redundant clusters of any kind.

It's only a problem if your nodes go up/down often, or you have other things causing pods to be pre-empted/etc.

If you have a static number of nodes and don't have to worry too much about things autoscaling, I don't see why it couldn't be really stable?

Talos is great. I'd recommend using Omni (from the same people) to manage Talos. I was surprised how easy it was to add new machines with full disk encryption managed by remote keys.
johntash··on Aerc: A well-crafted TUI for email
Assuming by org you mean an employer - this is also a benefit. For legal reasons, you may not want to have a copy of any of those emails anymore, or at least your employer may not want you to.

I try to forward important e-mails to myself if I think I'll need them outside of work (insurance details, etc).

johntash··on Wafris – an Open Source Web Application Firewall that lives in your stack
Is there support for using ingress-nginx in kubernetes?

Also is there a list of supported servers/software? I clicked on a few links from the home page and they took me to a page asking for an e-mail to be notified when they're available in the future.

Does the free plan even allow blocking anything? All the Pricing page says is "IP Investigation" for the free/oss plan, leading me to assume most features are behind a paywall?

johntash··on Show HN: Tegon: Open-source alternative to Jira, Linear
Do you think this would be useful for personal users as a todo/task management app? I have no chance of convincing work away from Jira, but I'm always on the lookout for a better personal task manager.
johntash··on Microfeatures I love in blogs and personal websites
I'm okay with comments being there, but I prefer the ones that hide them by default and have a link to load and expand the comment section.
johntash··on Sleep apnea: Mouthguards less invasive, just as effective as CPAP
Do you have a link to what you use? I don't think I've heard of them before, but sounds interesting.
johntash··on Sleep apnea: Mouthguards less invasive, just as effective as CPAP
IIRC my cpap machine was close to $1k, but the quote for a MAD was around $3600.

In-home sleep studies are cheap now, but in-office ones are even more expensive than the MAD sometimes.

johntash··on Show HN: Godspeed is a fast, 100% keyboard oriented todo app for Mac
I still use RTM fwiw. I try new todo/task managers quite often, but always end up back at remember the milk. My only complaint about it is that it's not opensource so I can't self-host it.

I'm currently trying out SilverBullet.md as a markdown note tool and task management. The UX isn't close to rtm, but it's pretty customizable so I'm hoping I can make it close.

A few people/companies I've worked with avoid using the last few days of the month for "monthly" things.

For example, "every month on the 15th", "every month on the 1st", etc. It makes it easier to figure out compared to "every 30 days" or "every month on the 30th, unless there are less than 30 days in the month"

I'd benefit from OCR too. Not just PDFs, but OCR on images could be super useful to.

For a personal use case, I'm thinking things like receipts. For work, I'm thinking OCR on architecture diagrams/etc.

johntash··on AdGuard Home: Network-wide ad- and tracker-blocking DNS server
> Standing reminder that any device smart enough to run a real web browser shouldn't use one of these and doesn't need one.

Why not? Or why not use both?

> The primary use case for these is for blocking ads on devices that don't allow running a real browser and yet still shows ads, such as "smart home" devices, TVs, etc.

What about non-browser apps on mobile devices or even desktops? Lots of apps have invasive ads and are unlikely to offer an extension api to block them with.

johntash··on Show HN: Wren – simple yet extensible task management with CLI, Telegram, HTTP
Looks pretty interesting! I've been trying to use taskwarrior and taskwarrior-tui recently, but might give this a try too.

One complaint I have so far is putting the cron-style syntax in the filename. Having *s in a filename feels weird and probably makes it harder to work with other cli tools

johntash··on Why do some people feel tired all the time?
I have! Or I think it was sleepyhead? It helped me a little bit, but I think I had a hard time figuring it out because I wasn't really wearing it for very long before I'd take the mask off, so it didn't feel like there was enough data each night.

I did also post to one of the apnea boards with data from it and they helped figure out better pressure settings for me which did help some.

johntash··on Why do some people feel tired all the time?
achileas mentioned the oral appliance. It's apparently somewhat common, but I didn't know about it for the longest time either.

For surgery, it really depends on your body and what the cause of the apneas are. In my case, it is _probably_ due to tonsils + a long(?) palette. An ENT told me I could have surgery to remove the tonsils and also shave down the palette, but I didn't go through with it because it sounded like a terrible recovery time and didn't have any guarantee it would actually fix the issue.

If you haven't already, it might be worth talking to an ENT (Ear Nose Throat) specialist that also deals with sleep apnea. The oral appliance definitely sounds like the less painful option though.

johntash··on Why do some people feel tired all the time?
Did you have any issues with the device when you first got it? I've been using a cpap machine for a while, but it took me literally years before I could sleep through an entire night with it on. I've been thinking of either having surgery or going the oral appliance route this year.
johntash··on Why do some people feel tired all the time?
I think my dentist offered it for $3600 without insurance? I haven't done it yet, but I want to. They did need proof of a sleep study, but I think that is more of an insurance thing.

This sounds like a pretty cool idea. I'm assuming it isn't open source, but do you plan on allowing data sync without any sort of cloud offering? E.g. either sync to a local directory, webdav/etc, or allow self-hosting a sync service.

Even with e2ee, I don't really want to store my documents somewhere I don't control. And if you're targeting businesses, some businesses won't even look at the product if they can't control the data completely.

johntash··on Show HN: Heynote – A dedicated scratchpad for developers
I was expecting to not like this, but it's actually pretty cool. I love how simple it is and that it's not trying to replace everything.

I used to use the scratch buffer in Emacs all the time, and it is something I missed from emacs. I go between using Obsidian and Trillium for notes, but I'm going to try using Heynote for a scratchpad / quick notes type of thing and copy things from it if it's worth saving.

Maybe a feature request would be the ability to export a block? I wouldn't want it to be complicated so maybe just something like "Export block to command" and then the command could be a customizable curl command or some other command that copies stdin to another app.

"⌥" is "option" on a mac keyboard, which should usually be the alt key on linux/windows
johntash··on Sam Altman, Sugarcoating the Apocalypse
Don't worry, I skimmed it and it mostly looks like clickbait anyway with no real substance worth noting.
johntash··on Scripts for Streamlining Your Homelab with Proxmox VE
ceph is latency sensitive, but that should only matter for the servers running ceph and not (as much) the clients using it.

I thought quorum feature of proxmox was also latency sensitive, but this is the only thing I found:

https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Cluster_Manager#pvecm_cluster_n...

Maybe this doesn't matter if not using HA? I'll read more about it and maybe test it out

johntash··on Trivy: The all-in-one open source security scanner
Is Trivy helpful for non-docker and non-kubernetes? For example, can it be used on a regular baremetal server? All of the examples seem to be aimed at either images, ci/cd, or source code
